Yes it shot out of the gate and I think over here it still has the highest launch sales for the first weekend.

The PSP's problems were software sales. Piracy really killed those sales, far more than it did on the DS.

Really? DS was the single easiest thing to pirate ever and most people I knew had a flashcard.

I thought PSPs problems were lack of killer software and generally not distinguishing itself enough from consoles (such as lack of a unique feature like touch).

Really? DS was the single easiest thing to pirate ever and most people I knew had a flashcard.

I thought PSPs problems were lack of killer software and generally not distinguishing itself enough from consoles (such as lack of a unique feature like touch).

PSP piracy was far worse than DS for two reasons. 1, it didn't require any additional flash card purchase (it was softmoddable and the stronger anti-piracy measures came into play far too late).

2, It was "hacked" on day 1, thanks to Sony's unbelievably stupid mistake of allowing unsigned code to run off the memory stick as default on day 1. DS on the other hand took about 1.5 odd years before the first flash cards (which were fairly unreliable and obscure) came about. So piracy was widespread from the very start and quickly gave the perception of it being "The Piracy Machine".

Of course its software never really resonated with the market like the DS' did, primarily because most of them were console games shoved onto a handheld device (that's not to say that it didn't end up with a great library - cause it did! There are a surprisingly large number of great games available for that thing!); but piracy was a big problem, much moreso than the DS.

That being said, it did extraordinarily well in terms of hardware sales in the end. Sure it sold less than half of what the DS did, but 76 million is nothing to scoff at! That's very close to matching the GBA! (Granted the GBA was succeeded by the DS only a short 3 years after it launched - with a 5 year lifespan and to this day remains the fastest selling handheld of all time before replacement; even ahead of the DS, in comparison to the PSP's 8 year lifespan, but that's still a great result nonetheless!)

It was software sales where the PSP floundered though (save for a few notable exceptions like the Monster Hunter series, GTA LCS/VCS, MGSPW in Japan etc).

That's not really the case as you needed to screw around with custom software and update it often (since I found that a lot of games wouldn't run on the older custom software).

Regardless of whether you needed anything else or not, with DS it was far more simple. With PSP you needed firmware version 1.5 to even install custom firmware or else you needed to downgrade it, which was a bit of a faff and on some models was problematic. With the later models you would need a Pandora battery (battery modified using a fat PSP that you probably wouldn't have). So you would have to probably purchase something far more obscure to get those models cracked.

Contrast this to a cheap R4DS which would cost less than £10 with a MicroSD and was available from god knows how many places. Not only was this simple drag and drop of files, the wet dream of Casual Joes, you could fit far more DS titles on the card than you could PSP games on a pro duo. Flashcards really were the ultimate idiot proof pirate tool. And it didn't take them that long to surface.

For those reasons I don't really buy that there were more PSP pirates than on DS. It's all about simplicity and for many people PSP pirating was not simple. Obviously there were tons of PSP pirates, but I still think there were more people with DS flashcards. PSP largely suffered from a software drought and generally not having a unique draw like touch, or being much different product from home consoles. I think that had a bigger effect on sales than piracy. People just preferred the games on DS (me included).

Everyone seemed to have those flashcards on the DS and plenty soccer mums even knew what to do. However even though piracy was a major issue on the DS the software sales were still pretty damn amazing.

The early days of PSP piracy were very easy going. By the time that they really started to erect significant barriers like the Slim & Lite model, the damage was already done; and those common DS flash cards like R4 didn't really come into play until around halfway through the DS' lifecycle, so the effect was much less pronounced.

That being said, you're right in saying that ultimately the DS just had a much more compelling game lineup. Even towards the end, when DS piracy was in full force, you still had plenty of top selling titles like Art Academy and Pokemon B&W. People don't just want console style games on the go, they want games that are taylored to the handheld gaming experience.

I really don't think as many people with PSPs went down the piracy route as you think. In the early days memory stick sizes were small and expensive so a lot of people were still buying their games as UMDs. Also the first model was a fat brick and a lot of people either hopped on board with the later models or upgraded. The act of installing custom software was itself not straight forward enough for your casual or average gamer to be on board. I remember at the time that it was somewhat complex to perform (running an exploit using GTA Liberty city Stories) and I knew it wasn't going to be something that everyone would be doing. Especially with the publicised risk of bricking your PSP by doing it.

Anyway, the Wii had a 'no hardware required' softmod method and from the point it did, the Wii still shifted far more games than probably anything else at the time. The PSPs failings were not mostly down to piracy - it's probably safe to assume that really good games that people want will attract a lot of pirates, but also a far greater number of people who buy it legit. If not a lot of people want the games then the console's failings can't really be attributed in any major way to piracy.

Massively interested to see the first numbers of GTA soon - potentially one of the biggest selling games this generation? See it's already out of stock on Amazon.

So apparently MH4 sold 1.875m copies and the 3DS 298k units in 2 days.

Someone on Gaf wrote up a comparison for the 3DS sales.

3DS Peak Holiday 2011 - 510,629

3DS Peak Holiday 2012 - 433,788

3DS Launch - 371,326

Monster Hunter 4 Release - >298,000

3DS LL Launch - 235,974

3DS Price Cut - 214,821

Next up, Pokemon! :D

Puppeteer charted at #40. Kind of sad. I wonder how it did digitally since it was the same price on PSN.

It was always going to happen and it's such a shame as it really is a fantastic game. :(

I thought with the big Hardware bump some other 3DS games would get bumps but not to be (should see bumps going forward though). Great opening 2 days for MH4 though and real good 3DS Hardware numbers.

Vita shocking and Wii U below PSP. Not good!!

Hoooly shit, that's a pretty good boost in hardware numbers too! The 3DS has had legs in Japan for quite a while now, time for Nintendo to try and continue the trend over here in the West. Animal Crossing proved yet again there's potential, Pokemon will do amazing as per usual, but Nintendo need to ready their next punch.

It'll be interesting to see how PS Vita TV does. A microconsole might be perfect for Japan.

Same here man. That thing looks pretty attractive to me, I'm even considering getting a friend to buy it and ship it over to me, the price is just phenomenal.

It'll come over here some point. I call early next year.

Truly a sad indictment of the times that a remake of MH Tri can best a remake of the brilliant Persona 4 by something like 8 times the sales. What the fuck is wrong with people. :(

Japan be crazies.

I'd call that great taste myself ;)

Well, most critics would disagree. :p

I got so bored of MH3U. It has to be the most grind-fest non MMORPG I've ever played... repeatedly slaying the same monsters to farm materials gets old quickly. Also the story may as well be non existent. I preferred Phantasy Star Online, which at least had a cool setting and didn't make you farm enemies to the same extent to get by.

- biggest debut for the franchise yet

I'm not surprised it's the biggest debut for the series. It's a main series title and Japan has been absolutely dying for a new one ever since the Portable series died, which would have easily been the most profitable had the not milked 3 for all it was worth.
