  1. You spelt Alabama wrong
  2. Jeez Flink you can't just tell us about a haircut and not post pictures ffs
  3. My (basic) understanding is that we presume that finding water = possibility of life, right? My other understanding is that the atmosphere protects us from a lot of ionisation-type radiation, which Mars doesn't got. So a) no life on mars because shit be jiggy on a molecular scale or b) somehow life works and we find a cure for cancer and shit. I don't know much though.
  4. @Happenstance great list. Not seen MST3K: The movie - didn't even know it was a thing! (This is) Spintal Tap! would get my vote. alongside maybe Young Frankenstein and Top Secret! (but airplane! is the daddy of spoofs, so that slides). if the 50-year-rule was exempt then a Marx Bros film too (personally loved Duck Soup as a kid but hey). Not many student-oritented ones!
  5. Doing your job forever has got to be a contender for Hell for most people, right?
  6. Basically; I have a vague concept of where I want Future Me to be; a skein of comfort and happiness stemming from a stress-free life doing [x]. But I have no idea how to get from here to there. My current method of coping with life is, essentially, even if I don't know where there is, I know it's not here, so any step is a step in the right direction. Currently my ambition is to have my own place - essentially to try and catch up with my age group a bit! This is achievable and technically I could do it now, and from there I want to try and hold down this job for a year or two (or more!) because I'm looking at my past and worried that I'm not able to settle down for more long periods of time... but still I don't want to force this, and instead be open to the chance of something better coming along. I keep thinking about hare-brained schemes and I'd love to have some sort of fruition from these constant thoughts. I also want to be better at keeping in touch with key friends and family. So nothing major - yeah sure I want to go to New York and Venice and see the northern lights whilst upside-down cake-ing, or whatever. Do you have strong ambitions that drive you? Do you see the future as a fixed point you're moving towards?
  7. That fear when you're about to start a new job or a new role in an existing company is powerful stuff! But think back to the times you've started a new job and gotten past that fear and proven to yourself (and everyone else) that you can do it. You should always seek to move upwards it can look great on a CV and can teach you new skills, pushing yourself. You've done really well sticking with your job for over a year - you must see the kind of staff turnover in these kinds of jobs. Chances are the company wouldn't want to lose you so if the new role really didn't feel right after a couple of months they'd be able to negotiate a repositioning.
  8. I think the "aussie pricing/rounding system" is smarter than you, and it doesn't even HAVE two brain cells!
  9. Just FYI in oz 1 and 2 cents are gone (and they're thinking of getting rid of the 5 cent coin too) but prices are still 99c. They basically have rounding - so you get to the till and things may cost 2 cents more or less as the figure is rounded to the nearest 5.
  10. I don't think it's the same coat, anyway :P
  11. What is your job now? Sounds interesting. Dealing with financial legislation is one of the more 'fun' and interesting parts of my job. I don't know what a PCN is btw - I must've missed that. But yeah - what's the point in having a sign that negates the law if the law overrides the sign? It seems that, as you say, the first thing a warden (is that the PCN?) does is ticket everything they possibly can and let the argument happen later. Most people will not bother contesting simply because they don't know the law so it's an issue of -- much like what I contest with banks and complaints handling in my job -- extortion through ignorance.
  12. @Rummy the use of "must" makes it difficult to argue with - common sense says that the car is parked fine, but thanks to some dickwad a few decades ago anywhere 'london' faces tighter controls than elsewhere in the country. I think that by-law should be more specific or at least looked at because it's grossly unfair to charge people who are parking on grass verges. The 'potential victims' will never be affected by that anyway. In any case this is an argument to be taken up with various government representatives. In regards to coppers being legal tender - the point should be made again. If a company is offering a good or service then they have teh right to refuse your business, thus they have the right to refuse a mountain of coppers if they so choose. if you are legally obliged to make a payment then you usually have to make the payment in the way that is agreeable with the "charger", as it is their debt that is owed and thus they can, to an extent, dictate how it is repayed.
