Looks like a nice machine Much envy here for Corei7! More RAM? What on earth are you planning on doing with this thing?
-
I'm pretty sure my brother uses it with no issues. Will ask him when he's back next weekend.
-
Why are you trying to install them in compatibility mode? Both of those games should be working out of the box. Are they not installing? Or not playing after you install them?
-
I doubt it, TF2's system requirements are pretty low. So low in fact that people have just about managed to get it running on netbooks.
-
For all those of you that haven't got it, Valve have been dropping the price of Team Fortress 2 randomly to £2.49 over this weekend. It's at that price now and will be til 8pm
-
I've got about £80k sitting in the bank. There's nothing to spend it on All the shop weapons are crap... Other than that, loving it. Found an £8k rocket launcher. Couldn't use it for another 10 levels though so it got flogged on but - 1,000 dmg per shot!
-
The boy needs a slap, that's for sure. I'm keeping it though, figure he's saved me a tenner + the price of a Live sub (there's no games I'm that bothered about playing on Live at the moment, not even sure I'll get L4D2 on 360 tbh). I can still play it on the 360 pad through my TV, and if anything the visuals might be better. I've just got to wait for peeps on Steam to get the game now so I can get down to some multiplayer action. Don't fancy doing co-op with a random.
-
Well i just got back from town with my copy. I traded in a bunch of games and picked up Borderlands, Devil May Cry 4, Assassin's Creed (for a 2nd play through before number 2 arrives) and Prince of Persia. Somehow the idiot behind the till has got muddled up and given me the PC version of Borderlands though It's not even out until Friday, so I've no idea how he's made that mistake!
-
Blimey. Got to say, I am tempted by the Black Edition! £59.99 on PC, which is just about bearable. Just need to find out if the PC version is any good and whether or not it works well with the 360 pad (some games don't, Riddick being a prime example). EDIT: Actually, sod that. The cheapest price on PC is £22.99, no way am I putting down an extra £37. It'd have to be one hell of a special edition to make me that stupid.

http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-ATI-Mobility-Radeon-HD-4570.13885.0.html http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-9600M-GS.9450.0.html Try that for a comparison of the graphics cards. Oh, and I'd phone Dell about the 64-bit thing, it's probably a glitch.
-
Ahh, now it makes sense. I didn't see that CPU upgrade at the bottom there, was really struggling to figure out which machine you spec'd! Offers-wise the free shipping, free AV software, £90 discount and 5% off finish tomorrow. If you're happy with the current price then you should order now. In a months time it could be cheaper, but then again you might be kicking yourself because the price has gone up.
-
Which Dell is that? They're doing a good offer on the new Studio 17 at the moment, £599 for the same spec you posted but with a slightly lower spec processor (T6600, 2.2GHz, 800MHz FSB, 2MB Cache). You get free delivery, 15 months of McAfee security centre plus 60 free song downloads and a year's streaming subscription to Napster. There's the option of the 9-Cell battery for an extra £50. I'd seriously consider it, maybe shop around and see how much a spare battery would be first though. With the 6-Cell battery life probably won't be very good, the components you're looking at are fairly power hungry. An hour and a half? Can't see it lasting much longer than that.
-
It's ringing alarm bells in my head, really can't see it being well built at that spec/price. Seems a lot like my first laptop and I've already posted the horrors I went through with that abomination.
-
I'd dismissed this game, but since then I've heard NOTHING but good stuff. Could well be coming home with a copy tomorrow night, need something to get me back online CBA with Halo or CoD anymore, same old boring shit. http://www.ebuyer.com/product/150039 Speed will be more than enough for the Xbox
-
I think so, yes. The performance of a good one is quite a lot better than a mechanical drive The new Crucial ones were around £100 at launch, wish i'd bought one now because they're £140+ now! I was expecting prices to fall (or at least stay stagnant), not rise! Oooh! I'll look in to that! Cheers

You're coming on here and telling us about it. Word of mouth about the helpful bloke in the Apple store, that's what he and Apple get out of it. I do similar things at work all the time, rather than letting a customer walk out the door content you want them to leave happy and chomping at the bit to tell others about their experience.

