Well of course it all comes down to a developer's technical proficiency and the scalability of an engine, but it also shows that it is IS possible to port over even one of the most advanced games of this generation and keep the experience intact with relatively minimal sacrifices (and hell, this port isn't even being done by ID themselves here!). It shows that it's not really the fault of the hardware, but rather it comes down to the developer themselves and the effort/budget that a publisher is willing to put behind the Switch versions of their games. NBA 2017 is also a very impressive port (bugs and egregious microtransactions aside) that runs on the same engine as the PS4/Xbone too and we know that the Switch runs UE4 games very very well (as Snake Pass and other title attest to). As far as I can see it, developers/publishers can make it happen with their games if they really want to. They just need to want to. I'm not the only one who feels this way either; just looking around online, Doom has really shifted the mindset about what the Switch is capable of and I am hoping that other developers/publishers are seeing it the same way.

Great to hear that Bethesda want to support the Switch long-term. Me thinks they're gonna be handsomely rewarded for jumping in early with full support! (I know that they're certainly on my radar now!) Speaking of which... (this is probably the best place to put it for now). Nintendo World Report have a whopping 27 minutes of offscreen footage of Doom running in handheld mode! Looks absolutely stunning! Nice to see the Doom tradition of impossible ports is alive and well! Despite the framerate being cut to 30FPS, it still looks extremely smooth (the copious motion blur helps a lot) and looks extremely impressive! (and this is undocked! It's gonna look even better on the TV!). After seeing this, really, I can't see many excuses for 3rd parties that refuse to support Switch (especially considering that Doom is perhaps the very best looking 60FPS title on consoles right now - it's probably the best litmus test for its capabilities as you're gonna get). It's also a great game too and the arcade mode is a fantastic fit for the pick-up-and-play nature of handheld play. Bethesda/Panic Button/ID deserve all the very best success for what they're doing here!

The press had the chance to play three new levels that were all shown off in the September Nintendo Direct; they've all gone into more detail about what you'll see in each of them, but as someone who also played that demo, I wouldn't say it's tremendously spoilery. One level seems to be the very start of the game, while the others don't seem to be too far into it either (and the time we had to play was fairly limited; not to mention that there's a pretty strict NDA in place too). Truth be told though, the game is every bit as good as you are hoping for, so there's probably no need to read them (My opinion in short? It brings back the athleticism from SM64 and Sunshine, with an expansive moveset and level design that is perhaps best compared to Banjo Kazooie, with parts of it taking a cue from Super Mario 3D World - Motion controls are entirely optional, but add extra nuance to pretty much everything and will be the option of choice for speedrunners. The HD rumble is masterfully executed and is also probably the best use of it outside of 1,2,Switch. The capture mechanic is also stupidly good fun ). @Ronnie What other Switch games did they have to play at EGX anyway? Just out of interest.

Metroid Samus Returns for 3DS (2D Metroid game)
Dcubed replied to Helmsly's topic in Nintendo Gaming
All Metroid games, outside of the Prime games, are short. Hell, they're the games that kicked off the speedrunning community as we know it! -
There is nothing that is motion control only as far as I know. Motion controls give you an advantage with additional nuance to the controls, but it's never required.

Looks really really good. So that's probably running in 720p in docked mode? Very very impressive! Lets just hope for gyro aiming...

Our preview is now up! http://n-europe.com/previews/super-mario-odyssey-preview We also have direct feed capture from these three new kingdoms for you to enjoy! (it's a playlist link, there are 5 videos in all - the last two show off all of the posession capture targets I was able to find in my time playing and some cool secrets and surprises I found ) Also, some bonus gifs I made for fun... Yeah... This game is gonna be amazing!

Oh yeah, I know about that. It just seems an odd choice over Balloon Fight or Pinball to me
-
Oh wow! It even plays his "Directly" catchphrase when you successfully pull it off! The feels
-
That's absolutely crazy! And wonderful! There's a little bit of Iwata inside every Switch... Questionable game choice aside (why not Balloon Fight?, his most famous NES contribution, or Pinball?, the first Nintendo published game he worked on), what a wonderful tribute!

