Rummy Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 The gaming market isn't what it used to be; as said tablets/phones and cheap easy even free games have come into play, games on social media like facebook have come into play - previously handhelds or even console gaming might have filled the bored times of these folks but sadly not as much now. Steam-like cheap and easyness is the way forward!
Daft Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 Bar Tearaway, QuizUp on iOS has been the most fun I've had on a handheld in at least a year. And it was free.
Clownferret Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 smartphones are crushing handheld consoles. In some cases it's justified, if you compare Candy Crush to Zoo Keeper, they are very similar games, except one does not require a £100 console and £30 game to play. Sony are also looking in financial difficulties, when will Sony and Nintendo get over themselves, team up on a mega console and handheld smartphone that contains Sony's grunt, Nintendo's software catalogue, 3rd party support and take over the world and be happy with a 50% market share.

liger05 Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 Tomb Raider gets to #1 Square-Enix’s ‘Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition’ debuts at No1 as a next-gen PS4/XB One re-launch of last years ‘Tomb Raider’ re-boot (debuted in week 10, 2013 as what turned out to be the fourth biggest week 1 seller on the All Formats in 2013). EA’s ‘FIFA 14’ (-4%) drops to No2 and is less than 500 sales behind. Given the scarcity of releases at this time of year, ‘FIFA 14’ will be hoping to re-take No1 next week which would give the title entrance to the small elite club of products that have aquired 10 weeks at No1 on the All Formats Chart (currently 10 titles). The rest of the Top 10 remains pretty much unchanged, with Activision’s ‘Call of Duty: Ghosts’ down 1 place at No3 (+19%), EA’s ‘Battlefield 4’ down 1 place at No4 (-5%) and Warner’s ‘LEGO Marvel Super Heroes’ also down 1 place to No5 (+11%). 1 TOMB RAIDER: DEFINITIVE EDITION PS4 SQUARE ENIX SQUARE ENIX EUROPE 1 2 FIFA 14 PS4 EA SPORTS ELECTRONIC ARTS 2 3 MINECRAFT: XBOX 360 EDITION XB360 MICROSOFT MICROSOFT - 4 TOMB RAIDER: DEFINITIVE EDITION XB ONE SQUARE ENIX SQUARE ENIX EUROPE 7 5 CALL OF DUTY: GHOSTS XB360 ACTIVISION ACTIVISION BLIZZARD 5 6 CALL OF DUTY: GHOSTS PS4 ACTIVISION ACTIVISION BLIZZARD 3 7 KILLZONE: SHADOW FALL PS4 SONY COMPUTER ENT. Sheikah Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 Impressive for a re-release on a new console really.
Daft Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 With 69% of those copies sold on PS4 too, I'm sure Sony will love reading that figure.
Ashley Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 Who doesn't love the number 69? That one's for you @ReZourceman!
liger05 Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 Impressive for a re-release on a new console really. It sold 27k combined. I thought it would be higher to be honest.
Sheikah Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 It's a game that came out not that long ago though (but still being charged full price) to be fair, and being bought by people who likely already had the opportunity to buy the PS3/whatever version.

