General Gaming Sales/Charts Discussion

Recommended Posts

Is it fair to say the UK market is really bad at the moment? I find it amazing that Aliens can drop 84% but still be 5th. Or is this a common occurrence?

Nah, it's pretty dire at the moment. To get the number 1 spot you don't have to do amazing numbers anymore. DmC didn't sell as well as DMC4, yet it still managed to get the top spot.

Hence why no Wii U titles in the top 40 for numerous weeks is shocking considering you probabably can get a title in the top 40 by selling 1000 copies.

From a post on neogaf

Thread bump. Don't know (don't think) it deserves a new thread.

So, some numbers regarding 2012, from an interview (done in mid-January) of Philippe Lavoué, "Directeur général adjoint" of Nintendo France. This interview is not available online, published in the latest issue of the JDLI (Journal des loisirs interactif), a printed magazine dedicated to the interactive entertainment industry.

Just to let you know: the Fr. website Gamekult just reported some of these datas today. I'm reporting the full stuff here, directly from the magazine.

Wii U >

- 118 000 Wii U sold (65% of the Wii sales for the same period)

- Wii U + Wii sales, for the 5 last weeks of 2012, is up to 34% compared to the same period in 2006 (I assume Wii + Gamecube).

- 372 000 Wii sold in 2012. Installed base is at 6 161 000.

- Premium Pack accounted for 90% of the Wii U sales.

- Wii U sales per pack: 75% is Nintendo Land pack, 15% for the Zombi U pack and 10% for the Basic pack.

3DS >

- 1.7 millions 3DS sold in France.

- 3DS is the system which sold the most in France in 2012: 947 000 units (it represents slightly more than 1 console for 3 sold for this entire year).

- 3DS buisness (system, games, accessories...) is 41% up in 2012.

- 3DS hardware is 20% up in value. 3DS software is 88% up in value.

- Since its launch the 3DS XL represents 70% of the 3DS sales.

- More than 40% of the 3DS userbase are girls/women.

3DS softwares:

- Mario Kart 7 LTD: 623 000 units

- Super Mario 3D Land: 584 000 units

- Nintendogs + Cats: 333 000 units

- NSMB 2 (released in August): 400 000 units

- Pr. Layton and the Miracle Mask (released in October): 142 000

- Style Savvy: Trendsetters (released in November): 85 000

3DS 3rd parties performance for 2012:

- Warner Bros. Int.: 333% up.

- Disney: 287% up.

- Activision 67% up.

- Ubisoft, "already well positioned": 18% up.

Nintendo really messed up with the basic pack. People see no value in the basic pack at all!!! No point producing anymore.

3DS doing very well in France and with the 2013 lineup the 3DS should be an absolute beast in France this year!!

The Basic Set may seem useless now, but mark my words, when the Wii U is taking off, the Basic Set will be seen as a better choice by the casuals

I came here to post the latest Japanese sales figures and I will as they differ slightly from yours @liger05 but the order remains the same.

Nintendo 3DS Continues To Rule Japan, Wii U Overtaken By Vita

The Nintendo 3DS has once again had a good week in Japan as it easily outsold the competition. Combined sales of the Nintendo 3DS were 74.729, with its closest competitor, the PlayStation 3, selling 18.529 units. Metal Gear Rising was the best-selling game in Japan overtaking Dragon Quest VII to take the number one spot. Wii U sales continued to slide and this week saw the PlayStation Vita outsell Nintendo’s latest home console. Here’s the Japanese software and hardware charts.

1. [PS3] Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

2. [3DS] Dragon Quest VII: Warriors of Eden

3. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf

4. [3DS] Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic

5. [PSP] Toaru Majutsu no Kagaku no Gun Sou Katsugeki

6. [Wii] Taiko Drum Master Wii Super Wonderful Edition

7. [3DS] New Super Mario Bros. 2

8. [3DS] Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate

9. [3DS] Fantasy Life

10.[3DS] Taiko Drum Master: Chibi Dragon and the Mysterious Orb

1. Nintendo 3DS LL – 49,317 (66,139)

2. Nintendo 3DS – 25,412 (31,832)

3. PlayStation 3 – 18,529 (16,934)

4. PlayStation Vita – 11,456 (8,044)

5. Wii U – 9,633 (10,744)

6. PSP – 8,981 (10,501)

7. Wii – 1,317 (1,655)

8. Xbox 360 – 473 (506)

Pretty embarrassing. Even the PSP nearly outsold the Wii U, nevermind the Vita beating it.

It’s terrible and the worst thing is they can do nothing about it. The Japanese release schedule since launch has been nothing short of a joke.

Here is what is confirmed up until May.

02/27 Nano Assault Neo

03/20 Need for Speed

03/28 Game & Wario

03/30 Dragon Quest X

05/02 BioHazard: Revelations

March sales are going to be real bad and the Q1 financials are going to be a bloodbath. Not a chance they will hit the revised target of 4 mil consoles sold.

