Hero-of-Time Posted August 20, 2014 Author Posted August 20, 2014 Four times two sales is just eight :p I'd take whatever increase in sales the Wii U can get at this point. Actually, this goes for any of the consoles in Japan. It's crazy just how much that market has shrunk over the past few years.
Hero-of-Time Posted August 20, 2014 Author Posted August 20, 2014 Zelda + Dynasty Warriors + Japan = A change of currency for the country? Megaton right there.
Clownferret Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 The last generation started almost a decade ago, before tablets and smartphones became popular. Your comparison is invalid. it may have started 10 years ago but the two formats have been running side by side for at least the last 4 years and I don't think console sales dropped off a cliff as soon as tablets and smartphones were launched. Take that argument aside, the PS4 selling less than the PS3 which must be an indication that things are bad. This generation as a whole is quite unique in that never has a new generation launched with so many of the games being made for the previous generation of consoles. Obviously, media is one reason as they all use discs now, and I guess it shows that the advancements in technology are getting smaller each gen that so many games are playable on the previous consoles.
Rummy Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 (edited) nobody surprised? You think people expected the wii u to sell worse than the wii u? It probably isn't hard to quadruple your sales if you're originally selling a minimal amount of units. Edited August 20, 2014 by Rummy
Sheikah Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 This generation as a whole is quite unique in that never has a new generation launched with so many of the games being made for the previous generation of consoles. Obviously, media is one reason as they all use discs now, and I guess it shows that the advancements in technology are getting smaller each gen that so many games are playable on the previous consoles. The games being re-released aren't playable on the previous consoles. They're being remastered such that they take advantage of the extra grunt of the new consoles. Those remasters wouldn't run on the previous consoles. It's no different to how, say, Jak and Daxter was remastered on PS3 when it was originally a PS2 game. The real reason there's a lot more remasters is because they're easy cash and can grab customers who never bought the games last gen.

Hero-of-Time Posted August 20, 2014 Author Posted August 20, 2014 Can we blame the weather? Was it sunny again? That's gonna follow around for years.
Serebii Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 Was it sunny again? That's gonna follow around for years. If I embrace it, it'll go away faster :p And, to be fair, the Pokémon Centers WERE empty then, and they're rarely empty :p
Rummy Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 According to Kotaku Sony Doesn't Understand Just Who The Heck Is Buying All Those PS4s. Complete opposite to Nintendo, a conservative and cautious approach, underestimating the success and rising to meet it in some ways, difficult to go in the opposite direction. I'm half tempted to start a thread in Other asking people here why they have it off the back of this.

Hero-of-Time Posted August 21, 2014 Author Posted August 21, 2014 Yay. Arrogant Sony is back ^_^ I don't see it as arrogance at all. I think he's saying they are being cautious because the sales are very front loaded and it's worrying that they may burn out quickly. Many people on various forums ( some on here ) have actually asked the same question: Just why are people buying the PS4? I read the whole interview on Eurogamer yesterday. It's a very good read.
Sheikah Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Yay. Arrogant Sony is back ^_^ Complete opposite of arrogance. They are admitting they don't know why it sells. Arrogance would be pretending it's to be expected or that it's because they're the best. Arrogance would be releasing another console called the Wii_ with barely any discussion with third parties because you think your own output alone is so hot sauce that that's all your customers need. Arrogance is thinking you're usually always right.
Goron_3 Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Yay. Arrogant Sony is back ^_^ Your definition of arrogant is slightly...off.

Definitely a whiff of arrogance here, but I'm not laying it at Sony's door at all I hadn't gotten round to reading the whole interview, but I'll definitely make some time for it if you think it's good! Kaepora_Gaebora Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Absolute bunkum from Sony! It's either faux modesty which is arrogance by any other word, or it's an utterly stupid statement from them. Did Iwata/Nintendo ever make this claim while the Wii was transcending the genre and entered into pop culture? I'll happily be stood corrected, but I can't imagine so. If Iwata had, or even said now "I don't know why Wii U isn't selling" likewise Phil Spencer, people on here and over the internet would be politely suggesting they were in the wrong job and time to leave. 10 million is an amazing number of consoles to shift in this time frame, but there are still PS3/360 owners who haven't made the jump yet...if the guy from Playstation is saying he doesn't know why people are buying the thing, why would consumers want to buy it from now on? 10/10 for honesty, 0/10 for business acumen.
Rummy Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 I did read the interview, I do agree it's a nice read. As for 0/10 business acumen I'd highly disagree. They made a product, and they expected it to sell, the problem is they didn't expect it to sell quite this well. They aren't the consumers and they now need to try and understand why it's exceeded expectations and adjust accordingly. Spot on business sense, if you ask me. There's a very big business difference between 'I don't know why this product is selling so well!' and 'I don't know why this product isn't selling!' - the latter is a failure, the former, whilst a bit silly, is just excessive success. You're in the business of making and trying to sell things, but it IS a bit silly not to quite understand why sales are exceeding expectations. As HoT mentioned though - even people here have said/asked the same. Why IS the PS4 selling so well? They've also equally provided many reasons for why the Wii U probably isn't. It's tempting to compare the two as polar opposites but it isn't a simple dichotomy.

Are you kidding? People will want to buy it because it's the superior console and has great Indie support/Plus benefits. Who gives a shit what this guy says. Honestly though, can't tell if serious? A quick look at the comments section on Eurogamer and you can see people love his candid honesty for saying this. So all in all, it pretty much worked. If he is being honest it's not a lack of business acumen, it's acknowledging what other people are too bigheaded to admit. And it's obvious not everyone can see the exact recipes for success, or else all the other consoles would be bloody storming it right now. Edited August 21, 2014 by Sheikah

A quick look at the comments section on Eurogamer and you can see people love his candid honesty for saying this. So all in all, it pretty much worked. Haha, you can't tell if I'm serious, yet you're presenting a serious (I presume) argument based on you having a quick look in the comments section of a website addressing this story and then claiming a success? You've basically admitted there your own statement is utter tosh! Anyway, the only proof in my being right would be is sales slowed down but that probably won't happen, so I imagine it's no harm done to the PS4. But I still stand by the statement that if Iwata or Spencer had said that, even from a position of success they'd get roasted. Also being honest, or even trying to be funny, isn't always best when business is concerned, as the case of Gerald Ratner showed... http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerald_Ratner
Daft Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Well saying he doesn't know why the PS4 is selling has generated a crap load of articles telling him why the PS4 is selling. You can't buy that kind of press. (Well...you can...)
Rummy Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 The difference is Yoshida hasn't said the product's crap, in fact he's almost done the complete opposite by essentially saying 'It's better than I even expected!' - taking your Ratner example that's going to do nothing but push sales forward! Ratner essentially cheapened the product, Yoshida has somewhat elevated the product! (totes had to look up an opposite for cheapened) I hadn't even considered the knock on as Daft mentioned though, that's even better for them now.
