General Gaming Sales/Charts Discussion

MK8 would of done well regardless of the free game offer. Japan didn't get it and the game done very well there.

I didn't know the Japanese didn't get the free game. That was scabby and makes its sales all the more impressive.

But as has been said regarding all the other reasons, attach rate is always going to be high for a great game on a console with far less variation and where the vast majority of customers are already committed to that developer's content in buying the system (since that's mostly what the console is all about). I'm guessing the attach rate statistic is global so a lot of that will include free game contributions.

This is generally why I don't like percentage reporting, since it's all so easy to misconstrue. While attach rate can tell you what's hot, it also says a lot about your audience and the diversity of your content. If Wii Fit was still uber popular and people wanted the next one, you'd have a lot of people probably buying that who were less inclined to buy other stuff for their Wii U, thus attach rates for other games would be lower.

PS4 doing bad is an understament and the worst thing is there is nothing on the horizon to stop the rot. 5k in a week is nothing short of abysmal nobody would of predicted the PS4 would do so badly even though the software lineup was a problem.

The console market is done over there. :(

When does Hyrule Warriors launch over there? I'm expecting a bit of a Wii U bump for that.

I honestly don't think it was that unpredictable. Japan doesn't do consoles. Look at it, the difference between the worst selling console (the 360) and the best selling console (the Wii U), is LESS than 10,000 units.

You can call out the PS4 as selling badly but when it comes to it, the real reason is Japan doesn't really do home consoles anymore. And actually hasn't done for a long time.

Really not sure why we post figures for Japan anymore.

I'd say a different market to us though - I can say that I for one definitely only bought MK for the free game offer.

So because the PS4 is doing badly there, they shouldn't be posted? Do you realise how much of a fanboy you sound?

Japan still matters and is relevant. Get over it.

Seems like you're deliberately avoiding his point?

That being, all home console sales are bad over there.

The irony in this post is...palpable.

I said nothing of the sort.

The console market is probably more relevant over there. :)

You're probably right actually. It'll be very interesting to see how they do receive consoles when properly supported.

What might be worth doing (by someone with the time) is figure out the percentage of sales of each console in Japan (% of all combined) and compare with other countries. Might give a more balanced figure... or at least a different one to pick apart ^_^

Overall, Sony enjoyed sales of $17.92bn, an increase of 5.8 per cent compared to the same period last year. Much of that was to do with the Game division, Sony said, as well as an increase in sales from the Pictures segment (Sony's movie business), and favourable exchange rates. On the minus side, Sony took a hit from exiting the PC business.

That currency exchange that's causing Nintendo so many problems seems to be working wonders for Sony.

Just bringing it back to Nintendo for a second, here are a couple of graphs someone of Gaf has put together using Nintendo's sales numbers.

After you eliminate the expanded audience bump you can easily see the downward trend. I didn't realise that the handhelds were on a downward trend as well.

Looking at this you can understand why Nintendo wanted to capture that expanded audience. Just a shame they couldn't hold on to them.

This is an interesting titbit. Can only good news for everyone.

Sony expects better profit due to PS4 cost reductions

Sony is making meaningful reductions to the cost of PS4 manufacture to the extent that the system's sales are contributing more profit to the business than originally anticipated, the corporation has said.

"Operating income is expected to be higher primarily due to PS4 hardware cost reductions," Sony said in a note to investors.

Though reductions to manufacturing expenditure are usual, the extent in which the PlayStation business has reduced PS4 costs appears to have caught Sony by surprise.

The corporation did not state that PS4 sells at a profit, suggesting that further savings are still required to break even on standalone hardware purchases.
