Somewhere buried in the options blade, it gives you the choice for backround downloading, where the 360 will finish any downloads when you turn it off. Stays on in a kind of "hibernate" mode until they are done and then turns itself off properly.

Known Problem. I'd got it a lot. No real fix, they were suppose to patch it. Quit, start again. Or re-download the beta from download history in account settings on the Marketplace Blade.
