Jonnas Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 @Fierce_LiNk: I believe you overreacted. Yes, the point of the thread is to discuss the possibility of a spin-off, and what to do with a franchise, but wondering if that is a good thing to do in the first place is still staying on-topic. That said, it's entirely possible that Flinky reacted like that because this exact same issue is already being discussed in another thread (the Miyamoto one). Speaking of Smash, can somebody tell the Wii-Fit Trainer to fuck off out of it please? That right there is bullshit nobody asked for. Smash Bros is about cherished characters. Wii Fit is a soulless, money-making fad. It has no fan-base, it's not a part of Nintendo's fantasy universe. What's happened there is, Miyamoto has pitched the idea to his spineless colleagues and they've blithely indulged him despite knowing the idea is steeped in hot piss. 1. A lot of good stuff started as "bullshit nobody asked for", including that 3D Metroid game that self-professed fans complained about until they actually played it. Think about how much sense that argument of yours makes. 2. Wii Fit has fans. Not a dedicated fanbase, but people like it, myself included. You want a game without fans, try Ice Climber. 3. Even if it didn't have fans, the Trainer has been generally well received because it is an original-looking fighter in this fighting game franchise. 4. There is no such thing as a "Nintendo fantasy universe". What are you on about? 5. Miyamoto has nothing to do with the development of Smash Bros. I find it ironic that you defend not milking out tired franchises, then proceed to criticize Smash Bros. when it decides to pay respect to a new franchise.
Mr-Paul Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 I completely agree with Sheikah & Oxigen. Their comments are both valid and on topic, even if they've taken the topic in a direction you didn't want to see, Flink. I was hoping you were being ironic by titling this 'branching out', because this is the same franchise rape we've seen from Nintendo for the past umpteen years. It would be refreshing to see Nintendo come up with a new IP knowing full-well that it couldn't be stripped of its assets in order to expand their cheery, self-congratulating empire. What would a Zelda racer really have to say about the series? What value does it add? In my eyes, Link should only be put in a car if Nintendo made a mash-up racer (ala Smash Bros roster). Speaking of Smash, can somebody tell the Wii-Fit Trainer to fuck off out of it please? That right there is bullshit nobody asked for. Smash Bros is about cherished characters. What's happened there is, Miyamoto has pitched the idea to his spineless colleagues and they've blithely indulged him despite knowing the idea is steeped in hot piss. Come on. Posts like this are just going to end up getting this topic locked. It's antagonistic, and your opinion on Wii Fit trainer in Smash Bros. has nothing to do with the possibility of a Zelda fighter!
Rummy Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 You guys do realise this is a discussion that actually spun out of the Smash thread as a self imposed-thrip by Flink? It just got moved over here from Nintendo it seems. I'm also fairly sure it's just a light-hearted discussion, with no intentions of this ever being an actual thing. Just light hearted speculation and random ideas about something that isn't too serious, can we just have those in here? There's lots of other places to discuss everything else that's coming up.
Retro_Link Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 I was enjoying imagining a Zelda racer/fighter... It reminded me of the times on Cube-Europe when you'd just create a random thread like that and imagine the possibilities... where realistic sales and franchise fatigue talk needn't come into it. Just fans designing a game! I believe that's what @Fierce_LiNk was getting at. Have fun on a Nintendo forum FFS!
Cube Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 I think the Zelda franchise would be perfect for the Paper series.
Retro_Link Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 I think the Zelda franchise would be perfect for the Paper series.Yep!... A paper Nintendo RPG would be cool, with all characters.
Guy Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 I definitely wouldn't be opposed to these games. Definitely wondering if Mario Kart will ever be rebranded Nintendo Kart with more characters appearing.
dwarf Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 @Fierce_LiNk1. By fantasy universe I mean the franchises Nintendo have - Mario, Zelda, Metroid etc - they all have their own established worlds and characters: The Mushroom Kingdom, Hyrule, the various Metroid planets and so on and so forth. These are actual fleshed out fictional worlds with stories and personalities. Wii Fit has none of this. It's a barebones simulation that doesn't really exist in any place or time. Miis are used to interact with the Trainer, which are merely projections of real people. A crossover between a lifestyle training programme and a charming fantasy universe is just...wrong. I'm also baffled that you think the significance of this minor character inclusion is in any way comparable to the reimagining of a game franchise and its transition from 2D to 3D. 2 & 3) To reiterate, Ice Climbers is a game with fantasy environments and characters. 'Fans' of Wii Fit aren't fans because the Trainer is a great laugh and the environments are exciting. They're fans of Wii Fit because it provides a fun distraction whilst keeping them in shape. 5) Miyamoto created Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, StarFox, F-Zero and Pikmin. He was chiefly responsible for the early development of Wii Fit and Nintendo's recent casual-game ethos. He introduced the Trainer's Smash Bros trailer at E3 and Masahiro Sakurai, the creator of Smash, documented the way Miyamoto oversaw Brawl's development/ emphasised his presence when he released details about the game for the first time. And you're telling me he had nothing to do with this decision. I suppose it's neither here nor there really. It doesn't matter who had the idea. It's hard to knock Miyamoto because he makes great games. He is, however, rooted in tradition. He's a bit backwards. Whatever way you cut it, the inclusion of the Trainer smacks of desperation. You can't add new beloved characters to the next Smash Bros if you haven't made any for years. Why not scrape the barrel for something that might just be passable, if only because it's a bit of a joke?
Cube Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 The Wii Fit Trainer would have made sense if they didn't also say that they were limited on how many characters could get a position in the game.

Hogge Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 I've thought of a Zelda fighter before. There's a lot of characters and races that would be interresting in a fight. A twin-scimitar wielding Gerudo or a spear carrying Hyrule castle town guard. Or a Megaton Hammer swinging Goron versus Ganondorf with that massive sword from the Spaceworld 2000 demo. Regarding racing games: that's not what's lacking. Nintendo need what I previously mentioned: a Gran Turismo-killer. Or at least, now that EA have chosen to do nothing for the Wii U, a Need for Speed-killer. Zelda racing would be Donkey Kong Racing, only with a less suitable franchise or Sonic R (Mario Kart, but awful). In essence: no thanks.
Ville Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 What Nintendo needs is another Diddy Kong Racing. Yes, I said it.
