Wonder if anyone was vaguely aware of this that runs every year? I was thinking of doing it! Here are a few bits of info about it

http://extralife.sarcasticgamer.com/wp/

Extra Life began in 2008 as a way of honoring a young lady named Victoria Enmon. Tori’s battle against acute lymphoblastic leukemia (A.L.L.) inspired the Sarcastic Gamer Community in a way that is difficult to describe. Members sent in video games and bought gifts to try to keep Tori’s spirits up despite numerous hospital stays and 3 bouts with the deadly disease.

Tragically, we lost Tori to cancer in January of 2008. Later that year, I asked my partners at Sarcastic Gamer if they would be interested in Extra Life, a 24-hour video game marathon to raise money for the hospital that treated and fought1 beside Tori. In 2008 and 2009 Extra Life raised a combined $302,000 dollars, 100% of which went directly to help kids like Tori at my local Children’s Miracle Network hospital (Texas Children’s).

While thousands of gamers, over 100 websites, and over 12,000 donors were more than happy to support Extra Life, many expressed their desire to raise money to help kids closer to home. In what I can only consider destiny, in 2009 I left behind my radio career and went to work full time for Children’s Miracle Network, as a Radiothon Director. This life-changing event gave me unique insight into an incredible non-profit organization that helps to heal kids all over the United States, Canada, UK, and Australia.

I quickly realized that CMN would be the perfect solution to expanding Extra Life into more communities.

This year, when you sign up to play video games for 24 hours on October 16th, 2010, you won’t just be raising money for kids. You’ll be supporting LOCAL kids and their families. Kids right in your own back yard.

100% of the money you raise in Extra Life 2010 will go directly to the Children’s Miracle Network Hospital closest to you.

Do you want to have more fun than you can probably handle, while helping out some of the bravest (and smallest) warriors in your community? Here’s all you have to do.

Register and create your personal fundraising page.

Try to get at least 4 friends or family members to sponsor you at $1.00 per hour ($24.00 each)

Sit on your rear end and play video games for 24 straight hours on Saturday October 16th begining at 8:00am in your local timezone.

I also encourage you to take this opportunity to learn more about your local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital and to meet some of the kids that we’ll be working to help.

When EXACTLY is Extra Life?

Extra Life begins at exactly 8:00 AM in your local timezone on Saturday, October 16th and ends at 8:00 AM in your local timezone on Sunday, October 17th. This gives people that have to work on Friday a chance to rest up and be fresh when it begins. There’s also a make-up date the following Saturday. If you can’t make that day work, you can do Extra Life whenever it is convenient for you. Some folks even break it up into 2 pieces because of commitments to family or work.

What if I can’t commit to that date or the entire time?

The idea and spirit of this is that everyone pulls together at the same time, but we know that’s not going to be possible. Don’t let a commitment on the 16th stop you from joining Extra Life. Just do what you can and make up the game time later on or in pieces. What matters most is the time you put in BEFORE the event to raise money for these kids.

Which countries may participate?

Extra Life is open to EVERY country on planet Earth. Martians accepted on a case by case basis. THe money you raise, by default, are directed to your closest Children’s Miracle Network Hospital. (You can change this in your personal settings)

Are donations from my country tax deductible?

The short answer is PROBABLY. Children’s Miracle Network is a 501©3 non-profit organization. All donors will receive a tax receipt.

What kind of games qualify for the Extra Life marathon?

All games. From PS3 to poker on your phone. Everything counts. Facebook games even!

What if I can’t finish the full 24 hours due to commitments or exhaustion?

If you won’t be able to finish the whole thing, you can make up the hours you are missing anytime afterward. It’s all on the honor system, and what really matters is that we’re all raising money for a great cause. Your sponsors should know that they are supporting the cause whether you crash on hour 18 or not.

Can I start my own team?

Absolutely.

How is the money collected? Where does it go?

All funds are collected by Children’s Miracle Network and dispersed directly to the hospital that the participant selected during the registration process. By default, this is the CMN hospital closest to their home zipcode. There is an interface for your sponsors to make credit card or check card donations, as well as a way for you to register gifts that you personally collect in your local area. At no time is Sarcastic Gamer or any non-CMN entity in posession of ANY donations that come through your personal page.

Can I sponsor myself?

Of course. Or in the spirit of team work, you could also opt to sponsor a fellow participant.

How many sponsors do I need to get?

We are asking each gamer to find at least 4 people in their lives to sponsor them at 1 dollar per hour, to raise a minimum of 96 dollars. (So 1 sponsor at 4 dollars per hour works too!)

