Hero-of-Time Posted August 13, 2014 Author Posted August 13, 2014 Just funny the talk only started once the ps4 bombed though, never mentioned before. In fact there was anticipation to how it would do... Fine it quite painful to be honest. Also, Japan is so important to the mediums history that we should keep aware. I agree. People ( myself included ) thought the Wii U was just not selling because of what it was, just like it wasn't in the other territories. It wasn't until the PS4 arrived that we seen clearly that the console market is pretty much done there at the moment. We couldn't have seen this event until the PS4 arrived due to how badly the Wii U was selling elsewhere. Although Sony maybe had an insight in to this happening, which is possibly why they focused on the West first, which turns out was a very smart move, especially considering how low supplies were at launch. Yes, Japan plays an important part of out hobbies history but there is no denying that a power shift happened last generation and the west became the dominate force in terms of developers. So many Japanese developers lost the plot with HD development and now most of them are chasing the mobile rainbow.
Wii Posted August 15, 2014 Posted August 15, 2014 July 2014 NPD: Nintendo’s response – Mario Kart 8 crosses 1 million, 3DS software hits 40 million Mario Kart 8 has now sold more than 1 million total units in the United States alone, becoming the second Wii U game to cross that milestone, along with New Super Mario Bros. U (1.69 million). Mario Kart 8 continues to drive momentum for the Wii U platform. Through the first seven months of 2014, total sales of Wii U hardware and software have increased by nearly 60 percent and more than 135 percent, respectively, over the same period in 2013. Notable Wii U games on the way this year include: Hyrule Warriors (Sept. 26), Bayonetta 2 (October), Super Smash Bros. for Wii U (Holiday) and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (Holiday). These games will be joined by amiibo, Nintendo’s foray into the toys-to-life category, which will launch this holiday season. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will be the first game to support amiibo. Other games that will support amiibo include Mario Kart 8, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Mario Party 10 and Yoshi’s Woolly World, with more to come. The continued strength of the Nintendo 3DS platform can be attributed to the breadth and quality of its overall lineup of software. To date, more than 40 million Nintendo 3DS software units have been sold in the United States alone. This includes 41 titles with a Metacritic score of 80 or higher, seven of which have a score of 90 or higher; and nine games that have sold at least 1 million units in the U.S. alone: Mario Kart 7: 3.48 million Super Mario 3D Land: 3.09 million New Super Mario Bros. 2: 2.28 million Pokémon X: 2.10 million Pokémon Y: 2.01 million The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D: 1.39 million Animal Crossing: New Leaf: 1.36 million Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon: 1.33 million The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds: 1.09 million Source: NPD

Wii Posted August 15, 2014 Posted August 15, 2014 How does that track against previous MK games? Mario Kart franchise sales: Year Platform Title Sales (in Millions) 1992 SNES Super Mario Kart 8.76 1997 Nintendo 64 Mario Kart 64 9.87 2001 Game Boy Advanced Mario Kart: Super Circuit 5.91 2003 GameCube Mario Kart: Double Dash! 6.88 2005 DS Mario Kart DS 23.56 2008 Wii Mario Kart Wii 35.53 2011 3DS Mario Kart 7 9.62 2014 Wii U Mario Kart 8 2.82 It's the weakest of the series sales wise but there's a long way to go and MK has legs. It's entirely possible at the end of this console cycle it'll be the least sold which would be wrong. DLC could help spike sales some more. Battle Mode needs to be fixed.

There was a lot talked about how well it was going to do there because we all knew it was going to have an extremely rough time having no titles to cater to the Japanese audience for a good while.

Retro_Link Posted August 16, 2014 Posted August 16, 2014 I thought it was a bit of an odd comment too. Everyone knew the PS4 wasn't going to do that well in Japan, that's why it was third priority when it came to launching the console. No one is surprised by the sales, and Sony are probably shipping quite small numbers there.

I didnt expect it to fly off the shelves due to the lack of games but selling 5k a week so soon. No way!!
Daft Posted August 16, 2014 Posted August 16, 2014 What does 5k or even 10k units a month matter when in America consoles sell up to 200k units a month?
Goron_3 Posted August 16, 2014 Posted August 16, 2014 Japan is not a console market, and tbh it hasn't been for some time. A box that you put in front of your TV just isn't part of their culture. It's about gaming on the go and everyone knows it.

Daft Posted August 16, 2014 Posted August 16, 2014 People don't want consoles there. They barely want handhelds.
Ashley Posted August 16, 2014 Posted August 16, 2014 Post showing how consoles tracked behind phones in Japan in 2012: http://n-europe.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1597933&postcount=1177 It's by no means scientific but total sales from random dates in the past: January 2013: http://n-europe.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1526281&postcount=195 Total 145490 July 2013: http://n-europe.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1590807&postcount=1076 Total 105898 August 2014: http://n-europe.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1701778&postcount=3118 Total 85479 As I said it's not scientific and someone can do better, but it does at least suggest console (home and portable) sales are declining in Japan and have been since before the PS4 (and probably Wii U, but can't be bothered to look more).
Retro_Link Posted August 16, 2014 Posted August 16, 2014 regardless of the western sales sony are going to have to do something to fix those sales. Why? when it's proving to be one of the best selling consoles of all time without Japan. Yes it would be good if the sales of all video game consoles in Japan would pick up, but it's just not happening atm. Anyway, I believe Sony have said they'll be working on some games more Japan focused. And also that Project Morpheus should appeal.

Ashley Posted August 16, 2014 Posted August 16, 2014 I don't think they're actively trying to make it perform badly in Japan, just not rushing into trying to fix it as they're doing well elsewhere. A poorly planned fix could cause problems and their success elsewhere means they don't need to rush.

Hero-of-Time Posted August 20, 2014 Author Posted August 20, 2014 @Wii when do the Japanese numbers hit? I'm interested to see what kind of a bump Hyrule Warriors gave the Wii U.
Kaepora_Gaebora Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 Microsoft have got to be questioning bringing the One to Japan surely. On the one hand they need to release in more territories, but if the PS4 is selling that badly I dread to think what the One will do in Japan, no matter how many exclusives or Japan centric games they have!
Wii Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 @Wii when do the Japanese numbers hit? I'm interested to see what kind of a bump Hyrule Warriors gave the Wii U. Media Create will have sales figures tomorrow but it's selling well. Hyrule Warriors Pushed Japanese Wii U Software Sales to “Four Times” Amount of Last Year, Hardware Selling Well According to a new report from Tsutaya, Hyrule Warriors has been selling quite well in Japan, affecting both overall software and hardware sales. Tsutaya is the largest retail chain in Japan, and is used by analysts to predict software and hardware sales. "The Obon Season [a three day Japanese festival made to honor ancestral spirits] saw strong sales over last year. Especially for the released Wii U software title Hyrule Warriors, with hardware sales going very well. The Wii U software division recorded sales nearly four times that of the previous year". It further states that while sales aren’t usually as strong during the Obon season, sales from Hyrule Warriors still managed to be high. The Tsutaya chart from August 11th to the 17th even lists the title at number three. http://www.dualshockers.com/2014/08/19/hyrule-warriors-pushed-japanese-wii-u-software-sales-to-four-times-amount-of-last-year-hardware-selling-well/
Hero-of-Time Posted August 20, 2014 Author Posted August 20, 2014 Good to hear it's doing well. I expected as much, I mean the DW games are popular over there and adding Zelda into the mix surely would increase the interest in this type of game.
