Strange Cookie Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 Perhaps a pointless thread, but I was looking for a thread like this before I got my Wii. Now It's here, I thought I'd post my impressions. I have 27 GC-games. Yesterday, I loaded up Luigi's Mansion, Star Wars: Rogue Leader, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, Zelda: Collector's Edition, Zelda: Wind waker and Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door just to see if the Wii can cope. I'm happy to report they all worked like a charm! The game in 4:3 are displayed as stretched widescreen, but if you don't fancy chubby blokes, just adjust your television settings. For the record, my set is a Samsung HD-LCD. The Wii is connected to the set with a RGB-Scart. When I get my hands on a component cable, it shouldn't be that much of a difference. GC-games are displayed 480i, even with component cables and Wii-setting set to 480p. Anyway, they look spectacular. The games aren't enhanced in any way. That said, the colours are very bright, a lot brighter than on the original Xbox when displayed with the same signal. I haven't encountered any problems so far. I'll give Animal Crossing a spin this evening to see if it recognises the Wii's internal clock. But so far: smooth without a hitch! If anyone encounters any kind of problem with a particular game, please post!
Ren of Heavens Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 What about Phantasy Star Online? Can you play it online? EDIT: And what about LAN games?
Strange Cookie Posted December 15, 2006 Author Posted December 15, 2006 What about Phantasy Star Online? Can you play it online? Hmmm, I don't own PSO, so I can't really say. I doubt you can't because of technical differences, though. And even then, the PSO-servers are shutting down on the 31th March 2007. But maybe someone can check? And what about LAN games? Again, I can't check that, so no idea. Yep, I sure am one big help, ain't I?
blender Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 the wii is a gamecube so no surprise really aout compatibility. I keep asking about LAN too. Mario Karts got Lan maybe someone will try.
martinist Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 when i take a GC game out of my wii the screen goes black and it tells me to replace the disk cover. How can i go back to the wii menu screen without this happening?
Jasper Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 Shut down your console first, like with GameCube itself. You can't return to the Wii because your Wii totally emulates the GameCube, and of course: GameCubes don't go to Wii Channels.
Darth-Marximus Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 I've noticed a slight change to the "jingle" when I start Windwaker in the Wii that is slightly diff to when I started it with my orif GC. Yes - I;ve not completed it yet (bought it quite late on...and saving Twilight Princess till I do! Its sitting there all shiny and new teasing me...
martinist Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 wouldn't it be grate if you unwraped the shrink wrap, opened the box and there was no disk inside
Jasper Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 And what the hell does that reply on, martinist? I don't really get it... Anyway, I've only tried inserting a disc to see how it looks to be sucked in. And I loved it. I find it sad, though, that we don't see wich game is inserted. Come 'on, Nintendo, it's not hard getting the meatedata of the disc. You did it five years ago when you launched the GameCube. Now why not with Wii (but I mean GameCube games, not Wii-games, we all know what happens when I insert a Wii-game)...
Strange Cookie Posted December 15, 2006 Author Posted December 15, 2006 Actually, I eject the GC-disc first (and getting the "close the disc cover"-message, and then shut down or reset my Wii. I prefer it this way, because when you shut down the system while the disc is still rotating, it might cause internal damage or scratch the disc, especially when the Wii is standing vertically. wouldn't it be grate if you unwraped the shrink wrap, opened the box and there was no disk inside Don't laugh, something alike actually happened to me with Red Steel. The shopkeeper was so busy, he forgot to fill the box. Since I was in a hurry, I didn't check it, and when I returned home... Luckily, he had it filled when I went back the other day. Otherwise it would have been a very expensive box indeed. Not to mention one angry costumer. we don't see wich game is inserted It would indeed have been nice, but unless you have serious issues with your short-term-memory, it shouldn't be a problem. Unless you leave your discs in your system ofcourse, which you shouldn't... Naughty, naughty! But I agree it's a shame you can't go to straight to the Wii menu when playing a GC-game. Still, I'm grateful the emulation is hardware-based. No downloadable updates!
Darth-Marximus Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 OK I'll admit it - I have played a bit of Zelda TP (couldn't resist) ut only as far as the orig Gamespot playtest (the vid when they first got their Wii). So basically I've hearded cattle and thats it. So they disc is def there martinist - but yeah that would suck if it wasn't
Jasper Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 Actually, I eject the GC-disc first (and getting the "close the disc cover"-message, and then shut down or reset my Wii. I prefer it this way, because when you shut down the system while the disc is still rotating, it might cause internal damage or scratch the disc, especially when the Wii is standing vertically. Damage? Isn't going to happen. It's just like with your cube: stopping the gamecube before games don't get the disc scratched. By the way, why do you assume there's even anything inside the disc drive that can scratch the disc? It would be stupid if there was a needle, especialy made for those daily cases of shutting down before ejecting... I don't see why people think their discs get scratched by their discreader. Come on guys, there's nothing in there that could scratch your disc. That would just be stupid... The only thing that can scratch (but not with Wii) is your Hard Disk, but Wii uses flash memory. Your hard disc use a needle wich could scratch the plate if you drop it. But most computers have falling sensors wich lock the needle when the computer notices it's fall. So there nothing that can scratch any data INSIDE your computer. If you decide to mate a needle and a disc (and maybe get a Needisc or a neesc or something like that), then that's your problem. Normal people dont.