Nick Griffin to appear on Question Time - 22nd October 2009
McPhee replied to Nicktendo's topic in General Chit Chat
You've completely missed the point there. Ultimately if you track everything back to pre-history then it is assumed that ALL humans come from Africa (because this is where the earliest known human remains were found). Bonnie made the point that there are no Indigenous British people because we ALL come from Africa in the first place. Under this logic there are no indigenous people anywhere EXCEPT Africa. In addition to that, yes, I did learn History at Primary School. However, Primary School teaches bullshit. No surprise there really, the whole education system teaches bullshit, if there's a mistake in the National Curriculum then a whole generation take it as fact and then teach it to the next. On the subject of British ancestry you'll find DNA analysis attests that three quarters of Britons share a common ancestry with the hunter-gatherers who settled in Atlantic Europe during the Paleolithic era. In particular, Britons show a common genetic make-up with the Basque peoples, as high as 90% genetic make-up in Wales and as low as 66% in East Anglia. While there are large periods of foreign cultural influence in Britain these came from either small numbers of invading forces (Romans, Angles, Saxons, Normans, Norse) or small numbers of migrants settling here (Celts) and the blood of these people only contributes a small part of our genetic make-up. The assumptions of genocide and mass re-population came about during the 18th and 19th centuries, a period where we were rather ironically committing genocide and repopulating other parts of the world. The assumptions are based on bad evidence and misinterpretation of sources, rather than actual archaeological and scientific evidence. Maybe you should spend less time reading BBC pages aimed at 4-11 year olds and start reading real books? It'll do you good -
Maybe. I'm not sure if it has the same effect as a clean install or not, but I have done it in the past. Trying to go with the squeaky clean system here though, even the HDD is new and unused (i was hoping for an SSD deal, but they've actually gone up in price ).

Is that the PC demo? Might have to pop in an order Putting out the 360 demo on Modern Warfare 2 launch day seems like a dumb move...

Nick Griffin to appear on Question Time - 22nd October 2009

I'd have to agree with you there. The level of stupidity all around was cringe worthy, especially from the Yank. Using the Romans as an example of a multi-culturally tolerant society??!?! Or how about trying to say that there are no Indigenous Britons because we all come from Africa? Does that mean there are no Indigenous Americans or Aussies? Barroness Warsi just came across like an idiot and I got the odd hint of the closet facist from her too. Nick was flaky, although any time he made any kind of valid point or true statement it seemed like there was a mad rush to try and twist it to make him look dumber than he really is, on this point I felt a little sorry for him. Jack Straw was meh, he suffered from the usual Labour problem of being repeatedly stopped mid-sentence by the Conservative Rep/Audience/Host (I forget his name). To be honest I thought the only one who actually came across well was the guy from the Lib Dems, who I actually assumed was the Conservative representative to start with, he actually had that air of validity that Cameron/Osbourne/Duncan-Smith have about them. -
I didn't know enough about Retail Law at the time to know I could sue them over the whole incident to be honest, if I'd known then I would have. The repairs took so long because the place that repairs the laptops is in Ireland somewhere and it stocks no spare parts. All parts are ordered from Acer in Taiwan(?) on a case-by-case basis. When the idiot tech who's supposed to be repairing the machine can't order the right parts the first time around it leads to a long turnover time. They aim to diagnose within 5 working days, parts take another week to arrive, then they repair within the next 5 working days and aim to have the machine back to you in under three weeks. Leaving the diagnosis til the last day, ordering the wrong parts and then attempting to repair it on the last possible day sadly doubles the turnaround time. I was disgusted at the time, but I ended up just replacing the machine and forgetting about it in the end. I had way more important stuff to worry about at the time, it was near exam time, my Student Loan ran out and I was living off £40 a week with the last term's rent still to pay. I might look in to whether or not I can follow it up now, I've still got the Acer, though I stripped it for parts about 6 months ago so it might take some rebuilding.