Number of weeks it took the following systems to drop below 10.000 units: (Famitsu)

PS2 - 402 (week 39 and 40 it sold 8.136 and 3.306 units respectively due to supply issues)

PSP - 394

NDS - 337

Wii - 224

GBA - 214

PS3 - 27

PSV - 17

Wii U - 12

Xbox 360 - 5

GCN - 5

Xbox - 4

3DS - 24 (week before price drop)

That's a pretty catastrophic trend. I feel like the Wii U and the Vita fell into the same trap - incoherent marketing, bit-part support and an exorbitant price tag.

I wonder if Soul Sacrifice will make a difference next month.

IT'S OVER, WII U IS DEAD.

SELL YOUR CONSOLES TO CEX ASAP. USE THE MONEY TO BUY AS MUCH 3DS SOFTWARE AS YOU CAN.

THERE'S NO JUMPING SHIP FOR THIS ONE LADS, NINTENDO HAVE PROVIDED NO MEANS TO TRANSFER. YOUR EXISTENCE IS TIED TO THIS SPECIFIC SHIP.

Patience, younglings. It's not like we weren't expecting this

Nintendo clearly wasn’t as they forecasted the console would sell 5 mil (revised to 4 mil) and 24 mil games which a big chunk would be out of Japan. People may of expected this but Nintendo defiantly didn’t!!

The bulk wouldn't have been Japan because they know that Japan is primarily handheld

As a company, especially one like Nintendo who like disruption, you'd never just accept any territory as primarily anything. They would want to break through demographics, not work within them - it's why the Wii set the world on fire.

I am actually very happy with my Wii U and personally have enough games etc etc, but from afar it looks like Nintendo have treated Japan either with disdain or arrogance as far as Wii U is concerned; launched it later than everywhere else, barely supported it with any games, and am I right in thinking Nintendoland doesn't come bundled with it?

Considering it's their home turf, they are treating Japan like they used to treat us back in the days of THE!

Maybe not the bulk but they would of expected Japan to still shift a fair few amount.

Wii Sports wasn’t bundled in Japan either. Thats not the problem.

I think the hope was Pikmin and Wonderful 101 would be out for Q1. I also think they had hoped they would have had more Japanese 3rd parties to help fill the gaps but for whatever reason that didn’t happen.

In every region I think they thought Nintendoland and Mario U would be enough to at least get them through Q1.

The problem with Monster Hunter is that it was a just a HD conversion of a game that had already been out 12 months and sold 1.5m copies. And on top of that Monster Hunter 4 was due out in the Spring on the 3DS.

It was never going to sell systems in the quantities people were expecting and that's why it dropped out of the charts after 2 weeks as most who had wanted to play it had already played it and even those who hadn't saw more value in picking it up on the 3DS where there is a rich library of games to chose from - hence why the "best of" version had found it's way back into the charts recently.

They tried a similar trick in releasing Monster Hunter G right before they released Monster Hunter Tri for the Wii and that didn't do much in sales either.

I don't really know how Nintendo are going to get this thing off the ground. I posted when it was first announced that is was a bad idea to abandon the Wii so early and launch a new console.

All consoles need momentum and while there might be the occasional massive title I can't see it being enough to reach escape velocity. It took Sony three years to drag the catastrophe that was the PS3 out of the muck and it came with massive restructuring, realignment and personnel changes.

And a whole heap of money. I keep telling myself its early but the Gamecube never really got off the ground and I think the Wii U could have the same fate. I'm just not convinced 3rd parties are going to support it going forward and there is only so much nintendo can do. Once next gen hits its going to be even harder to get the system moving.

Unless perhaps they are literally following their 3DS model in everyway, have realised that the early sales are going to be rubbish, will announce mario U 3D, mario kart U at e3 with release dates this year, bottle neck pikmin 3 until late this year and just attempt to go head to head with PS4 and at least reclaim the japanese market with killer games this Christmas. Kamikaze from Nintendo, but it worked for 3DS...! Oh yeah and a price cut too, just to be safe :p

And this is what confuses me. I'm not trying to bash Nintendo here but - thus far - I've not been able to understand why they thought it would sell.

To me, it all dates back to E3 2012. Since then, I've never really understood why they thought the software would grab people. Or how they could include a 6" touchscreen and still get the console out at a good price-point. :hmm:

I'm confused by this too. What was supposed to carry the Wii U through these months? I understand that Pikmin and Wonderfull 101 slipped but they are just two games. So what else was supposed to make people want this console? Was it the gamepad? Was the Wii name supposed to do it? Nintendoland? I really don't know.

Nintendoland & Gamepad. I think Nintendo thought the Gamepad was going to be the gamechanger. Remember the focus was all on the pad and not the actual console. For now it's simply about the making sure Q2 has some titles and then try to build some momentum.

I wonder how the Vita's price drop next week will affect things (apparently, a couple of retailers dropped the price early, but not all).
