Thanks for your detailed response Columnar. I'm almost certain to be getting this soon. Just as soon as HMV get it back in stock, in fact. I'm a huge fan of the original Tomb Raider as well. Both me and the missus loved it, though I never took to the sequels. They seemed to take away a lot of the atmosphere that the first had in bucketloads. This Wii version looks excellent to me, even though I expect the 360/PC etc to sport better resolutions. That said, I have been reading about frame rate issues with regards the 360 version too. I still think it could be a bit cheaper though. £25-30 would be fairer imho, especially in comparison to the other consoles' versions. We always seem to pay more for Nintendo ports....bah!
-
Yeah I agree. It could do with being a bit cheaper here too. I've read some of the reviews myself too, but if you actually read opinions on forums around the place you'll see many who really like it. In particular, I read a thread over on the Edge forums where someone was full of praise for it. I've seen a few similar all over the place. Like you, even though I have a voucher to spend, I may hang on till it gets a bit cheaper. If I do decide to get it though, I'll pop on here and let you know what I reckon, for what it's worth.

OK, sorry to bump this up, but has anyone here bought this game? I've got a HMV voucher and I really fancy giving this a go, since I used to love the original on my Saturn. I'm not one of those gamers who find the Wii controls abhorrent. I usually find they add something special to a game. Have they added that here? The reviews I'm reading are mixed, but I'm finding that when following people's opinions on forums they are generally positive. The only people I haven't heard anything from are those of you here. Hence the bump. So if you got this, what do you think?

Wow! Any chance you could post up a link to that story or source please Jammy? If ever a game deserved to be absolutely huge it's Mario Galaxy for sure.

Anyone else catch this on today's GamerTV? I have to say, and it upsets me to admit it, that it does look a bit naff in some areas. As a big fan of the original, I know that the on-foot sections when you play as one of the kids are not the main focus of the game, but they really look like Sega have done absolutely nothing to them to bring them a bit more up to date. They really do look almost exactly the same as the 1996 original in terms of player movement, and even the graphics look poor here. Some of the close ups are awful. Though the main crux of the NiGHTS gameplay looks great and fairly intact, it does also look here too as though they decided to add nothing new, just remix the original game. A lot of it looks very much like the original game but with some improved graphics. Hopefully there'll be more to see when I actually get it, so I'm trying not to base too much on a TV review. But - sin of sins - who decided to give NiGHTS a voice? What the...and it's such a whiny annoying voice too. OK I'd heard tell of it, and knew it was on the cards, but I really couldn't believe it when I heard it. Absolutely awful, and also completely unnecessary. The beauty of the original was that it told the story almost silently, allowing the music to do the talking. Which it did wonderfully. I'm still going to buy it, but I think I know deep down that it's going to upset/disappoint me. What were they doing with all that development time??

Already have Mario Galaxy, and I'm getting Zelda for Xmas, so I reckon the next game I'll buy is Tomb Raider Anniversary, with NiGHTS shortly after.

3rd Parties Finding It Difficult Satisfying Casuals.
K-project replied to Hero-of-Time's topic in Nintendo Gaming
Depressing isn't it? Sometimes I think I take games far too seriously, and cannot see the enjoyment that someone may get out of something like Carnival Games. But then I think, well, if I was going to pay good money for a game, wouldn't I want something worth the price, no matter how cheap it is? Something like Carnival Games is basically just a mobile phone game isn't it? I play stuff like that for free all the time on my Linux PC for Gawd's sake. This represents a huge problem for the future of the Wii as a respectable games system. We're already at the point where the only real good stuff is made by Nintendo. -
Yeah I'm still buying this. I doubt a lot of the reviewers on those sites even cared for the original either. It's a classic example of a love it or hate it game. I loved NiGHTS on the Saturn, and I'll be very surprised if they've messed it up on the Wii. So, still on order, and still very much looking forward to it. It's exactly the type of game I bought the Wii for in the first place. Now all we need is Shenmue....
-
Yup. I got my Wii in about August I think, and I was mightily disappointed to find Wii Sports in a card sleeve. I'll buy a spare white DVD case and print off a high quality cover, but that's not the point is it? Yeah I have to say it's a silly thing to drop really.
-
Ditto. I like the look of this, so it's one for my birthday in January methinks.
-
Exactly. So far it sounds to me like much the same game, but with a different approach to the graphics style and some extra multiplayer stuff. If it turns out to be a poor relation of the other versions, with nasty mobile phone type crap tacked on, then I'll be the first moaning about it. But so far I've heard nothing to suggest that.
-
No I like it too, and I'm looking forward to it. At the end of the day, if you don't like the type of graphics the Wii has, why not just pick up a 360? They're cheaper than Wii's at the moment too, because of the Christmas demand. I bought a Wii with no illusion that if multi-format game were to appear on it, then there'd be a compromise in some way graphically. That said, I think this Wii version looks lovely. And why are people calling it kiddie? Have you people not been playing Mario Galaxy, with it's "kiddie" graphics? That's not let you down on gameplay terms has it? At least with this Ghostbusters game too, it sounds like they're still keeping the gameplay intact from the 360 version. What with the type of interaction we've come to expect from the remote I reckon this could be bloody good.

