drahkon Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 From Wikipedia Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is an upcoming single-player role-playing video game for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows. Ken Rolston, the lead designer of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, will act as the game's lead designer. Additionally, noted fantasy author R.A. Salvatore created the game universe and lore, with Todd McFarlane, creator of Spawn, working on the artwork. It is being developed by 38 Studios and Big Huge Games for release in early 2012. Gameplay Kingdoms of Amalur will feature "5 distinct regions, 4 playable races, and 3 class trees with 22 abilities per tree." The player starts off as a "blank slate," waking up in a pile of corpses after returning from the dead. The game will utilize a unique "destiny" system, whereby the player can invest in a skill-tree system to unlock various "destinies," which acts as the class system for the game. Combat works based on the timing of button presses, similar to the style of an action RPG, with occasional quicktime events like those in the God of War series. Lead combat designer Joe Quadara, however, emphasized that, "Twitch skill is only going to get you so far. Strategy and proper RPG playing is going to get you farther." 38 Studios founder Curt Schilling said that the style of the game would be a marriage between God of War and Oblivion. Trailer Official Site Looks great. I love that it's single-player.
The Bard Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 Todd McFarlane, creator of Spawn, working on the artwork. All you need to know. This is gonna stink something fierce.
drahkon Posted March 1, 2012 Author Posted March 1, 2012 Major bumpage. It's been out some time, anybody playing this? I'm getting really into it. Played for 22 hours and only scratched the surface. It's fairly easy, but still great fun.
Ellmeister Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 Yeah, I've decided to go down the path of the rogue, think I'm level 18. I enjoy it but feel like it can get repetitive at times. So I take a break. I'm up to the story mission of following Agarth to find the people that keep managing to find me.
drahkon Posted March 1, 2012 Author Posted March 1, 2012 I enjoy it but feel like it can get repetitive at times. So I take a break. The biggest problem of RPGs. What I love about KoA is the way the side quests have amazing stories. The things you need to do are generic RPG stuff, but the characters' back stories keep me going. While the combat is great it does get repetitive, although every 4-5 levels, depending on how you use your ability points, you get one or two new moves that change combat quite a bit. For me, in the long run, Kingdoms of Amalur will probably turn out to be better than Skyrim. New DLC will be out on March 20th, as well. The Legend of Dead Kel - IGN preview The Legend of Dead Kel - Official Site The legendary pirate Dead Kel and his Hanged Men have returned to haunt the seas of northern Amalur. Embark on a journey to the distant island of Gallows End with the eccentric Captain Brattigan in an adventure that will uncover a secret so great that it has incited wars and toppled kingdoms. Discover powerful new weapons and Twist of Fate Cards and use them to conquer the island's unique inhabitants. Become the Lord of Gravehal Keep and lay claim to this once great fort that stands upon the edge of a cliff in the most expansive player housing option yet. In an extensive new story and a host of new side quests, battle treacherous new enemies and face exciting new challenges on the mysterious island of Gallows End. For 800 MS points on XBox Live or $9,99 on PSN.
Ellmeister Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 I wish the things I did made more of a difference like ME3. Would be amazing. Stealth kills are definitely the best part of this.
Deathjam Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 The demo of this was alot better than expected. Will probably pick this up when it goes cheap.
Ellmeister Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 I've finished the house of ballads quests. They were quite good actually.
drahkon Posted March 5, 2012 Author Posted March 5, 2012 I've finished the house of ballads quests. They were quite good actually. That's the thing about KoA:R. The quests are generally standard collect, kill, fetch quests, but the backstory of each is great. I skip most of the dialogue beacuse I try to find out as much about the gameplay/items/level lock system as I can. My second playthrough (probably Might only) will be story based. : peace: I'm level 27 now. Gonna finish exploring the green areas from the map (quests, lorestones, several treasures): After that I'll move on to Detyre (the desert (?) area). 30 hours into the game, I'm still enjoying it.
