Sheikah Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 Nintendo have been competing in both the handheld and home console departments for years. You make it sound like they've suddenly decided to make a home console and are suddenly terrible at it. It has never been as bad for them and they've clearly lost touch with what people and developers want. They really can't compete in the home console market - this is something that has been ongoing since the latter part of the Wii's life and has got worse. They've got bugger all support and are extremely slow at releasing anything. I think Nintendo would definitely benefit from becoming a handheld manufacturer and software developer for other systems. And we all would too. Not being able to make their own hardware is an extremely small price to pay. Especially since their hardware pretty much sucks.
Hero-of-Time Posted August 13, 2013 Author Posted August 13, 2013 According to the MCF, Japan’s market for mobile gaming reached roughly US$5.1 billion in 2012. The size of the market for gaming on feature phones in Japan in 2012 reached around US$2.4 billion: roughly US$2 billion for social games, and another US$410 million for mobile games (titles that are not distributed through social gaming networks like GREE or Mobage). On the smartphone side, the gaming segment reached US$2.7 billion for all game-related content (here, the MCF doesn’t make a special distinction). -Japanese mobile game industry (feature phone + smartphone) was $5.1 billion for 2012. -Japanese consoles/handhelds software + hardware was $4.6 billion for 2012. I guess this is why game developers are jumping ship to mobile games.
Wii Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 UK Games Retail Has Suffered The Worst Month On Record GFK Chart Track is reporting that only one million boxed games were sold last month in the United Kingdom, 40.4 per cent lower than June and 33.3 per cent below July 2012. This puts July down as the worst month in UK video game retailer history. However, Nintendo says that it is pleased with the sales of the Nintendo 3DS, which gained market share last month. Here were the best-selling games in the United Kingdom during July. 1. The Last of Us (Sony) 2. Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition (Microsoft) 3. Animal Crossing: New Leaf (Nintendo) 4. FIFA 13 (EA) 5. Far Cry 3 (Ubisoft) 6. Mario & Luigi: Dream Team Bros (Nintendo) 7. Tomb Raider (Square Enix) 8. Assassin’s Creed III (Ubisoft) 9. Call of Duty: Black Ops II (Activision) 10. Wii Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 No releases and people waiting/ready for Next gen. I know when Sony and Microsoft are releasing their next generation consoles but when is Nintendo releasing theirs?
Hero-of-Time Posted August 13, 2013 Author Posted August 13, 2013 No releases and people waiting/ready for Next gen. Also, heatwaves. Sorry, Serebii. I couldn't resist.
liger05 Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 I know when Sony and Microsoft are releasing their next generation consoles but when is Nintendo releasing theirs? As I have said before the market was/is ripe for a next generation of consoles. Console generations have never lasted this long before and generation fatigue has well and truly kicked in. Nintendo just dropped the ball in not releasing that console.

Debug Mode Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 Was about to call out the 3DS for having a kind of small number, but this is just the calm before the colossal, brick shitting storm due over the next few months. It's going to be interesting to see how things go in the run up to Monster Hunter.
Wii Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 (edited) Yakuza HD is a bomba!! To say that is an understatement. Yakuza HD Wii U Didn’t Even Enter The Top 50 During First Week In Japan We found out yesterday that the Wii U exclusive port of Yakuza 1 & 2 HD didn’t make the Media Create top twenty. Now it appears as though the game didn’t even make it into the top fifty in Japan. The 50th best-selling game moved 1,878 units, according to Dengeki. That would clearly mean that sales for Yakuza 1 & 2 HD would be lower than that for its first week. http://mynintendonews.com/2013/08/15/yakuza-hd-wii-u-didnt-even-enter-the-top-50-during-first-week-in-japan/ The PS3 version by comparison did close to 60k its first week back in late November. Didn't expect it to do great but this is abysmal. Just another example of why games like this just don't sell to nintendo console owners. Expect the third party situation in Japan to remain even worse than the West.
Serebii Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 1 year old port of a 7 year old game fails on flailing console. I AM STUNNED
Wii Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 It's not a 1 year old port yet and being 6 years old at the time didn't do its sales any harm on the PS3. Do you mean "flailing console"? I'd say failing console and sales like that will only further convince developers to let the Wii U drown. Like it's not bad enough as it already is. Next up for execution Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Same excuse?
lostmario Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 I Next up for execution Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Same excuse? You can pick it up on 360/PS3 for £5 or £40 on Wii U, which one would you buy? Its not that these type of games don't sell on Nintendo consoles, its just the poor choice of games they are choosing to release for it. Year old ports to test if there is a market for these games on Wii U, not at £40 there isn't. I'd imagine if GTA5 was released on the Wii U at the same time as the other versions it would do good numbers.

