Zechs Merquise Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 Yeah, it's a great feeling. Sadly, I have no one to tell that to, because I don't know anybody who has the console! lol. I think there's a few over on gamefaqs.com - those boards are CRAZY with trolling and flaming! I just sit back and enjoy watching, but am not a member.

Hero-of-Time Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 Nintendo sales stronger than ever in Europe. 15th January 2009. Continued strong demand for Wii and Nintendo DS in 2008 has resulted in record sales for both consoles in Europe. Sales of Wii continued on their upward trajectory – with over 8.3 million units sold in 2008 alone, a 58% increase on 2007 and the largest annual sales of home consoles in European gaming history. These sales take the total installed base of Wii in Europe to more than 14.2 million. In its third year on the market, Nintendo DS continues to break all previous sales records. In 2008 over 11.2 million Nintendo DS consoles were sold – which is the largest ever annual sales of a gaming console in European history. This takes the total number of Nintendo DS consoles now sold to European consumers to over 31 million. “The sales trend on both Wii and Nintendo DS, hardware and software during 2008 shows that more and more people in Europe are enjoying video games as part of their daily lives. This proves that Nintendo’s wish to expand the gaming population has strong potential in Europe,†said Laurent Fischer, Managing Director, Marketing & PR, Nintendo of Europe.

Animal Crossing: City Folk - Wii – Nintendo – 497K* * Includes Collector's, Limited, Legendary, and Bundled Editions GameDaily BIZ has received the NPD video game sales data for December and the 2008 calendar year. As most were expecting, 2008 was indeed another record shattering year for the U.S. video game industry. Total sales in December were up nine percent to $5.29 billion, which drove full-year sales to $21.33 billion (up 19 percent from 2007). Video game hardware was up just two percent in December, totaling $1.88 billion, bringing total 2008 hardware sales to $7.81 billion (up 11 percent). Software sales drove December, climbing 15 percent to $2.75 billion, ultimately bringing total software sales for the year to $10.96 billion (a sizable 26 percent jump from '07). Accessories also grew eight percent in December to $662 million, finishing up 14 percent for the year at $2.57 billion. There can be no doubt that Nintendo was the driving force in 2008, both from a hardware and software perspective. In December, the Wii sold 2.15 million additional units and the DS sold a whopping 3.04 million units. Microsoft's Xbox 360 had a respectable showing with 1.44 million sold. Sony's PSP also fared decently with 1.02 million units sold. Finally, the PS3 trailed with just 726K units sold and the PS2 was at the bottom with 410K. Nintendo's Wii Play was the top selling game of December and all of 2008. This comes as little surprise considering that it's been in the top 10 every month and provides new Wii owners with an additional Wii Remote. For the full year, Wii games occupied the top four slots. The only game that even came close to Nintendo's sales level was GTA IV, which finished 2008 with 3.29 million sold on Xbox 360 and 1.89 million on PS3. Below you will find the top selling games of 2008, both ranked by units. Top 10 Games of Calendar Year 2008 1. Wii Play w/ remote - Wii – Nintendo – 5.28 million 2. Mario Kart Wii w/ wheel – Wii – Nintendo – 5.00 million 3. Wii Fit w/ balance board – Wii – Nintendo – 4.53 million 4. Super Smash Bros. Brawl - Wii – Nintendo – 4.17 million 5. What stood out to you? Frazier: I think the fourth quarter is the most interesting to me. As the economy melted down, people kept buying games. Yes, the growth in the fourth quarter might not have been as big as earlier in the year, but the industry still performed very strongly. BIZ: Looking at the December holiday sales performance, what do you think the industry did right that it can perhaps apply to other non-holiday months as 2009 ramps up? Frazier: One of the things I really liked about this year had nothing to do with the holidays. Some of the games you see on the top 10 list were introduced to market much earlier in the year and I think that is something that can help fuel the industry. Get some high profile releases out in the first and second quarters. BIZ: I realize you can't make predictions, but how do you feel the industry will do in '09 coming off this stellar performance? Frazier: I think the industry is poised for continued growth, albeit at a more modest pace than what we saw the last two years. The install base when you combine all current platform systems is at an all-time high, so presumably those folks will want some new content to play on their systems. The challenge for the industry is to capitalize on this and keep pushing the creativity and innovation on the content side. Of course, if there are price reductions on hardware, that will go a long way toward fueling the entire system as well. BIZ: The top four games in '08 were all for Wii, and they were all from Nintendo. Do you think this underscores the difficulties third parties may have on Wii? Frazier: Given how successful the Wii platform has been, for the broader industry to be able to continue to grow, it's a key platform for the third-party publishers to figure out how to be successful on it. Guitar Hero and Rock Band have been notable third-party successes on the Wii platform and there are others. I think we'll see more third party games succeed at retail for this platform. BIZ: Speaking of music games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band, where did those games finish in 2008? They were not in the top 10 for the year... is this a sign of slowdown for the music game genre? Frazier: Keep in mind the top 10 list is at the platform level - at the title level (combining all SKUs and platforms) they did very well. In fact, the two properties had their best month ever in terms of sales so I don't think there is a slowdown at all.
Shino Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 I was looking for this thread! Go my Wii, power on! And how awesome is it to see that Brawl managed to beat GTA4? Time for Dedede dance!
killer kirby Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 Holy shit....Mario Kart power, the DS version is still in the top 10. Shino wins this thread for the fact that he put King Dedede's main theme on this thread
dazzybee Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 I remember a thread debating whether games like Smash and Mario Kart could beat our GTA4 with most people saying no chance and some people saying over the course of the consoles lifespan yeah. But it's happening quicker than that!! Insane sales!

