From the front, the resemblance is pretty close. Probably not too late to change. I don't think tortoises understand or respond to their names anyway, so you can call him whatever you want. Goafer
So this happened: Seeing as I work from home and I've just passed my probation, making my job much safer, we figured the time was right to get a dog. His name's Bru and he's a rescue dog from Dog's Trust. He is incredibly nervous, especially around men. The times we went to see him at the kennels were hard to say the least. He would just bark at us and show clear signs of distress. I had only managed to pet him once during my visits and that was immediately after giving him a treat. Before we met him, he had been so nervous that he very almost chewed his tail off. Fortunately the vets just about managed to save it. We brought him home today and since we've got him home, he's been a completely different dog. When we picked him up, he ran over to our car and jumped straight in. He didn't bark at all on the way home and throughout most of the day. He's had cuddles with both me and Maddie, which is still hard to believe. He responds to his name and will come to us wherever we are in the house. Given that he wouldn't step within about 5 metres of me at the kennels, this is a miracle. It must have been the kennels that made him so nervous. He's still a bit wary when he's in the garden, but it's manageable and quite understandable given the new noises. Our only worry now is that he'll grow dependent on us. He does tend to follow us around the house, especially Maddie. Hopefully he'll get better as he becomes more comfortable around the house and his confidence grows. Edited September 16, 2018 by Goafer
Goafer
Bru is settling in well and after 3 years of living here, we've finally socialised with other people in the village. Bru got on really well with almost all of the dogs and has definitely shown his Collie instincts, as he tried to herd his new best friend Jack. His fear of strangers is pretty much gone, with only the occasional man that he doesn't like. He can still be jumpy at times, but he's come a hell of a long way. Finally got some decent photos as well:
Goafer
Seeing as I now have a phone that can do super slow motion video, I thought I'd test it on the dog: (The music was not my choice, apparently the phone adds music of it's own)

Goafer
Bru has become quite the sneaky bastard. When we leave the house, we tell him to go to bed and he runs upstairs and lays on his bed. God knows how he learned this, as we've never really put much effort into it. We've noticed a few times when we come home that a patch of carpet at the top of the stairs is warm, presumably from where he's been lying on it, but he's always on his bed when we come in the door. We've started to wonder if he sits at the top of the stairs when we're gone, then returns to his bed when we unlock the door. So, I forgot to check something last time we left the house, so I went back in and heard him scrambling back to his bed. This confirmed that the sneaky bastard only sits on his bed as we're leaving/arriving, pretending to be a good boy. So I shut the door, but stayed in the house this time, completely silent. Within seconds, I heard him creep off of his bed to lay at the top of the stairs. I peered round the corner at him and I've never seen a dog look so terrified and ashamed in all my life. Sneaky fucker. Edited March 17, 2019 by Goafer