Ganepark32 Posted June 28, 2012 Posted June 28, 2012 Bit of a bump on this one here but nevertheless... Picked this up on Sunday for £17 and although I've only played about 7 hours so far, the game isn't sitting well with me. I wanted some form of RPG to play and I'm not really wanting to pick up Skyrim right now given just how much time I put into Oblivion back in the day (e.g. my brother would leave for school and come home at 3pm and I'd still be playing it :/) when I'm currently trying to sort out aspects of my life. So thought I'd have a go with this where I could jump in for an hour here or there as there's generally positive regard surrounding it. But it feels very repetitive. Very Fable-esque but without the sense of humour. It's giving me that same feeling that Fable 3 gave me where I simply didn't care for the world or characters. Perhaps if I moved to do more of the main storyline rather than the side quests (which are pretty bog standard fare, the usual tired selection that props up so many RPGs these) I'd find something to enjoy but it's all decidedly 'meh...'. Not sure whether to keep plugging away, shelve the game or just trade it in really. This seems to be happening more and more often with me and games lately. They're just not invigorating me like they used to. Oh well
Jimbob Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 I played the demo a few months ago (mainly to get the extra stuff for Mass Effect 3). The game itself, even though it were a demo certainly looked like something from the 360's early days. Didn't play too well either, and i wanted the demo to end. Not my cup of tea to be fair.

I think I actually agree....I largely played for the same reasons as you and was hoping I'd be surprised and it would be a title to pick up later down the line but the demo was so disappointing and boring I wouldn't buy this unless it was dirt dirt cheap.
Deathjam Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 I actually enjoyed the demo and am looking to pick it up when it is nice and super cheap. Was waiting for a gaming drought too but that doesn't seem to be coming anytime soon....
Deathjam Posted September 10, 2013 Posted September 10, 2013 Hmmm thought I should bump this with an interesting article Why didn't everyone play Kingdoms of Amalur This is actually a really fun game. In some ways, more enjoyable than Skyrim (combat namely) and really good valu for money if loooooooooooooong games are your thing. If you downloaded from PS+, give it a try, though the PC version looks MILES better and I am contemplating buying it during a sale for a second playthru on PC.

Yeah, I still have it to play thanks to PS+. A lad I know has been playing it recently and has said how great it is. He seems to be really enjoying it.
drahkon Posted September 11, 2013 Author Posted September 11, 2013 @Deathjam I hate you...now I want to play this again But my backlog. DAMN YOU! *inserts disk into PS3*
Tales Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 Yeah, I still have it to play thanks to PS+. A lad I know has been playing it recently and has said how great it is. He seems to be really enjoying it. It's a very good game. I had an awesome time getting platinum on this.
ThePigMarcher Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 (edited) Hmmm thought I should bump this with an interesting article Why didn't everyone play Kingdoms of Amalur Great read and the only thing I'd disagree with is the claim that it's riddled with bugs. In my 100hr+ playthrough when I had the 360 I only had one side quest that glitched out on me and never ran into anything else buggy. I actually remember being really impressed with just how bug-free the game was, given it's scale. That said, I know I'm in the minority and was probably just bloody lucky. In fact, the only real issue I had with the game was a complete lack of challenge as it was far too easy to blacksmith something that would carry you through a large chunk of the game. When I switched platforms, it was also one of the first games that I re-purchased for the PS3 but I've just not found the time to return to that particular playthrough. Reading that article may be just what I need to get back to this gem of a game. Edited September 12, 2013 by ThePigMarcher
Deathjam Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 I found it become quite repetitive. One thing you could do is respec for a totally different build to spice things up. I actually found that I couldn't control enemies properly in a rogue/mage hybrid build so I respecced fully into rogue and found it much more fun firstly, and quite different to the playstyle I had before. Had to turn difficulty up to as well.
Ellmeister Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 I think I'm repeating myself saying it is repetitive. That's a little sad. Once my exams are done I think I'll try to get back into this.
