flameboy Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 (edited) I simply had to start a thread for this game. Here's Giant Bomb's page on the game; http://www.giantbomb.com/hotline-miami/61-39452/ Here is a video of it: Still here? So yeah basically it's a top down shooter that's more like a puzzler. You're almost encouraged to die to try out new things, the fact that is has super quick restarts encourages this. It's fucking brutal in a Drive kind of way, it has a cool soundtrack, it's the second game to feature a Delorean this year...did I mention it has talking animals, hallucinations, a NES, pizza, booze. It's available to buy on Steam and GOG and implore everyone who wants something a little different to try it. Sure it has crude graphics but there is a certain charm to it. I'm two chapters from the end and maybe put in about 2 and half hours/3. So much fun and definitely a contender for GOTY up there with The Walking Dead and Journey for me. Don't believe me? Check out the metacritic page: http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/hotline-miami and some quotes: Giant Bomb Enjoying Hotline Miami doesn't make you a worse person, though you may find yourself wrestling with just why the act of deftly delivered murder is so damn much fun. It is because it's a lovingly crafted game, well-designed and deeply addictive. Edge Magazine It's a puzzle game and a strategy game as much as an action game, then, and like Rockstar's Manhunt, it will sicken you even as it provides its murky thrills. Gamer.nl Let's just say it: Hotline Miami isn't for everyone. It's brutal, bloody and extraordinarily unforgiving. Thanks to Hotline Miami, the 8-bit top-down shooter genre gets put in the spotlight again after Retro City Rampage. It deserves the attention. Well, if you can stomach countless retries and a dozen smashed skulls. Edited November 9, 2012 by flameboy
Magnus Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 This has been getting great reviews, but it looks so bad. I feel like I'm missing something. I kind of want to play it just because of the critical acclaim, but it looks so unappealing that I just don't know if it's worth it.
jayseven Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 I also have guilty feelings -- I'd play it if it was available on XBLA... I'm not a PC gamer. If you fancy giiving me a decent gaming set-up then I'm sure that status will quickly change, but as it is it's very hard to get uber excited about a game I can't play :P

I have a Samsung netbook nc10 and it runs fine! I by no means a pc gamer at all.
jayseven Posted November 10, 2012 Posted November 10, 2012 I also don't have a bank account at the moment so I can't digitally purchase anything - should've mentioned that :P

Buy on PC 2. Plug in 360 controller (i know i know you'll say it isnt this simple etc) I'd be tempted by this if it was a bit cheaper, recent halo-ings(and other stuff) got me running a tight wallet. I kind of want to play it just because of the critical acclaim, but it looks so unappealing that I just don't know if it's worth it. Honestly try it, its something different and there are enough little touches that I don't want to wreck that have clever usage of the graphics they chose. I also don't have a bank account at the moment so I can't digitally purchase anything - should've mentioned that :P The developer has actually taken the bizarre move of not discouraging piracy...saying he understands what it means to be broke and he wants everyone to experience the game. He has even asked seeders to update their torrents to the more recent versions. I got mine via GOG so its DRM free which I guess is the version that's being distributed on torrent sites. Just finished the game and it was really something else.
Choze Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 http://store.steampowered.com/app/219150/ Steam Sale £3.49
flameboy Posted June 21, 2013 Author Posted June 21, 2013 This comes out next week on PS3 and Vita: http://www.destructoid.com/psn-gets-hotline-miami-with-an-exclusive-mask-next-week-256749.phtml Just yesterday, it wasn't a sure thing that Hotline Miami would drop for PlayStation Network next week, but now it is: Tuesday has been locked down. This version, which supports Cross-Buy on PlayStation Vita and PS3, has an exclusive mask. Russell the raging bull makes the game look like that image up there when worn. Neat! This was one of the only Vita titles I wasn't able to play at E3. And, if you know me, you know that I tried. Again and Again. But every time I made it to the Sony booth, someone was on the Hotline Miami station. It does seem like such an ideal match for the handheld. Whilst it may not look much it is an incredible game!!!! I implore everyone to get it! I bought it when it first came out and even though it was quite a glitchy affair I still enjoyed it so much. Was one of my games of the year last year. Can't wait to get it second time round.
Cube Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 I got it on Humble Bundle. Can someone explain the game to me because it completely sucked when I played it?
flameboy Posted June 21, 2013 Author Posted June 21, 2013 I got it on Humble Bundle. Can someone explain the game to me because it completely sucked when I played it? I guess it's just the atmosphere it creates I really bought into the music helping create an awesome experience. I love the whole tone of the game the weird characters giving you instructions with no idea what to do. The puzzle like one more go nature of the levels was spot on and this was exemplified not better than the post game puzzle mode.
Choze Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 Its out on PSN. Cross buy PS3 and Vita. How are both versions?
flameboy Posted June 27, 2013 Author Posted June 27, 2013 Its out on PSN. Cross buy PS3 and Vita. How are both versions? I've only played PS3, it took a bit of an adjustment going form keyboard and mouse to controller but the snap on feature and the scanning ahead works. I hear due to lack of L2,R2 the Vita version uses the touchscreen to snap onto a target (let's you strafe around and easier aim to throw items) which could be annoying but does mean it's more accurate. Sometimes using the controller you kind of have to scroll through targets. I'm in love with this game all over again, the sheer brutality of the combat is so well realised considering the games simple graphics. The sound design and music is perfect, ever since I've finished the PC version had the sound track on my phone and it's so nice to be back playing the game with those songs pounding out of my TV.

drahkon Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 Been playing this for the last 30 minutes. Its brutality is great. That I find its brutality great is horrifying. The music. Amazing. The atmosphere. Amazing. Hurting other people. Amazing. I hate this game. I hate that I love it. I hate that I love the violence. I'm dead serious. I mean everything I said.
Ville Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 @drahkon What b the problem man? It's shotgun-to-the-face good. I really don't care about the middle bits, but the action is simple, brutal and challenging. Currently at chapter 9.
Happenstance Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 I barely ever used guns when I completed Hotline Miami, much prefered keeping quiet.
drahkon Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 @drahkon What b the problem man? It's shotgun-to-the-face good. Never said it's bad :p I just don't like that I enjoy the violence. I've played a lot of violent games but I never 'savoured' killing people in games before. With Hotline Miami it feels different. Don't really know how to explain it properly.
Helmsly Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 yeah picked this up in the steam summer sale too and played it non stop until I found everything; all masks weapons etc. The soundtrack is also amazing and available on steam so I picked that up as well. I barely ever used guns when I completed Hotline Miami, much prefered keeping quiet. Same here. I actually found the knife to be one of the better weapons. I also can't aim those guns half of the time.

Yep knife for me as well then the masks that either make doors lethal or dogs ignore you.
Ville Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 Ok, I just beat both the campaign and the extra missions after. Cool game with just the right amount of challenge. The masks? At first I used the lethal fists one, then more ammo and silent weapons. Favourite weapon is definitely the shotgun: large spread and kills with one shot.

Yes just the right amount of challenge because its fair. I used lethal doors or dogs don't attack. Try to not use guns where possible.
drahkon Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 Will probably finish the game tomorrow. I felt the urge to watch Drive again after playing Hotline Miami for 2 hours. And I bought the soundtrack.

Ville Posted July 14, 2013 Posted July 14, 2013 I turns out this game has a fair share of extra stuff as well. All extra weapons unlocked, and collected all the masks from the levels as well. Then I found out there's also a secret ending, as every level has a letter (small purple square) hidden in it. Now that's replay value, got 6 already... Mask of choice? Silent gunfire.