  13. The specific by-law states; Now obviously, based on teh picture, the car isn't parked in a way that truly obstructs the pavement. As a registered blind person I'd be fine navigating that street. In fact, the road I live on has pretty much ALL parked cars obstructing the pavement -- there is no way a pram can get through teh space left. At night coming home I am incredibly inconvenienced by the parking that occurs around here - the law above specifically uses "must not" and "should not" which would have impaired the argument if a council representative was there to fight against your 'driver'. The fact is the word of the law, not the spirit, says that it can't be done in london. If the law said "you cannot park in a way that inconveniences double-buggies" then it'd be a different story. The idea is that the car should inconvenience itself rather than pedestrians - it is a fairly wide road and parking properly on the street wouldn't inconvenience the car, so the question is why wasn't the car parked correctly?
  14. The offering of money is the 'tender', not the offering of a good or service. The 'legality' of the offering of money is at question here, though I see what you are saying. In a shop, for example, they have the right to refuse payment because they owe the customer nothing and promise no guarantee. The law in Australia (which globally tends to just be an unwritten courtesy code) is in place to bring down various other costs that a price tag would not necessarily take into consideration - the extra time and manhours (or minutes) it takes to count, sort and exchange that money plus the space the money takes up add tiny costs here and there. Even the state can have a right to refuse the payment if it inconveniences them.
  15. Don't tell me even more forumers were in brighton
  16. I agree^.
  17. I like to think about how I would've dealt with the above situation. If I was the guy paying the fine, I probably wouldn't have bought a bunch of small change. If I did, I don't think I'd've pushed it all over her keyboard and whatnot. If I was the lady accepting the payment I think I would've stated that I could not confirm his payment until the money was verified and bagged as the correct amount - then proceeded to count very slowly and perhaps make a few mistakes, before calling over a colleague to double-check the count. If I was the security guard I would've had a fucking sense of humour - that dick had absolutely no power whatsoever and probably just fancied the lady. But yeah - the guy should be within his rights to pay the fine with small change, but he is acting without due care for his fellow citizen when he purposefully causes extra hassle. That forces delays to anyone behind him (which, contrary to the earlier situation where the count is made slowly, the emphasis is still on the douche trying to be a douche). This guy wants to be in and out and cause as much hassle as possible -- much like his parking, I presume. Without context for his original offense it is easy to say he's behaving like a twat. It could've been received better, though; all this "we refuse to accept something because we dislike how we have lost control over the situation" is lame.
  18. I'm sure cube or someone will come in and answer your questions about the show itself, but I'll ask you a question instead; are there any other shows you've been recommended but not been bothered to watch yet, for one reason or another - because you think the show doesn't sound good, or whatever? Do yourself a favour and list those shows here then go and watch them!
  19. I expect some (more) awesome game-age next time I'm up north. Perhaps with everyone in turtle costumes. I'll be splinter! My good news for teh day = got my xbox hooked up to my tv so after 9 months of not having my own console I'm back in the game! Goodbye social life! I got a lot of gaming to catch up on.
  20. My headset at work has a detachable mic, detachable cable jack and the headset itself collapses into a carry case. It has noise-cancelling tech and is a beast of a piece of kit!
  21. Accidentally tried to move my £120 headset whilst sat on the wire... ripped some wires out at the USB end. Fairly gutted. Will take it to work and see what the IT dudes think. Also kinda good news/bad news; working tomorrow too :/ basically they've offered overtime for the first time in half a year, so i feel I should take advatage of it and go into the office and sort shit out rather than leave it and end up having to come in unpaid just to stay on top of things. It's good because we wont be taking any calls, we won't really be supervised at all and we can work for as long (or as little) as we want. I may just set the alarm for my usual wake-up time and see how I feel. The money would be very helpful, in any case.
  22. So wait australia have qualified as part of asia, but not as part of oceania?!
  23. My 'good' news is that I won a chess tournament online at chess.com... it's a bit silly but basically when the tournament started I was rated 1340, after an especially bad spell, and the tournament was for 1400s and under so in a way my rating was deflated. But since then I've won something like 30 of my last 35 games and my rating is now 1496.... currently leading in another tournament too, but again that was a <1400 tournament that started when i was 1390, so I do feel kinda bad -- but hey there are now people in this tournament rated 1500 so I'm not the only one! There's close to 100 players in both tournaments so I think i can still say I rock, right? Still not studied any openings (!!) but my endgame is strong and I've just heard that's a good representative of the innate chess skillzor, so I feels goods. ... yeah my hobbie is dull for most.