Strange Cookie Posted December 15, 2006 Author Posted December 15, 2006 Normal people dont. Normal people aren't usually as jumpy too. Anyway, even if there isn't a chance of the disc scratching, it's pointless to shut down the system with a disc still inside, as you can't take the disc out when the system is shut down unlike the Gamecube. You'd have to start the system again to eject the disc. Oh well, it doesn't really matter, I guess. Back to topic: Animal Crossing is working fine and dandy. Yay!
Cube Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 it's pointless to shut down the system with a disc still inside, as you can't take the disc out when the system is shut down unlike the Gamecube. You can eject disks when the Wii is on standby, and it doesn't turn itself on.
Ike Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 What about Phantasy Star Online? Can you play it online? EDIT: And what about LAN games? I tried PSO ep3 and it complained that there was no modem/broadband adapter, so no online won't work. The servers will be shut down April 1st anyway.
Jasper Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 You can eject disks when the Wii is on standby, and it doesn't turn itself on. That's right. Just like the GameCube, the system doesn't pop on when the eject button pops open the disc cover. Yes. Point proven.
Dyson Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 Works fine. Shame that you have to turn the console off at the console itself instead of via the remote though, or at least home button compatibility.
Zell Posted December 16, 2006 Posted December 16, 2006 The wii's backwards compatibility is impressive, it runs perfectly a smash bros disc that only reads half the time on my gcn. It also looks slightly better and has less lag. Well done nintendo.
Jackster Posted December 16, 2006 Posted December 16, 2006 Since the Wii emulates the Gamecube almost exactly when playing Gamecube games, that means there is no: *Home Button *Online Play *LAN Play *Gameboy Player But apart from those, it seems to be perfect from games I've tested, I've even heard that the clock in AC works.
Tphi Posted December 16, 2006 Posted December 16, 2006 Played TimeSplitters2 on my Wii earlier and have to say I thought the loading times were quicker than on the Cube? :S
That Guy Posted December 16, 2006 Posted December 16, 2006 I actually bought Soul Calibur II just to play on my Wii so I'm glad to hear everything is very smooth. Kind of a shame there is no reason for me to keep a Gamecube now, I'll have to stick it in a box now and make some more room.
Teppo Holmqvist Posted December 16, 2006 Posted December 16, 2006 Played TimeSplitters2 on my Wii earlier and have to say I thought the loading times were quicker than on the Cube? :S Yeah, loading times are about half faster. This is simply because Wii has faster DVD-drive and most Cube games loaded data from disc so fast as it was possible. It's also rather interesting that Cube games have better screen quality with Wii's composite cable than my Cube's RGB cables.
Strange Cookie Posted December 16, 2006 Author Posted December 16, 2006 You can eject disks when the Wii is on standby, and it doesn't turn itself on. I see! I didn't know that. Nice! Thanks, Cube! But Jasper, just don't take it so personal, man. This is no contest or anything. You seem kinda... edgy.
Emasher Posted December 16, 2006 Posted December 16, 2006 i never actually played a game but i loaded 2 up to see if they would work. though holding a gc controller feels weird.
Jasper Posted December 16, 2006 Posted December 16, 2006 I see! I didn't know that. Nice! Thanks, Cube! But Jasper, just don't take it so personal, man. This is no contest or anything. You seem kinda... edgy. I'm always annoyed if they come up with these stupid things. Some thinking would help people a lot further. Just give it a two-minute thought and don't say silly things like 'it could harm the disc'. I'm sorry if i sound a bit edgy, but having people saying things without thinking - and meaning it seriously - is somewhat annoying to me. Plus, i've bein inspired by Nintendork. No, that last one was a joke. I'm just realyu annoyed with people asking the questions every time. I've trief putting a Wii-disc in the system the wrong way just to see what would happen. Now what woluld have happened if it got stuck? We'll, we'de have to see it then, but hell, at least take a risk. I'm a bit personal. Don't mess with me. Or something like that. Or even better: think. Think. It's what we all learn to do but never actually do... Sorry if I sounded a bit edgy ;-) (my first smilie! (I hate those goddamn things)). I'm not taking it personal, but next time read the manual instead of using us as instruction manuals...