Goron_3 Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 You have to remember the amount of parents/females buying Wii's though when you looked at MK sales figures. Yes they are amazing but I bet you for a large number of Wii owners, Mario Kart will be the only game they buy apart from possibly Wii fit. But yeah, insane sales. Great sales from 360 too and it's nice to see GH on Wii up there. How the PSP sold that much though is beyond me.

Well, yeah, but the Wii has the top selling 4 titles - so it's not like it's up there on it's own!
Goron_3 Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 Well, yeah, but the Wii has the top selling 4 titles - so it's not like it's up there on it's own! Actually I think GTA IV has outsold MK (combining sales obv). And are you counting wii play in that list? Interesting fact. The amount of money software generated in December 08 ALONE is more than the money it generated in 1998 throughout the WHOLE year. Mental.
mcj metroid Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 Yeah, I never thought Mario Kart would own so many other titles - it's even smashed Halo 3! not sure sure if it smashed gta4 but when you consider that it's on 2 different consoles. I believe at the time I said Over the course of the lifespan it would eventually outsell these games.. and I think the argument was between halo 3 and smash bros brawl.. most people thought we were mad... silly ha
jammy2211 Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 It was Halo 3 and Super Mario Galaxy. And er, it's hard to tell who'll win out. Probs SMG as the new Halo thingy will kill Halo 3 sales.

Cube Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 Halo ODST. Halo OSTD is just an expansion pack, so it won't have much impact.
jammy2211 Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 Halo OSTD is just an expansion pack, so it won't have much impact. It's a full retail release, no one's going to buy Halo 3 (first hand) once the 'expansion pack' is out.

The amount of money software generated in December 08 ALONE is more than the money it generated in 1998 throughout the WHOLE year. Mental. Actually I think MK Wii has outsold the combined sales of GTAIV*. If VGCharts is to go buy, GTAIV will have a total of about 12mil against MK's 14 mil in all time sales. *Doesn't include PC sales but I don't think that it will have over 2 mil.
Jamba Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 people not talking about the sales. It's ok man.... You post quite a lot of info and it is only sales figures. It kinda gets tiring going "Yay! Nintendo aren't at the bottom of the pile anymore!"

Goron_3 Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 It's a full retail release, no one's going to buy Halo 3 (first hand) once the 'expansion pack' is out. It's pretty much a slight expansion of the single player game. Besides, Halo 3 sales are pretty low atm, if anything ODST will help sales of it. I mean, since gears 2 has been out i know a few people who've gone out and got the original.