Is there a free t-shirt in this?

Yes! Everyone who raises at least $192 will receive a FREE Extra Life T-Shirt, courtesy of our generous sponsors at SplitReason!

I'd love to do this, but I'd worry about people (Sponsors) not taking it seriously. I imagine people would be a bit odd about giving money away so that I could play computer games for 24hrs.

Maybe we could organise an NE 24hr sesh? Get a load of people in one place and then a separate group of individual people who join over Live/PSN etc?

If you had the evidence to back it up I'm pretty sure more sponsors would donate.

I'd love to try something like this but I doubt I could get many people to sponsor me, most of my friends are students and half my family are currently unemployed.

Heh.

But I seriously hope someone considers doing it, what a brilliant idea.:bowdown:

YES! We should. I mean on the website you can get enter as a team/website so if we enter as N-Europe or something and we could collectively collect the money? I think you would be better placed to meet up because of your closeness to both Happenstance and Rez.

Most people I know would think I'm joking.

I was thinking maybe streaming over ustream.tv as proof but yeah I do think I would struggle to get sponsors people are work wouldn't as they would think its not worth it...also my family would not indulge me in it because I'm sure they think thats all I do anyway.

My place is a bit small for 4 people, although I suppose if some people only played on portable systems/laptops we might be able to do it. We could obviously swap and whatever.

I've got Phantasy Star Portable and WoW to keep me busy, so I wouldn't mind sticking to the handhelds/laptop for most of it.

We'd need a good co-op for the TV consoles to amuse 2 people for long periods.

I've also got my retro collection to keep us amused.

Remind me closer to the time and I'll be up for hosting it.

well its in less than a month. where are you based btw? I mean I have plenty of room probably but only one tv, oh no wait I do have a second tv. However I'm in Yorkshire.

If we get enough people doing it we could add the site to the cause as well as entering as contestants....

I'm between Oxfordshire and Northamptonshire.

If we could acquire a decent second TV, my living room would probably be big enough for us. Our living room TV isn't really for gaming as it's plasma, but I could drag my one from my room through. We'd just need a decent second TV. I'd also need to kick my parents out for 24 hours.

Unless someone else has a place we could use with enough room/TVs/decent net connection? I wouldn't mind travelling to Yorkshire if you wanted to host it?

Edit: We need to have a webcam on/recording for the whole thing too BTW.

I don't mind where we have it to be honest. It's up to you if you want to host it. I don't mind hosting, but I really don't think my place would be the best.

Unless we have some mansion owner with tonnes of massive TV's to play on?

well like I said I don't mind hosting...I think I have enough room...my lounge is quite big...got plenty of chairs (a sofa, an armchair and 4 dining chairs...

EDIT:

We have a page!

https://www.hospitalshelpingkids.org/ExtraLife/team.aspx?id=9DE53858

Please join and even if we don't get the meet going and even if you can't turn up, please play and get some donations every little bit matters!

I've decided I'm 100% going for this so anyone who wishes to donate to me can do so via their website over here:

https://www.hospitalshelpingkids.org/ExtraLife/m.aspx?i=19735445FBCC69DA6

It says sponsor $1 per hour but I'm really not expecting anyone to do this! You can do it via credit card or paypal so please help me get the ball rolling. The target works out at £59 btw!

Just creating an account now. I'm definitely up for this. And I'm definitely up for a meet to do it, even if it involves travelling quite a way.

Edit: Done. I'm in the group too.

I am absolutely up for this aswell, providing I'm around (ie, not when I'm in Florida) as it'd be fun and for a good cause. Not too sure how much I could sponsor if I'm not there, due to no job, but I'll try as best as possible, and if I can make it I'll whip my FB into donating loadz.

Do we have a date brah?

oh ffs. Does it have to be 16th October?

ReZ its not set in stone the 16th they say as long as you do it at some point. I guess the 16th would be ideal as we get caught up in the momentum of everyone else in the world doing it! They do say do it whenever you can and the weekend afterwards is sort of a catch up weekend. I dunno the more the merrier for the meet up I guess.

It's great to see people doing it now to try get those sponsors and start arranging the meet.

Im gonna have to get some new games to play over the next few weeks now. Dont think its best to rely on my rentals either. Need something that will hold my attention for long portions, not gonna be easy as my gaming attention span is down to about 10 minutes then I switch it off.

I've got tons of games I could play through gonna be tough to decide what to play. Could also pull out some retro stuff as well.
