Sheikah Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 Calling it just a 'mid-range PC' is SO facile. It really shows how little you understand the industry and its commercial reality when you label it as such. It's also cheaper than a mid-range PC with a Blu Ray drive by a long shot. For them to be selling them around £330 on Gamestop is nothing short of remarkable. You're also guaranteed games that are optimised to run on the machine even 6-7 years later; I'd like to see that on a similar priced PC without upgrades.
Serebii Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 Why do you simplify things all the time? It's not just anything. It's a machine supported by a multitude of companies that is guaranteed support for years. It is convenient; it is a content stream (with Plus); it will be the home to some of the best first party studios in the world; it's a machine that generates hype and will continue to evolve with stuff like Playstration Now; it has a vital presence in shops and at home - it's cultural relevance is so important; it is more than the sum of its parts. Calling it just a 'mid-range PC' is SO facile. It really shows how little you understand the industry and its commercial reality when you label it as such. On the contrary sir, I fully understand the industry and commercial reality. I just don't follow hyperbolic PR fluff. However, out of respect for @Ashley and this forum, I shall not continue this further. It's a circular argument that we have been down many times.
Wii Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 It's one that has proved to be very successful for both Disney and Activision. Nintendo have many characters with a certain amount of pull on people. Disney have the same effect and you just have to look at the Infinity thread on Gaf to see that it's not just casuals but gamers as well who would be interested in such a Nintendo product. If you don't like it then that's fine but I personally think it would be a great way to get kids back to playing on Nintendo console, rather than running around shooting others in the face on the likes of CoD. Good points, I personally see it as a money racket. The toy isn't necessary, it's just a hook. But I suppose that's the point. I know it's got potential to generate big profits and well Nintendo need that and it is better that kids play that than COD.
Sheikah Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 On the contrary sir, I fully understand the industry and commercial reality. I just don't follow hyperbolic PR fluff. You do when it's from Nintendo.
Daft Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 On the contrary sir, I fully understand the industry and commercial reality. I just don't follow hyperbolic PR fluff. You have no idea. There's a reason why Microsoft and Sony pump billions of dollars into these 'mid-range PCs'. I've worked at Square Enix, I've worked at an indie games studio and my job for over two years now has been to work on Xbox 360 and Xbox One strategy and marketing. I get hired and paid a lot of money because I understand the industry; I can tell you now, you clearly don't.
Retro_Link Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 Isn't Ground Zero a one hour long "game" for over £30? I don't see that as a reason to buy a PS4, I see that as a reason to think that the industry is in dire straits. It's $29.99/£19.99 for the digital version on all consoles, for an initial 2hr 'campaign' with other stuff to do afterwards. Although I still think it's a rip-off.
liger05 Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 (edited) The PS4/Xbone versions of games look almost no better than the PS3/360 versions of games either outside of a resolution increase; it's the weakest generational jump we've ever seen. Sony won because of the above reasons you listed, not because their hardware ran games at the highest resolution... The most powerful hardware has almost never won a generation, but it will do this time simply by default as MS shot themselves in the foot back when the Xbone was unveiled and they never fully recovered (and the Nintendo brand is pure manure in the eyes of the "gamer" demographic). I have Tomb Raider and even though its a port the difference between that and the version my bro was playing on the 360 is apparent. Its not just a bump to native 1080p that makes the difference but even so there is only so much you can do with ports but I would rightly still expect them to look better than the pre gen versions. I wasnt trying to argue that the PS4 being the most powerful means it wins by default. The point I was making was the Wii U versions of 360/PS3 games should of been the definitive versions considering the Wii U was newer hardware released years after those two consoles. However what we found was those games were on par or at times even worse. All it proves is that game quality means nothing for hardware adoption. Even if the same games can be played on the hardware they already own, they're gonna jump in because they know that they will have to eventually. Where else are they gonna go? It might as well be a monopoly! I think people like new things and new tech. People buy