Mikey Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Someone I know goes to a Uni, and they block all sites which contain porn. This really fucks me off, as they are telling him what he can and can't view!! Do you think this is right?
nightwolf Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Yes and no Yes because they provide the halls and pay to keep them run No because you pay a ridiculous amount to be at uni.
Mikey Posted February 22, 2008 Author Posted February 22, 2008 What annoys me, is that it's probably a bunch of butch lesbian feminists who are behind this. The guy pays for his Uni connection, so why the hell are they telling people what they can and can't view? I guess if the Uni is privately owned, then it's the Uni's call, but it's really fucking annoying. I also heard a while ago from other people, that some Uni's ban websites which contain no porn, but are controversal because of the opinion's they have. Not sure if this is true, but if it, it's sickening censorship!!
Dan_Dare Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 how about: 'it's a fucking academic network, privately owned, run and maintained by the university for the purpose of work and research.' seems good enough reason for me.
danny Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Shock. Get a job then and get your own place with your own internet stop fucking complaining

How stereotypical, not all women refuse to watch porn I'll have to go to private halls if I go to uni in manchester, personally I'd just find a way around it haha good answer dan!
Mikey Posted February 22, 2008 Author Posted February 22, 2008 Shock. Get a job then and get your own place with your own internet stop fucking complaining This is his own internet, he pays for it. If all ISP's decided to block all porn, would you tell someone to start their own ISP so they could look at internet porn? How stereotypical, not all women refuse to watch porn I'll have to go to private halls if I go to uni in manchester, personally I'd just find a way around it haha good answer dan! I said feminists, not women...
nightwolf Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 you said butch lesbians, last time I checked they were still women.
Mikey Posted February 22, 2008 Author Posted February 22, 2008 Butch lesbian feminists. The type who go around claiming that 1 in 4 women are raped, despite it being debunked as a lie, or that all sex is rape...
Deathjam Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 This is his own internet, he pays for it. If all ISP's decided to block all porn, would you tell sopmeone to start their own ISP so they could look at internet porn? I said feminists, not women... LOL this would never happen as porn searches account for so much of most men's time on the net
Aimless Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 I wouldn't say it's 'right' per se, but I would say it's the University's right to censor what they wish; their campus, their rules. If people want to look at porn in the privacy of their own residence then that's fine by me. However, I can see why an institution would filter out such things as it means they won't have to see that kind of content displayed on public computers, or have issue with people downloading illegal or grey area material — the same thing is true of Torrents. Part of living in a society or being part of a community is giving up certain freedoms. For instance, if you act like a dick on these forums then you run the risk of getting banned. Now, you should be able to contest or question these restrictions, but as an individual you cannot always have your way and should make sure the causes you back are considered — it's all about compromise. Besides, it's only porn.
Dan_Dare Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 if you're in halls, it's the same network as if you're in a computer lab. is it obvious yet?
triforcemario Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 If you're so deperate to watch some porn or go on "controversial" sites, use a proxy like Spysurfing or one of the millions of "Myspace" proxies out there.
Raining_again Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 I don't understand the issue here? Its a "public" internet connection.... :/
Slaggis Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 if you're in halls, it's the same network as if you're in a computer lab. is it obvious yet? Exactly. Stop complaining. When you get your own place you can do what you want, until then use your imagination.
McMad Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 This is why you save porn. onlynecessaryifyoucan'tlivewithoutit
Dyson Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Shock. Get a job then and get your own place with your own internet stop fucking complaining Fuck right off.
M-PG71C Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 how about: 'it's a fucking academic network, privately owned, run and maintained by the university for the purpose of work and research.' seems good enough reason for me. Sounds about right for me as well. The university owns the connection and are able to do with it as they please. Where I am, porn is also blocked and if you download music/movies illegally, your ass is kicked out for theft. The plus side of it is that you don't pay for the connection, it is free for all students to access. I don't see the big deal behind it though, it is private property and it is up to the owners to do as they please with it. If you are paying for it, you agreed to whatever terms of service they have and if that is part of the agreement and you signed your name on it, then you have to abide to it. Your friend paid and agreed to its TOS, if he didn't read the contract, then he has to deal with it. That's how business rolls.
pedrocasilva Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Just stuff your hard drive, then their only way out is censoring you.
EchoDesiato Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Porn is for people who are to lazy to use their imagination. That said, I watch porn too occasionally. But I find that most porn is crap. I'd do what Pedrocasilva suggested.
pedrocasilva Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Make your own porn.I'd say he probably already does: ...a one man show >_>
Guest bluey Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 how about: 'it's a fucking academic network, privately owned, run and maintained by the university for the purpose of work and research.' seems good enough reason for me. *clap....clap.....clap.....* not much to add to that. tell "your friend" (heh-heh-heh) to go BUY some porn of get off the computer, go out and get laid instead of moaning to "his friends" about not being able to download porn... seriously is that what guys talk about? "i cant get any porn online! it's an outrage." in fact - tell him to bring it up at the next student union meet - and ask him to time how long it takes for him to get GLARED off the stage... *blink blink*

The "Your friend" bit made me laugh, I hadn't thought about how obvious it was.