It's kinda funny, I've been listening to the soundtrack for Shenmue 2 today (is that not one of the most beautiful game OST's you've ever heard?) and it's just got me back to thinking about this series. There's such a huge number of Shenmue fansites around the net, and the discussion rages on - I simply cannot believe that this game will not return. If Sega can bring back NiGHTS, then surely there's a place for Shenmue? I don't care what console it turns up on, if Sega put it on the PS3 I'll buy one, simple as. I'd dearly love to see a set including the first two games too, as well as the third. I dunno, I just have this feeling that some news will be forthcoming sooner or later. Eternal optimism I suppose...but I dunno.... "Airing out the books" on the Shenmue 2 OST is just lovely. Sorry I'm rambling.

That's one game I missed out on when I had a Saturn. I'd love to give it a go on the Wii. Do we still know whether NiGHTS on Wii will feature a clock and seasonal changes to the game or not? I'd love for their to be a Christmas NiGHTS in there, along with Autumn and Winter NiGHTS etc etc. I see the weather thing in the interview, but I mean something different.

Can't seem to access the link in the first post. Has the site been removed? EDIT: Ah, it's working now. Like the rest of you I reckon that's a fan made thing.

The swimming is the best ever in a Mario game. This is how I feel now. I was very unsure when I played the first swimmy, watery level. It seemed very difficult to control him consistently, especially after it seemed like they'd pretty much perfected it in SM64. But I've been replaying some of the earlier levels (nostalgia has already kicked in - even though I only have 40-odd stars!) and I love the swimming levels now. I can't explain it properly, but I think he feels more natural and expressive underwater now than he has in the past. You're all going to shout me down now aren't you?

Surprised at the chart entry in the UK. It seems to have sold out absolutely everywhere. Perhaps Nintendo didn't provide enough stock...?
-
This better turn up in the Wii game too! Gah! For ages you had to buy a mangy second-hand Saturn to enjoy this game, now you have to buy a mangy second-hand PS2 to enjoy it. What the hell are Sega playing at? What's next, Shenmue 1 and 2 on the Gameboy Advance? Still, it's lovely to see it's going to get a (somewhat limited) new lease of life. I suppose the PS2 is still widely owned by many. I only hope that they will prove to be interested in this. I might have to pick up another PS2...

Heh, I don't think anything could possibly spoil this game!

/Hiro YATTA! That's excellent! Thanks for that, I've downloaded it and it's great fun. I've currently got the youngest dancing about to the Good Egg Galaxy theme. :D

Good old DVD.co.uk didn't let me down, and it turned up just fine on the day. Managed to squeeze an hours play in before bed last night (I work late, and we get very late post deliveries round here), and I have to say I think I might be in love with games all over again! Amazing. It certainly feels more a 3D successor to Super Mario World than Mario 64 - it's so busy and packed with gameplay. Thanks for turning the good old days into the great new ones Nintendo. I can (almost) forgive your disdain for Europe with this!

Yippee! Mine's finally in dispatch. I don't expect I'll get it for release day tomorrow, but if it comes for Saturday it'll be even sweeter, since the little 'un will be at home and be able to share the excitement. She's only 8, and a huge Mario fan. Can't wait!

What's happened to the usual online retailers and this game? Neither Play.com nor Amazon are showing this as being ready for despatch as they usually would with a pre-order, and typically the site I pre-ordered it from three months ago (DVD.co.uk) STILL isn't processing my order. Play.com won't even allow you to pre-order it now, and they don't have a price for it, which is incredibly unusual for a title with an imminent release. I don't remember such difficulties when, say, Halo 3 came out. Are Nintendo making this purposefully difficult for those of us who like to save a few quid with these retailers, or do we actually think they might be holding back stock for some reason? It's now very seriously looking like I won't get this for the weekend. Something's fishy....

No, it's well out of the way of everything so no chance of knocks or anything. Besides which, it's been kinda funny since day one (I've only had it a few months), but I expected it wouldn't be a long term problem. Then it went away, but now it's back I guess. I'm going to keep it upright for a while and see how things go. It's still doing it, but nowhere near as much as when it was laid flat. I expect it'll be going back after Christmas though. Thanks for your replies people.
