General Gaming Sales/Charts Discussion

Hopefully that bumps sales. I love my Vita. It's had the best first year of any console. Uncharted, Motorstrom, the definitive LBP, Need for Speed, yeah I'm happy.

Well...I guess the Vita isn't doing...too badly considering it hasn't released a retail game in over a month. Pffffft, tanking. Price drop, rebrand, soft-re-launch - do eeet Sony, you morons. Persona 4 next month, though.

Surprised that the Wii U figures include Nintendo Land. That is dire.

Otherwise nothing is really that surprising. Except maybe that 2 million games were sold last month when there were very few (no good one?) releases.

The vita's doing terribly. The dire wii u figures don't change that the vita numbers are dreadful. The worrying thing is the uk is the strongest market in Europe for the vita and it's doing nothing great here.

Wedbush / EEDAR January 2012 hardware sales estimates (change year-on-year):

360 - 180,000 (-33%) / 260,000 (-4%)

3DS - 160,000 (-7%) / 120,000 (-30%)

PS3 - 145,000 (-24%) / 120,000 (-37%)

Wii U - 125,000 (n/a) / 110,000 (n/a)

DS - 60,000 (-21%) / 31,000 (-59%)

Wii - 52,200 (-66%) / 39,000 (-74%)

Vita - 45,000 (n/a) / 35,000 (n/a)

PSP - 7,500 (-63%) / (n/a)

PS2 - 300 (-96%) / (n/a)

Total - 775,000 (-13%) / 715,000 (-20%)

Will be interesting to see the NPD numbers as Pachter last month said the Wii U did 600k in December and he was wrong. If the Wii U does do 125k in Jan it would actually be better than I feared. Worried it could go below 100k.

The DS seems like its going to keep hurting the 3DS numbers in the US for ages.

True story:

I was talking to my workmate last night, really nice bloke. He was raving on about how good Ocarina of Time, Goldeneye 64 and Metroid Prime were, but he stopped playing Nintendo after that (same with every gamer I know in real life). I was telling him about the Wii U and after a while the conversation went like this:

Him: "When's it out?"

Me: "Which game?"

Him: "No, the Wii U."

Sad but true.

It's funny, I hadn't really considered that - but I've had conversations with people I'd call gamers(and Nintendo ones at that) since the Wii U's been out, and I've had that same question at least 3 or 4 times already.

Animal Crossing went up. A beast!!

Nice opening for Dragon Quest.

The 3DS is unstoppable. The Wii U manages to still stay above 10k.

Vita still dead.

The 3DS will be past the Wii Ltd sales soon.

Hory shettt those Dragon Quest sales!

Animal Crossing is probably going to remain high on that chart for a while, thanks to it selling out very quickly and the fact that stock is regularly coming in. Amazon seems to get more in stock every week and a few days.

Really interested to see how both do when they come to the western markets, eventually. 3DS is certainly beasting in JPN though!

Animal crossing did wonders on the west on the DS but different market now. Still with the right push I would still expect it to do very well in the US.

Those Dragon Quest numbers are beastly. Besides the 3DS sales which are brilliant, the rest are embarrassing. For new hardware you'd expect better from Wii U and Vita.

Can't wait for the inevitable internet shit storm when Vita gets a bump above the Wii U sales figures.

I think most have now assumed it will happen. When you release no games generally people will not buy the console. Lesson not learnt.

I guess, but I got the vibe after the Wii frenzy no one was even close. I guess it helps that the 360 had an extra year, too.

Will have an extra few more years too, considering Durango hasn't been unveiled yet and further considering it's sounding like a real piece of shit that most 360 users are going to keep where they are or jump ship to PlayStation.

Not confirmed yet but if that ends up being the number then Reggie as well as others in management will be lucky to keep there jobs. 55k in Jan with no games coming means we could see 30k in feb.

GAMECUBE

LAUNCHED IN AMERICA NOVEMBER 2001

NPD, January 2002----------59K

WII U

LAUNCHED IN AMERICA NOVEMBER 2012

NPD, January 2013-----------55K

...January 2002 was the worst month for the Gamecube in its entire history.

Yikes. Third parties are not going to go near the wii u until sales increase tenfold. Nintendo have messed the launch up so bad in every region.

Reliant on the 3DS now as the wii u sales are only going to get worse.

While that number isn't good in any sense of the word, there are clear reasonings for it:

1. It's a new console. Obvious, yes. However, unlike the others, there are no special money saving deals for it, especially post-Christmas. In these times of dire economic straits, where everyone's looking for the best deal, it's not that uncommon

2. No new games. Above all else to drive sales, it's new games.

I also maintain that if third parties hadn't given the Wii U shoddy ports months after their original release, this wouldn't be an issue

I have no doubt it'll bounce back.

Its a Vita situation. 3rd parties aren't gonna touch it as the sales are low, but they are so low because there are no games.

They aren't fully to blame though. The Criterion interview states that the online wasn't fully ready on the Wii U and the development tools weren't optimised either. If 3rd parties had done good jobs on their games then we would be looking at March releases for them, just like Need For Speed. Basically it looks as though things were rushed and down to the wire for a lot of developers.

55k in a five week reporting period. That's so bad!! The console can bounce back but before then sales are going to be brutal. I want to say I'm surprised but you look at the releases and how they have marketed the console and you see there is a huge problem.

Remember the game cube never bounced back so there is no guarantee of that.

PS3+Wii = 300k so unless the PS3 sold more than 245k then the wii u sold less than a console that has been dead for 2 years.

This is brutal and it's a self perpetuating problem. No games = no console sales and vice versa. It's not just that sales are bad, they're also creating a bad image with the public. Poor launch, slow OS, bricked consoles, gimped ports, eShop 18+ purchases restricted, lack of 3rd party support, sparse release list, poor audio connectivity, no analogue triggers, no VC, perceived weak specs, no killer AAA+ title, no advertising, delayed games, etc, etc, etc. What is the point of a years head start if you make a total balls of it?

To be fair, very few consoles have actually bricked. The reports of bricking all stemmed from that idiot G4 presenter who decided to unplug it as it was updating.

Perception is a factor that needs to be sorted though, specs especially. Digital Foundry has been ragging on the Wii U so much. With their recent GPU bit, they declared it rubbish despite saying there was a lot they were unclear with.

...And everything else on that list?

Ok, if you want me to repeat what I've been saying the past couple of months

Poor launch - Relative. It wasn't great but it wasn't poor. It all depends what you were expecting

Slow OS - I've timed it and it's faster than the Xbox360 OS for me

Gimped ports - Agreed

eShop 18+ purchases restricted - Europe only, forced by German law. Not Nintendo's fault at all

Sparse release list - Agreed, it could be better...but what launch actually has a steady stream of games within the following six months?

Poor audio connectivity - I guess some prefer for it to each be separate, but I have it all hooked up through my TV so not really relevant to me, and countless others

No analogue triggers - Irrelevant

No VC - Irrelevant

No killer AAA+ title - Relative

No advertising - agreed

Delayed games - Annoying, but for the greater good. I'd rather not have crap rushed games.

I think the VC is relevant. I think there are even nintendo fans sitting on the fence with the wii u and things like no vc on launch gives them another reason not to bite.