Wow! I just got bumrushed at the end! That was a really weird night for me. First it goes spectacularly, then I start getting haunted and I suddenly can't hit anyone for the life of me Fun as hell though
-
Yeah. Octopath Traveler looks like a solid A-Grade effort. Outside of their gun shy attitude with their biggest titles (FF15, FF7r, Dissidia and KH3) I can't fault their support so far. The Eidos side needs to step up to the plate though.

H-o-T Topic: Has the lack of Virtual Console hurt the Switch?
Dcubed replied to Hero-of-Time's topic in Nintendo Gaming
I suppose we're gonna get an answer to this question soon enough thanks to Hamster... Well, to a certain extent anyway! Either way, I'm bloody chuffed to bits! -
Bethesda have taken the crown! Well done to them! They are putting damn near every Japanese and western 3rd party to absolute shame right now. I am gonna buy the crap out of Doom for Switch! Such a ridiculously perfect fit! Dare I also hope for Gyro controls as well?

Nintendo's arcade games are finally getting a home release... I never thought I'd see the day! Not gonna lie, that overshadowed absolutely everything else for me. That's a BIG deal for me! I'm really shocked that they're letting Hamster release them instead of doing it themselves via the VC service too! (though it does beg the question, will it be Vodka Drunkinsky, or Soda Popinsky?) There's some great stuff in there as well (Doom 2016 and Wolfenstein are big surprises too! Bethesda is now Switch's biggest 3rd party supporter... didn't see that one coming! Doom 2016 on the go will be amazing!), but man! That just crushes them for me! While I'm disappointed at the lack of Platinum stuff being shown, that more than makes it up for me! Some real genuine surprises (New Style Boutique 3, Dillon's Rolling Western 3, Doom, Wolfenstein, Nintendo Arcade Archives, Mario Party Top 100). And Xenoblade looks like it'll make 2017! Great stuff!

Mario has 3D modeled nips... Putting dat next gen POWAH to good use
-
Well I'll be damned! It wasn't pushed back to 2018! Amazing!

Could you imagine the meltdowns? How amazing would it be!?

HOT's list is pretty solid I reckon. I will say that it's possible that we might see Retro's new game, given that it's been 4 years since Tropical Freeze was finished (hell I expected it to have been announced at E3 and released by this November!), but that seems too high profile an announcement to be put out during a September Direct. Ditto on both fronts for Pikmin 4 (remember that it was supposed to have been near completion around a year ago). Both are better fits for E3 next year. The timing suggests a 3rd party focus, given that it's right before TGS, so temper your expectations when it comes to 1st party announcements.
-
You pretty much picked my brain clean there! This list is basically what I am expecting verbatim (I just hope that Bayo 1 & 2 and TW101 all come out before the end of the year. How bloody amazing would it be to have them all on the go!? )
-
I reckon that if they re-launch it alongside Smash Bros with some real killer functionality (sharing replays? Amiibo training? Trophy/Sticker catching?) they might have a chance. But the bad launch will be a tough one to shake off.
-
See, I still don't think it was a bad idea per-say. I'd love to have an app that combines all of their disparate services into one mobile friendly interface (eShop, Splatnet, Mario Kart TV, Mario Maker Bookmark, Pokemon Global Link etc) and I think that's what they're aiming for it to be. But this half baked start is going to do them more harm than good in the long run as they now have to shake off this bad reputation. Especially if they're gonna be charging for it! Well I suppose we'll probably get a better idea about its future tonight when the ND hits and they probably go into detail about the paid service; but they're fighting an uphill battle now.
-
Nice update, still has a long way to go though... I get the feeling that nothing they can do can shake off the reputation it has gained now though. Even if they updated it to have feature parity (and then some) with Discord, they'll never manage to pull people off of it thanks to the app's bad initial reception. They had one chance to impress and they blew it. Why would I use the official app when I can use Discord and when all my friends are using it? (across multiple platforms no less).