Sheikah Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 Sweet, they've done Disgaea 4 for Vita? Will so get that if they ever bother translating/releasing it elsewhere. Even USA would do.
Andyliini Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 Not sure if this is the correct place to discuss about gaming companies annual profits and losses, but I thought this would be the best place, as many companies will be releasing their annual numbers soon. Sony's prediction. Their annual numbers aren't looking too good. Even though good sales of PS4 made them profit for Q3 a few days ago, the annual loss is projected to be about $1.1 billion. This change is drastic, as they were projecting $300 million profit last quarter. Main reason for this was the TV-business, which hasn't been doing well in the past decade. CEO Kaz Hirai denied the rumours of selling the TV business. PC business, however, will be axed and sold to Industrial Partners. Aside from that, about 5000 jobs will be axed to save money, and in order to return to profits in 2015.
Hero-of-Time Posted February 7, 2014 Author Posted February 7, 2014 Their gaming division is doing fine. It's the rest that needs restructuring, which Kaz is doing nicely.
Daft Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 Green shoots everywhere. Problems have been identified and the company is being streamlined, it's all pretty encouraging. And gaming is one of their core divisions. To think it started as a grudge.
Phube Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 From what I read the other day Sony has now dropped VAIO, and will concentrate on phones and tablets...
Andyliini Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 From what I read the other day Sony has now dropped VAIO, and will concentrate on phones and tablets... Yes, that's right. There's also a rumour flying around that their TV business is also goin go be sold, altough Hirai is currently denying it. Personally I woudn't ever even consider a Bravia, they are quite expensive compared to many other label, and there's something about their image quality I don't like. Too jaggy, maybe. But revising from $300 million profit to $1.1 billion loss is definitely not good, and tells of huge problems within the already troubled and indebted company. They have put the usual wheels into action, but I really wonder if it's enough. I personally think they will have to at least get rid of TV business before they can recover. They have been troubling ever since mid-2000's and even now there seems to be no end.
Sheikah Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 Well I just got a Bravia as they are right up there in terms of spec. The KDL42W653 is ridiculously good for low input lag which is what it's all about for gaming. Far better than equivalent Samsung/Panasonic (~£500 range). Soon to be released Playstation now is also going to work on Bravias so there's another good incentive.
Wii Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 Sony TVs are a rip-off compared to other brands and don't match the spec of Samsung and LG. Good riddance I say. They've not been up there since old school CRT Triniton TVs. They need to cut the fat.
Sheikah Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 (edited) Sony TVs are a rip-off compared to other brands and don't match the spec of Samsung and LG. Good riddance I say. They've not been up there since old school CRT Triniton TVs. They need to cut the fat. Again, I'm not sure where this is coming from, as I did a lot of research before buying a TV. The Sony W6/W8 range came out on top as some of the best (non ridiculously priced) overall but particularly for gaming because of the extremely low input lag. As far as I can remember the Bravia range have always been sitting at the top of the semi-affordable - slightly expensive TV range. It wouldn't surprise me if they're losing sales to Samsung purely because Samsung TVs tend to produce cheaper and more affordable sets. In terms of reviews, the TV I got scored near perfect marks from pretty much everywhere, and generally looks really nice compared to the cheaper brands. Although saying that, the TV I got is cheaper than quite a lot of Samsung models of similar spec. My TV cost about £469 in the end due to a John Lewis price match, but comparing this to a same-price Samsung (UE40F6320) the Sony TV is better. Sony seem to be pricing more affordably these days. Clownferret Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 Sony/Samsung/LG tv's have always been comparable but Samsung and LG have always been cheaper, probably due to being Korean. It's worrying for Sony that they are failing in what has always been their key markets. They are now relying on their games division to keep them afloat and they lost 50% of that market in the previous gen!
Andyliini Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 They are now relying on their games division to keep them afloat and they lost 50% of that market in the previous gen! I was about to write about Film and Music divisions also being profitable, but it seems lately that even their Film division went negative. Taken into account that TV's haven't been selling very well for the last decade, and camera business is being destroyed by Canon and Nikon. I really feel the corporation is slowly withering from inside.

liger05 Posted February 12, 2014 Posted February 12, 2014 (edited) In Japan the 3DS gets a small boost, while everything else drops. The 3DS sales are worrying. Another game does big numbers and but the HW sales didnt really move. Seems like its really hit saturation point. Puyopuyo Tetris pretty much bombed on everything other than the 3DS. The Wii U version didnt even chart in the top 20. I wonder whether DK will even sell 100k first week and is the Wii U even on track to reach the revised forecast? Vita had three new releases so thought its sales would of been better than they are this week. Edited February 12, 2014 by liger05
