Fierce_LiNk Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 Poor Dreamcast had to hold the line by itself. I may be wrong, but would it be fair to say that retailers, developers et all were still burned by the SEGA Saturn by the time the Dreamcast came around? It never had a chance once the Playstation brand had dominated during the previous cycle of consoles. I'd kill for a SEGA console right now.

Sega's biggest issue was the japanese side of the company basically disagreed with everything the American's wanted.
Grazza Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 Yeah, that and the 32X and Sega CD. Sega's biggest issue was the japanese side of the company basically disagreed with everything the American's wanted. Not to be flippant, but that almost sounds like modern day Nintendo! The American-style GameCube days with sites like IGN championing F-Zero GX, Metroid Prime and Twilight Princess, compared to how things went a bit Yoshi, Skyward Sword and New Super Mario Bros. At least with the PS4 beasting we can finally get rid of this absurd argument people tried to make to justify the Wii U by saying 'the most powerful console never wins'. So true - that's the best thing about it. It's hard to understand, isn't it, how people wanted a powerful machine from Sony, and not PS3-tech with some "innovation" bolted onto it.
Debug Mode Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 Well, the Vita seems to have outsold the 3DS this week according to Media Create! Although things are generally heading down, I didn't expect Vita to keep a stronger position above Nintendo, even if it's only temporary. Famitsu sales beg to differ though, finding that the 3DS is in the stronger position. Any hoo, starting to realise I'm completely out of the loop with the Japanese game release schedule, might go look at that for a bit.
Hero-of-Time Posted April 18, 2014 Author Posted April 18, 2014 (edited) The NPD numbers are coming in and apparently the bunker pic on Gaf was right. It looks as though the PS4 outsold the One, despite Titanfall hitting and the huge marketing push Microsoft gave it. If all of this is true then that's a MASSIVE blow to Microsoft. Here's some rough/rumored numbers for now. Xbox One: 311K Xbox 360: 111K Still, 311k isn't anything to be ashamed of. @Emi1yRogers Wii was 28k, WiiU just over 70k,PSP around 5k, PSV little over 10k, 3DS 159k. No Nintendo press release that I can find. Wii U continues its struggle. Given that there isn't any new releases at the moment in quite surprised how high that is though. It will have another couple of months like this until Mario Kart hits. Vita is pretty much dead over there. Edited April 18, 2014 by Hero-of-Time

Interesting how that works :p Wii U is bound to do moderately to bad until either of the following happens: Mario Kart 8 is released or the launch hype for PS4 & Xbox One finally diminishes. Both should happen by May 30th, funnily enough. I honestly don't know what people expect, though. There is something that bothers me though. Hardware sales are up, but software sales are down on last year. This is not a good thing, makes you wonder who is buying the consoles for what reason. Edited April 18, 2014 by Serebii
liger05 Posted April 18, 2014 Posted April 18, 2014 Hardware: PS4: Best selling platform. Xbox One: 311K 3DS: 159K (-30.9%) Xbox 360: 111K Wii U: 70K (+4.5%) Wii: 28K Vita: 10K (-69.7%) PSP: 5K PS4 just beasting. XB1 numbers are not terrible but still I think there will be a kinect less version released. Ouch @ the Vita number. That's crazy low. DK did 84k which seems low to me. No other Wii U games released yet the userbase ignores DK. DK's sales across the board were not great and maybe its a message to Nintendo that Nintendo gamers wanted something different rather than another DK game? Goron_3 Posted April 18, 2014 Posted April 18, 2014 LTD for Wii U at 2.4 million? Unbelievably bad. Amazing sales for Sony. Top job.

liger05 Posted April 18, 2014 Posted April 18, 2014 That is just America, to be fair. Which is Nintendo's biggest market. TF doing 1 mil on XB1 is mightily impressive on that install base. Outsold Infamous 2:1.
Ashley Posted April 18, 2014 Posted April 18, 2014 Yet we don't have calls for Sony to go third party due to Vita sales and their bottomline. Interesting how that works :p Because nobody wants the Sony franchises the same way people want the Nintendo ones. Come on buck, you know this
Goron_3 Posted April 18, 2014 Posted April 18, 2014 That is just America, to be fair. 2.4m in America since Winter 2012 is just...incredibly bad.
Serebii Posted April 18, 2014 Posted April 18, 2014 2.4m in America since Winter 2012 is just...incredibly bad. Never said otherwise. Because nobody wants the Sony franchises the same way people want the Nintendo ones. Come on buck, you know this Then they should suck it up and buy Nintendo hardware and quit crying :p
Goron_3 Posted April 18, 2014 Posted April 18, 2014 Never said otherwise. I never said you did? What a pointless reply. I wonder what's going on in the heads of Microsoft atm. For many the PS4 is the console of choice because it's the cheapest place to play games like Madden, FIFA on next generation hardware. Unfortunately, I can't see them dropping Kinect as they've made it just a big part of their console, more so than Nintendo and the gamepad. A price drop will hurt their bottom line too much... They seem to have the same issue Nintendo have with the Wii U...no real options.

They seem to have the same issue Nintendo have with the Wii U...no real options. They dont need to drop kinect they can just get an Kinect less SKU out for £299. MS are seeing what others have seen in the past. Once you go past the £399 - $399 price tag you are in dangerous territory. More important is MS investing in studios as even money hatting for 3rd party exclusives would be difficult when the PS4 is selling so well so they need to invest in studios and get quality 1st party exclusives. Also drop some of the stuff behind the paywall. i.e. Netflix and other apps. Edited April 18, 2014 by liger05
Debug Mode Posted April 18, 2014 Posted April 18, 2014 Then they should suck it up and buy Nintendo hardware and quit crying :p But that's an extra couple hundred pounds It's never going to happen, we all know this, but it will always come down to how much the average consumer values Nintendo titles and whether this is justification enough to pick up Nintendo hardware. Also, I'm not sure if it's been mentioned, but the recent figures for Xbox One have been in regards to units shipped. Sony did the same early last generation, it's a very convenient way to brag about numbers heh.

Clownferret Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 Why aren't the Japanese buying PS4 games? The console is selling well but only 1 game in the charts. This trend has been apparent for some time now, they can't all be buying a PS4 to play some online update, there has to be more to it than that.

Clownferret Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 Seriously? Take a guess. I don't have a clue, I wouldn't have asked the question if I did. I know you said previously that they are all buying it to play games in a year, but I just can't get my head round that at all.
Sheikah Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 Because there aren't any games out for it yet. And by any, I mean hardly any. :p

Debug Mode Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 I thought Clownferret's point was pretty obvious to be honest. No games seem to be selling, but the console itself is, what are all these people playing?
Debug Mode Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 (edited) Because they want one? Well yeah, I think we all could work that one out. But for a video game console, is it not a point of interest that it's selling kind of well despite the fact it seems to lack any software that's selling in reasonable numbers for it? Obviously, Media Create and Famitsu sales will not be privy to digital retail figures, but I personally can't identify what could be available/selling digitally that is supporting the sales. It's impressive that it's selling without much software to support it, but it's slightly mysterious. Edited April 24, 2014 by Debug Mode