Wii Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 (edited) NPD: Nintendo 3DS Is The Best-Selling Video Game Platform For Third Straight Month Nintendo 3DS continued to build momentum in 2013 and finished as the best-selling video game system in the U.S. for the third consecutive month. A strong second month for Animal Crossing: New Leaf helped sales of Nintendo 3DS hardware and software increase by 14 and 45 percent, respectively, over the same time frame last year. Highlights for the month include: Animal Crossing: New Leaf sold more than 150,000 combined physical and digital units in its second month on the market, bringing its lifetime total to more than 660,000 combined units. The lifetime total for Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon for Nintendo 3DS surpassed 820,000 combined physical and digital units. New Super Mario Bros. U for Wii U surpassed 830,000 lifetime sales of combined physical and digital units. EarthBound launched July 18 for the Virtual Console service on the Nintendo eShop for Wii U and is off to a great start. Only two eShop titles, New Super Luigi U and Pikmin 3, generated more consumer spend in the same time period since launch. Nintendo 3DS and Wii U fans will have a lot to play this summer and through the rest of 2013. Starting with the recently released Pikmin 3 (Wii U, Aug. 4) and Mario & Luigi: Dream Team (Nintendo 3DS, Aug. 11) and continuing with The Wonderful 101 (Wii U, Sept. 15), Pokémon X and Pokémon Y (Nintendo 3DS, Oct. 12), The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD (Wii U, October), Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (Wii U, November), The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (Nintendo 3DS, November) and Super Mario 3D World (Wii U, December). http://mynintendonews.com/2013/08/15/npd-nintendo-3ds-is-the-best-selling-video-game-platform-for-third-straight-month/ Edited August 15, 2013 by Wii

khilafah Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 Wii U sales for NPD July sales so so bad!! Console is in the gutter. Its not gonna hit Gamecube numbers when all said and done.
liger05 Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 1 year old port of a 7 year old game fails on flailing console. I AM STUNNED It sold less that 2k. We are not talking about it cracking the top 10 here but this was a tester from Sega to see what the wii u audience was like and it failed the test. It's a port but if there are not even 2k wii u owners interested in yakusa then I would say that's a problem and there is no incentive to consider bringing other games to the platform. Now onto the NPD results. Wii U at 29k for the month. Tracking well below the Gamecube. Vita @ 16k. Both platforms are as good as dead in the US.
Serebii Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 (edited) Wii U sales for NPD July sales so so bad!! Console is in the gutter. Its not gonna hit Gamecube numbers when all said and done. Except now games are starting to come out, so it'll turn around. It has a constant 1-2 of games now, both first and third party. I'd be very, very surprised if it stays at this level. It's illogical to assume that it's constantly going to flounder when you look at a month with zero releases. A month that is always considered the worst month of the year for game sales. Dcubed Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 (edited) Forget the Wii U shenanigans, SMT 4 is what we should be discussing here! SMT 4 did between 65k-70k and would've appeared in the top 10 if we were going by individual SKUs!? That's an amazing result! (And that's not even counting digital, where its sales are probably not insignificant considering the game's audience!) For reference, look at the past LTD results for the other major SMT games... LTD numbers as of January 2009 [PS2] Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne (2004.10.12) - 60,000 [PS2] Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga (2005.03.29) - 51,000 [PS2] Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 2 (2005.10.11) - 43,000 [PS2] Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner (2006.10.10) - 43,000 [PS2] Persona 3 (2007.08.14) - 80,000 [PS2] Persona 3: FES (2008.04.22) - 154,000 [PS2] Persona 4 (2008.12.09) - 123,000 [DS] Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (2010.03.12)- 28,000 It has already beaten all of those games except for Persona 3 (which it may have already done so if we count digital - and if not, it will no doubt do so very shortly) & Persona 4 (which is probably doable - Persona 3 FES might be a challenge though). Now onto the NPD results. Wii U at 29k for the month. Tracking well below the Gamecube. Vita @ 16k. Both platforms are as good as dead in the US. Frankly, I'm surprised that the Wii U didn't sell less than 29k (It's only a small drop from the 34k number from last month), considering that it has still yet to receive any 1st party software outside of Game & Wario. Next month should paint a more telling picture. Pikmin 3 has resulted in a (relative to the Wii U's current sales) large hardware bump in both Japan (where hardware sales doubled week-on-week when it first came out and hardware sales seem to have bottomed out at double where it was before - up to a stable 10k as opposed to a stable 5k) and Europe (where it seems to have had a similar effect that is sadly largely undocumented) Granted it's still crap, don't get me wrong here, but it'll be interesting to see if the US echoes Japan and (seemingly) Europe. Serebii Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 Nintendo has a comeback plan. It has only just started to be instated in America. Pikmin 3 saw increases, not massive but increases, in sales for the Wii U in Japan and Europe. The month NPD we just received was of a month with ZERO releases. Yes, it is dire, but it's not indicative of Nintendo's plan failing. Every month we have a 1-2 of first party releases July: Pikmin 3 (Japan and Europe) August: Wonderful 101 (Japan and Europe), Pikmin 3 (North America) September: Wonderful 101 (North America), Wind Waker HD (Japan) October: Wind Waker HD (North America, Europe), Wii Fit U (Japan) November: Wii Party U (Everywhere), Donkey Kong Country (North America, Europe) December: Wii Fit U (North America, Europe), Super Mario 3D World (Everywhere) Not to mention a plethora of third party releases that ARE NOT a 1+ year late port. If it's still flailing in these levels in November, then yes, Nintendo has a problem. But come on, let their plan come to fruition Here in the UK, Nintendo is now heavily marketing the Wii U. Not a day goes by where I don't see a Wii U advert on TV, for Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101...hell, even Disney Infinity has been moneyhatted into being advertised for Wii U above all others. Nintendo shifted their marketing budget out of the first half of the year into this half so they can fully push it.
