Who here has a Sega Saturn?

Over the last couple of days, for whatever reason, I have been interested in playing Sega's 32-Bit console.. I have never even touched one before, never mind play it :heh:

I am asking everyone what their memories of the system are and what games you would recommend. What is the controller like?

I am interested to see what people think as it is a console noone seems to speak of.. ever :heh:

I still have one in my room, occasionally I go and play it, mostly Sonic 3D, for some reason I never get tired of it.

I had way to many games on it that I played to death.

my favorites being Nights: Into dreams and Christmas Nights.

I think I can recount my Saturn games better when I get home later.

Oh and I just remembered, Fighting Vipers! Man I loved that game.

*nostalgia*

The Saturn was one of the consoles I was fondest of. It specialised in sprites, but was no slouch with polygons either.

The two I most strongly recommend are Guardian Heroes, a scrolling beat-em-up with split paths and levelling-up; and Story of Thor 2, which is like Zelda and very underrated. Both had beautiful sprite-scaling.

I also really liked Bust-a-Move 2, Bubble Bobble Collection (or whatever it was called) and Sega Ages (which had great conversions of OutRun, Space Harrier and Afterburner).

Two good exclusives were Panzer Dragoon Zwei and Panzer Dragoon Saga, the latter an RPG. It featured dragon battles which were similar to the ship battles in Skies of Arcadia. I wouldn't pay silly money for it though, if I were you.

Then there were the great coin-op conversions like Virtua Fighter 1+2, Virtua Cop 1+2, Sega Rally, Street Fighter Alpha 2 and Marvel Super Heroes. I recommend these less because you can now get Virtua Fighter 5 on the current-gen consoles, as well as equivalents of the others.

I had a Sega Saturn as well.

My recommended games are:

Burning Rangers-Made by Sonic team it features some cool music and an anime style opening/cut scenes. It only has 4 levels but each level can be replayed over and over till you rescue everyone. The level paths change as well. As a bonus if you stick the game in your CD drive you get acess to sound bites/and wallpapers.

Fighters Megamix-A Fusion of both Fighting Vipers and Virtual Fighter but with a ton of unlockable players and stages.

If you have a saturn then get yourself Burning Rangers, NiGHTS and Panzer Dragoon Saga; if you can then you will want for nothing more on the system as those are easily the best first party games on it Imo.

Of course there are other awesome titles that deserve more than a mention, such as Deep Fear, Shining Force III and many a great import title such as the great Radiant Silvergun, but for me I got the most enjoyment out of the first aforementioned three as they really respresent what made the console at the time for so many. ^^

Yeah Deep Fear is good as well. (It's another hard one to track down since it was one of the last released European Saturn games) Think Resident Evil under the sea.

Radiant Silvergun is an excellent game as well but it retails at stupid prices.

Guardian Heroes... GUARDIAN HEROES! you must play it!

I always enjoyed Saturn Bomberman, best Bomberman I've played id say. (for the multiplayer that is)

There's a turn based strategy game called... uh... Blazing Heroes, that was pretty good too if your into that sort of thing.

Saturn Bomberman is good, but I'd recommed Bomberman FIGHT! an import Saturn game that offers a 3d style view and massive explosions as well.

Guardian Heroes is excellent as well. It will take you a while to unlock all the playable characters (there's something like 50 or so to unlock) and a ton of branching paths that lead to a slightly different storyline/ending.

I remember owning a Sega Saturn, but I can only remember vague images of some games, just like my memories of the Master System and PlayStation (bar GTA, but only because I played it on PC a while after getting rid of the PlayStation). Which is odd because I had a Mega Drive in between the Master System and Saturn and I can remember a massive amount from it.

I can barely conjure up an image of some stunning looking RPG/Top-down action kind of game that I absolutely sucked at...

I just googled Story of Thor 2. It was definitely that.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who's played it! :)

Do you remember the elemental creatures that followed you around? You obtained an extra one at the end of each dungeon and could then choose which one accompanied you.

The hero had a sword and a bow; I can't remember much else, but the enemies were great. Big armoured knights, that sort of thing. Great sprites.

The series is called "Beyond Oasis" in the USA, so I suppose this is "Beyond Oasis 2". I've never played the Megadrive original.

I can't really remember that much.

I remember it. Played the Orginal on the Megadrive (it fact I rented it from Blockbuster Video, back when you could rent Megadrive games) I never completed it-got as far getting the 4th Elemental sidekick (which was a shadow that could stretch to pull you across gaps and such.

A friend of mine owned one and had nearly all the decent games mentioned above. He also had Shining the Holy Ark which I loved.

We wanted him to get Streetfighter Alpha 2, but he refused to realise its genius. So we ended up buying it for him. Naturally, he ended up loving it too!

  • 5 months later...

I played the Saturn only once at a friend's house in the late 90's, I think that was about a decade after it was released. I had thought about owning one, but at the time I just couldn't afford it due to other upcoming expenses I had at that time in my life like college.

The game I played was Marvel vs. Capcom 2, which remains one of my favorite games today. I may go buy a used Saturn and see what good games I can get for it which are unavailable elsewhere.

Thank you all for the knowledge given about the Saturn here, it inspired me to go search for some games!

My Saturn is the oldest console in my collection (in terms of my first owned, I have older consoles).

Something to bear in mind, the internal memory runs on a battery. Buy a memory cartridge thing, although I hear that runs on a battery as well. I may be wrong on that though, mine doesn't seem to have a battery slot or anything.

Games wise I recommend:

Sega Rally

Daytona USA

Panzer Dragoon Saga (Very expensive, £100+)

Burning Rangers

Nights/Christmas Nights

Die Hard Arcade

Virtual On

Virtual Cop 1 and 2

I'll sell you one if you want it, dunno what games it has with it but got it from a mate and its just kicking around in the attic, should probably make sure it works first though...

Edit: Just realised this was started back in September, never mind!

There's your checklist.. and I expect the report on my desk at 9am : peace:

Oh Saturn how I love thee...

Best console of its generation in my opinion although I have a funny feeling that those playing its bounty of games now may reel back in horror at its admittedly blocky 3D graphics but at the time, oh my it was a beautiful console with amazing games to match.
