ReZourceman Posted April 22, 2011 Posted April 22, 2011 I gather some people have played mafia games in IRL? How do they work? I think we need to do one at the meet if it is straightforward.
EddieColeslaw Posted April 22, 2011 Posted April 22, 2011 It's a been a few years since I played mafia IRL, but here's the basic game as far as I remember: 0. Everyone sits in a circle. One person is the narrator, and a small fraction of the group are mafia. This is decided by drawing playing cards somehow. 1. Night: the narrator will tell everyone to close their eyes, except for those who are mafia, who decide who to kill. Once it's decided, they point at someone. The narrator then tells the mafia to close their eyes. 2. Now the policeman opens their eyes and points at a random person. If they're mafia, they get arrested in the day. 3. After the policeman closes their eyes, the doctor opens their eyes and points at a random person. If they were killed, they get revived in the day. 4. Day: everyone opens their eyes, and the narrator announces who's dead. The dead person can remain in the circle, but can't talk. Everyone else can discuss and choose someone to lynch as mafia. And of course the roles can be themed, and the narrator can tell it like a proper story.
Ellmeister Posted April 22, 2011 Posted April 22, 2011 How would you have any clue as to who the mafia was without revealing you're the policeman or doctor or another useful role for the mafia to kill?
Dannyboy-the-Dane Posted April 22, 2011 Posted April 22, 2011 How would you have any clue as to who the mafia was without revealing you're the policeman or doctor or another useful role for the mafia to kill? You don't. But since it's real life, it's MUCH easier (and loads more entertaining) to read people's body language. I know there is a playing card version of the game called Werewolf, which has a number of roles that work much like the basic roles of Mafia, only in a fantasy setting. You could easily make your own roles, but it's very difficult to be GM if you make them too complicated. Also, the GM's narration can easily make a great game completely epic. Regarding the meet, I can bring a few games along like Munchkin, Stratego and chess.
Cube Posted April 22, 2011 Posted April 22, 2011 1. Night: the narrator will tell everyone to close their eyes, except for those who are mafia, who decide who to kill. Once it's decided, they point at someone. The narrator then tells the mafia to close their eyes. I can't really see that working very well.
ReZourceman Posted April 22, 2011 Author Posted April 22, 2011 Ah, thats clever and interesting. It sounds like....IRL Pokemafia.....is doable.
Mr-Paul Posted April 22, 2011 Posted April 22, 2011 I've played it IRL a few years ago, before NE mafia. the way we played it was one or two mafia, one cop, one doctor, one doctor. not as fun as internet mafia tbh.
Dannyboy-the-Dane Posted April 22, 2011 Posted April 22, 2011 (edited) I can't really see that working very well. Why not? It works fine. Also, how fun it gets is REALLY up to the players themselves. Trying to compare it to an internet mafia game is pointless since the parameters are totally different. But if people go with an open mind, it can become hilarious. EddieColeslaw Posted April 22, 2011 Posted April 22, 2011 I can't really see that working very well. Why not? Btw the narrator knows everyone's roles in advance. Also don't have everyone sit too close, or it'll be easy to detect the movement of someone beside you pointing/gesturing at others.
Nintendohnut Posted April 22, 2011 Posted April 22, 2011 I've played it before, it worked pretty well and was good fun with just 5 people. Look up a card game called Bang! It's very mafia like, with outlaws and a sherriff etc. Each player has a different role and power, and get power up cards each turn. It can be pretty complicated, but if you get a group of people who are up for a mafia game it's perfect. You need at least 5 people to play it sadly, but I can't tell you how awesome it is. Google it ftw!
Rummy Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 Oh tyeah I got your text, think I was drunk or tired though. Talk to Marcamillian, he's been long keen on doing one and I think he knows all about it also. Also cos like, I won't be at the meet.
Marcamillian Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 http://eblong.com/zarf/werewolf.html -- general rules for warewolf/mafia much the same as eddie said.] There's also a site that's got a whole bunch of IRL games http://ludocity.org/wiki/Category:Playable_games ..... http://ludocity.org/wiki/The_Gossip_Game sounds like something closer to our mafias, more flavour.
jayseven Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 (dannyboy - I'll be bringing chess so don't weigh yourself down with a set as well!)
