I don't mind it. I went to see The Lives of Others by myself last year. It was the last screening in the city and I was never gonna miss it. the trick is to find someone to talk about the film with after. My parents had already seen it so I was sorted.

actually, that reminds me of a funny story. That picture of me and my brother Simon was taken in France the summer before I started uni. We got home and found a big letter from uni saying I was due for Freshers week in 4 days or something. Barely had time to wash my clothes and pack was awesome my last day in Sheffield though. I was the first to leave and my mate's house party turned in to an impromptu send off

yeah but what you're saying is that in a second cold war era with a major power that national service should be reinstated. I was just pointing out that in a cold war between two major nuclear powers, armies don't mean shit because that 'deterrent' system, handy as it is, wouldn't mean much. You'd be looking at possible and quite likely large scale nuclear war. It's been that way since the end if the second world war.

you're forgetting how powerful H-Bombs are, then. They might be aimed at air bases, nuclear sites and government centres but they'd also destroy everything else, practically as a bi-product. They were also designed explicitly to destroy rural areas in a way the atom bomb never could, so that the military couldn't retreat away from populated areas and retaliate.

American Psycho is amazing. One of the very few occasions in which the film is better than the book it's based on. Largely down to Bale, but also a damn fine script and director at the helm.

the cold war had nothing to do with armies. if that shit had kicked off, most (if not all) of this lovely Island and the rest of Europe would have been a smouldering pile of ash within a couple of hours.