But according to independent sales data released today by the NPD Group, the Wii™ console from Nintendo did just that, even during these economic times, with 2008 unit sales of 10.17 million. The Nintendo DS™ portable handheld system came in a close second, with 2008 unit sales of 9.95 million. Each of them broke the previous yearly unit sales record set in 2007 by Nintendo DS with sales of 8.52 million. Consequently, Wii represented 55% of all next generation home console sales in 2008, while Nintendo DS claimed 72% of all portable system sales in 2008. “Our type of entertainment has now moved to the point where there is no longer a question that if you offer consumers an expanded definition of what a video game can be, and deliver that idea with quality and affordability in mind, millions of new people will start playing video games,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Concepts like Wii Fit, Guitar Hero, and Rock Band never would have seemed feasible just a few years ago, and now they’re driving growth for our the entire industry.” NPD data released for December and all of 2008 also included the following: * The industry’s top 4 selling games of 2008 were: Wii Play™ at No. 1, Mario Kart™ Wii at No. 2, Wii Fit™ at No.3, and Super Smash Brothers™ Brawl, at No. 4. * Industry annual revenues jumped 19% in 2008 over 2007, and Nintendo products were responsible for 99% of those additional retail dollars. * Nintendo DS set another industry record for system sales in any month, with 3.04 million units sold in December. * Wii broke its own monthly record, set in December 2007, by selling 2.14 million units last month. * In December, Nintendo titles filled 20 of the top 30 spots on the best-seller list. Six games made for Nintendo systems placed in the top 10, including Wii Music™ for Wii (No. 9), which has now sold 865,000 units following its launch in October 2008, and Mario Kart DS for the Nintendo DS (No. 7), which has sold a total of 4.3 million units 38 months after launch. * Activision’s Guitar Hero® III: Legends of Rock and Guitar Hero® World Tour, and MTV Games/EA’s* Rock Band Special Edition Bundle all sold more units on Nintendo platforms than any other platforms in 2008. * More 3rd party units were sold for Wii than any other home consoles in December for the 2nd consecutive month. * For the year, more than 132 million games were sold in America for play on Nintendo systems. IGN: Wii controlled five of the Top 10 slots for the month. Wii Play (which includes a controller) continued its reign at the top. More interestingly is the shelf life of Wii Fit, a $90 game that released last May and still sold almost a million copies in December. Also of note, Guitar Hero World Tour apparently sold 850,000 copies in December, just for Wii. It's clear that the franchise officially performs best on Nintendo's system. Perhaps most shocking of all are the best-sellers of the year. According to NPD data, Nintendo owned the top four slots in 2008 with Wii Play (5.2 million), Mario Kart Wii (5.0 million), Wii Fit (4.53 million) and Super Smash Bros. Brawl (4.17 million). These titles outsold Grand Theft Auto IV Xbox 360 (3.29 million), Call of Duty 4: World at War 360 (2.75 million), Gears of War 2 (2.31 million), Grand Theft Auto IV PS3 (1.89 million), Madden NFL 09 360 (1.87 million) and finally, Mario Kart DS (1.65 million). By the way, Nintendo also sold 865,000 copies of Wii Music in 2008, we're sorry to report. IGN: Consumers Prefer Gimped Rock Band The Wii and PlayStation 2 versions of Rock Band (released in June 2008 and December 2007, respectively) were mere shadows of their former Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 selves. Most of the key features had been gutted, there was no online play or downloadable content, no character creation, and they weren't too easy on the eyes. The masses didn't seem to mind, though, as the Wii and PS2 versions of the original game outsold both Rock Band and Rock Band 2 on the other systems last year. According to data from the NPD group, the Wii version of Rock Band was the franchise's best-selling SKU last year with over a million units sold. The PlayStation 2 version was right behind it. Rock Band Wii and PS2 were the 29th and 31st best-selling games of the year, respectively. The original Xbox 360 Rock Band came in at just under 800,000 units. Rock Band 2 on 360, available since September, sold just under 600,000 units. The NPD data isn't clear which SKUs are Special Editions and which are the game only. Rock Band 2 on Wii was released right at the tail end of the year and moved just over 150,000 units.