laptops, tv's, phones, tablets etc and I think expect them to be better than the ones they already own. Why should consoles be any different? Maybe the Wii U not really being that much better spec wise than the old 360/PS3 tech was the issue. How much longer do you give the Wii U? I'm guessing this time next year they'll wrap things up. Sales are down so far on last years, 8 retail releases from January to July. All the secondhand sites I look at, people are selling their Wii U's and there's little interest being shown from would be buyers. There's no way this can continue for at least another 5 years. Retailers will force their hand. Some have discontinued already and others might as well have. I seen nothing from the supposed Tesco deal, wtf was that about? It's exactly as was, nothing. The Wii U is dead and a handful of Nintendo titles scattered throughout the year won't make a blind bit of difference. Nintendo wont pull it officially but I expect there output for the console will decrease as they find the most cost effective way to ride out the generation. Now if retailers pull it then that changes everything and what choice would nintendo have other than to officially pull the plug. Edited March 4, 2014 by liger05
Sheikah Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 People who say the PS4/X1 versions of games look almost no better than the previous console's games aren't being honest or fair in their assessment. And I'm pretty sure they know it, but they've got a point they want to make. Multiformats that are quickly made to run on multiple different spec consoles aren't going to look radically different between formats. You only need look at a game designed exclusively for this generation like Infamous on the PS4 to see a very large boost from the previous gen.
liger05 Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 Exactly. The Wii U will plod along, as a relatively niche console, eventually turning a nice, albeit small, profit. Its lineup is already top-notch, and there is much more to come. It'll be remembered in years to come as a massively under-rated console. Doesnt that depend on how much the Wii U is eating into Nintendo's bottom line going forward? Come April we could see it miss the revised target and if the 3DS alone isnt enough to balance the books then what? There is no certainty that the Wii U will make Nintendo money even it is small. Production costs would usually come down but doesnt that depend on orders with manufactures. The more you do the less it costs but with the Wii U they are not producing more so wouldnt Nintendo still be paying top rate for parts and production?
Clownferret Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 I can see a new handheld/console hybrid being launched in a couple of years that will run wii u and 3ds titles and in effect allow nintendo to replace the wii u without actually dropping it officially

Wii Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 (edited) UK CHARTS: SOUTH PARK TOPS CHART, DONKEY KONG SLIDES DOWN TO 37 This week’s UK individual charts are in courtesy of GFK chart-track. It’s no surprise that South Park: The Stick of Truth has made its debut in first place, overtaking last week’s chart topper, Thief. However, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze for Wii U takes a real slip on the vine from last week’s top 20 position to 37 this week. In handheld territory, The LEGO Movie Videogame is this week’s highest 3DS game, which moves down to 29, while Pokemon Y beats Pokemon X by two places, in positions 38 and 40, respectively. The top 40 individual chart is detailed in full below. I'm also sick that we didn't get South Park: The Stick Of Truth. By all accounts the previews a while back said it was very good. Sheikah Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 It's a real shame, I can't see anything turning the Wii U around. Damn Nintendo and their lack of foresight when they designed the thing. Also I couldn't imagine in a million years that South Park would have gone on Nintendo consoles. It's one of the most graphic/disgusting (but awesome) games ever made. I just can't see Nintendo allowing that.

Daft Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 Also, that South Park game came out 15 years ago. Nintendo are...different now. Anyway, that disparity between the PS4 and XBO versions of Thief is interesting.
drahkon Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 Anyway, that disparity between the PS4 and XBO versions of Thief is interesting. Hasn't there been some discussion about the game running at 1080p/60fps on PS4 and not as good on XBO? Not sure if I remember correctly. Maybe all this talk does have an impact on sales? Or maybe it's just that there are more PS4 users
Daft Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 Well obviously. I mean it is interesting because Microsoft will need to react if that trend continues.
Goron_3 Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 Nintendo were very strong in the West during the N64 era, even despite the decision to use cartridges which basically gave them no games. IIRC the N64 sold 22m units in North America to the Playstation's 30m+.