After going through a few machines I've learnt my lesson with laptops. DO NOT FOCUS ON PRICE/PERFORMANCE AS THE PRIMARY FACTOR. On desktops it works, on laptops you wind up with a well performing machine with terrible build quality that will fall apart within 6 months of hard use. Acer were the prime example of this a few years ago, their Travelmate chassis was stupidly cheap and had common faults like panels falling off or the chassis snapping at the hinges due to a lack of any support. They sold on the strength of their specs, which were outstanding for the price. I bought one, and in the space of a year it was in repair 3 times for the same fault, totalling 6 months of repair time! I'm not saying avoid Acer though, their Ferrari laptops have always had a good reputation and their Timeline machines are building a similar rep. I'm saying avoid machines that are all about the price/performance. There's so much more to buying a laptop than that. Build quality, size, weight and battery life are equally as important considerations and all of them bump up the price. Personally I'm thinking about the Acer Ferrari One. A little worried about it because of the last Acer machine I had, but reviews warned me build quality was a little shoddy with that machine and I just (foolishly) ignored them. The Ferrari One on the other hand apparently feels very sturdy. Probably not what you're after though, it's more of a Netbook on steroids than a main PC. I'd be looking at machines in the £600-£800 bracket if it was me, this is where portable machines hit reasonable performance and "Desktop Replacement" machines actually live up to their name.

I reinstalled yesterday. Painless. I'm re-ripping my music and DVD collection now, it was getting messy so I figured I'd start again. All my files are on my old HDD, waiting on a caddy to grab what i need. Agreed on the Steam factor, that's going to be a real nightmare. I installed Team Fortress 2 last week and it took about 8 hours to grab the updates for just that single game! Also, the thought of having to tackle the nightmare Empire: Total War install is not making me smile, it took 3 days to get it working last time

Nick Griffin to appear on Question Time - 22nd October 2009
McPhee replied to Nicktendo's topic in General Chit Chat
Maybe they're doing it because they have a TV program to film. They call it "Question Time", not "Jerry Springer". If they film it live and cut it at the hour mark like they normally do it'll end up resembling an episode of the latter rather than the former. I already know why people hate him, it's common knowledge. I'd rather this chance was used to debate more interesting policy issues like how the BNP would tackle Britain's economic problems if they (shudder) ever got in to power. -
Nick Griffin to appear on Question Time - 22nd October 2009
McPhee replied to Nicktendo's topic in General Chit Chat
I don't get these protests about him appearing on Question Time. They want the BNP censored? A political party that represent the views a certain percentage of the British population? Isn't that a lot like telling people what they can and cannot think rather than letting them make their minds up for themselves? Nick Griffin appearing on the show isn't significant. A politician appearing on a political program is not significant. The significant entity is that such a large number of people are so outraged by him that they are willing to throw down the whole concept of freedom of speech and use it as a doormat. Do we really want a society where we can no longer voice our thoughts for fear of someone else taking offence? The protesters sicken me more than the BNP (though I can't say that I agree with their view for the future of Britain either). "I detest what you write, but I would give my life to make it possible for you to continue to write." - Voltaire Yes, it would be. So we'd get a half hour show of people slagging him off, rather than allowing him to speak and getting some idea of actual credible policy out of him. I know I'd rather have a decent political debate on all issues rather than half an hour of people screaming "RAAAAAAACIST!!!!!!!" at him. Question Time is bad enough on a normal week, doing a live show this week would make it about as politically and intellectually relevant as "Big Brother" (though I guess it would then be representative of the people in the audience, i'm expecting twice the number of fuckwits this week ).
