That's exactly what I meant. No, they are pretty similar games and Fallout is the second major current gen game Bethesda released, so it's not quite the time difference between the titles you posted. I was going to talk about Oblivion and how that innovates but I can't comment on it too much seeing as I haven't completed it (played it for a few hours at a friends house and it didn't seem too polished). I played Fallout first and it seemed very new, but maybe I should be thanking Oblivion instead. Either way you look at it, they are innovative and push boundaries somewhat.

OK I had forgotten that Oblivion preceeded it, it's not quite as good a game, but take it that Fallout was released without Oblivion existing, it is quite groundbreaking. Having a world with such scale for you to explore without loadtimes (buildings being the exception) with all the characters and perk systems and general abundance of different items, it is groundbreaking. Well first off Resistance and Killzone weren't ever going to be groundbreaking, they aren't regarded as the best games over the last few years. Fallout 3 is groundbreaking, sure it's an FPS/3rd Person job but there hasn't been anything quite like it. Little Big Planet is a massive innovation, creating/sharing/playing levels is very new. You also have the Wii sports, Flower & games that Goafer posted. The thing is you're quick to dumb down any sequel but some of them offer great experiences that you can't get from blocky N64 games, and graphics may be a greater advancement than you'd like to think. As for the Perfect Dark quip, I stand by it. Saying a genre has taken a stand-still because of 1 game that was released ages ago that misses so many features of modern day games is ridiculous. I don't sit there playing Resistance 2 online with 59 players thinking 'why am I doing this? PD was too good that this isn't enjoyable'.

I understand it when people say that playing those revolutionary games for the first time is a great experience, but you're comparing those games which were the cream of the crop in their hay-day with the large quantity of rubbish software out there currently on shelves when you should be comparing them with the big hitters from this gen. There's always the mention of Zelda and Mario in their first 3D forms but really options are being limited from then onwards, it's not like the best developers of today aren't trying to push somewhere new - there's only so much you can change with the same controller - we've recently had some seriously memorable games from consoles that have only been out a few years. There have been stand-out games for every generation and it's easy to look back and remember those few amazing innovators but incredible game experiences are rife whichever era you look at. You can't have much experience with FPS, and even if you are a believer in the genre coming to a standstill (OK its getting a bit worn as years come and go) because of Perfect Dark, well... Laughable really. And believe me I've played pretty much what are called the classics, and I'd rate games from this gen as well or even better experiences than those. There's so many worthy purchases that I'm spoilt for choice, and in multiple genres to may I add. I don't think I've said 'genre' this many times in a 5 hour period.

Adhering to a standard - I don't know what you are expecting, for someone to make a game where you use the face buttons as a camera and the analogues to sing? Copying good ideas is the obvious thing to do because they work efficiently and they work well - for fun times. Then if you shape that idea and put enough uniqueness into it then you get a great product. As for Resistance 2, okay it isn't that remarkable, but the game just ticked my boxes for what I wanted out of an online FPS. And we should make the thread Daft suggested.

You're missing the point, obviously as generations go on improving the graphics doesn't lead to an increase in quality over the last generation, but as far as genres go there has been quite a vast improvement in the standards they set. Goldeneye gave a great indication as to what shooters could be but it has very few features that you'd expect of todays games. Online gaming is such a massive leap, and there are still plenty of new things coming out. Now we're seeing the current systems adopting new periphals to allow for more ideas. There will always be a breakthrough for a genre and the 64 had a few of them, so what? They make for good memories but believe me games are advancing, otherwise you would've lost interest in them altogether. And to that fanboy comment - No

I'm sorry but that's just opinion. N64 era was good but every gen has their fair share of great games. As Aimless said some people need to and start appreciating the higher quality games we are experiencing now. Diddy Kong Racing & Goldeneye were great but I prefer the PS3 for quality and quantity overall.

I'd say this generation is shaping up to be much better, you're getting more value for what the machines can do and games are much more 'believable' in a way, you can almost ignore that the characters aren't just a mass of pixels. The online has re-invented gaming for me really, being able to message and play and swap between them is brilliant. Plus I'm looking at my library and the 'to get' list and I don't think I've ever had to make so many purchases for one console.

I'd like to do a Wipeout tournament, they don't actually take that long. Plus 5 people + for eliminator is much better than 3 or 4. Anyone willing to play Fury tonight. I'll be on from 8 til 10, at which point I'll be catching Charlie Brooker, then I'll be back on.

I played the demo and thought it was shocking, seriously I don't know how it got good reviews. Unless it was just a bad level choice and misrepresentation I can't see how the full thing could be worth spending money on, even if it is a rent. I guess you're a sucker for co-op though.

Man I am not paying £145 just to get a working PS3 back, it's ridiculous - pretty much half the price of a new system on top of the 300 you've already paid. I'll probably use consoledoctor if Sony don't give me a better offer to repair/replace for £100
