  1. Yeah, I don't think it can be considered acceptable
  2. yeah, I planned to come to this but I was flying back from Denmark at the time so it wasn't possible
  3. 4chan is most famous for /b/ which is essentially the asshole of the internet, but it's also where a vast majority of internet trends and events start. Don't even try to make sense of it Also, someone mentioned /b/ is for paedophiles, but actually there are sites that splintered off from 4chan that are far far worse. Yeah, /b/ has a bunch of sick shit at any given time, but it's often for shock value
  4. deadfrog :P
  5. I gave some friends of mine an old Dell GX260 desktop that has a 2.4GHz Pentium 4 and 512MB RAM. It had XP installed on it so they left it with that and just run XBMC. Runs perfectly smooth. Has a Geforce4 MX440 AGP in it. You'll likely being looking at VGA, but remember if a machine has a DVI port, HDMI's video is exactly the same, so you can just use a cheap adapter from DVI to HDMI. Honestly, your best bet for a decently powerful slim machine is just trawling ebay for old corporate desktops. They're reliable and quiet and you can find them on ebay all the time.
  6. It's very, very different from other phones, because you can touch the bare antenna. This gives a clean demonstration of the problem, WITHOUT USING A HAND, so instead of people whining about the way you hold it, you can see WHERE the problem occurs and WHY that could happen with a hand Simply putting something non-conductive over it to stop it shorting out solves the problem. Hence the first official case for an iPhone ever made, making it bulkier, which is kind of counter to the whole design. There's no possible way to dress this up and pretend it's not a big design flaw, or that it's the user's fault, unless you're seriously deluded
  7. You're running a really old version of OS X In my experience, OS X drops out of support quite quickly compared to Windows. You'll probably want to upgrade to Snow Leopard whenever you can. It's pretty cheap. If you can't, and have a PowerPC based machine, then I guess get Leopard, since that's still a big upgrade over Tiger
  8. Why the ever living fuck do people think the iPad is powerful. It's objectively slower to render pages than any Atom netbook, choose whatever benchmark you like. There's nothing special about iPad, it's just a 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 with a mobile PowerVR GPU, and only 256MB RAM. It's PERCEIVED to be fast because it only comes with flash based storage, and has very slick animations, and cannot multitask. The Steve Jobs Reality Distortion Field at its finest
  9. This isn't cool. What happens if I'm anorexic. Do they pay me money to get fat? What if I'm an alcoholic (okay, this one might be true) do they pay me to stop? This isn't their job, and we should stop attempting to subsidise certain lifestyles
  10. No. We shouldn't piss public money away on stuff like this.
  11. Be the superstar whore of /b/ for a while, and fill my holes with the sex toys I already own
  12. Spend the pennies extra to get 4GB, but other than that, that's a nice spec
  13. I don't think you know what literally means to start with
  14. That'll serve you just fine.
  15. I'm always wary of PSUs unless it mentions the brand. You don't really need 600w for a 5770. I run a Core 2 Duo @ 3.4GHz, a Radeon 4890 (I used to run a 2900XT, which uses more power) and 4 hard drives on a Corsair hx520, and even that is slight overkill, I only peak at about 350w~ on the AC side, which, assuming 80% efficiency, is 280w on the DC side (what PSUs are rated at). Obviously you want a bit of headroom and about 60% load is pretty ideal, so 520 is about right (60% being 312w). That said, the AMD CPUs tend to be using a lot more power at idle than Core i series CPUs, and a lot under load too, so that might make up the difference
  16. It's a pain in the ass to find a prebuilt machine with anything but crap graphics, this is where having someone who puts PCs together is useful because it saves you money.. For example, I put together a spec in a few minutes which is probably the best you'll find for the money (from ebuyer): http://vgmcentral.com/images/600quidpc.png I didn't budget for the OS, but if you go to school, you'd be silly not to buy a student discounted copy of Windows 7 http://students.pugh.co.uk/ If you really don't have anyone who could put a machine together, just go ahead and buy a machine from Dell: http://www1.euro.dell.com/uk/en/home/inspiron-560_headless_rec/fs.aspx?refid=inspiron-560_headless_rec&s=dhs&cs=ukdhs1 and maybe see if you can toss a better graphics card in later.
  17. I vaguely expected it because of the rumour. Added some comments in bold (I had this info on Friday, so I've been paying attention to see if there was any truth to it since then). ----- Peter Mandelson has passed a seven point document to Nick Clegg offering the following: 1) STV. (Referendum on STV confirmed, with AV being in place immediately). 2) 500 seat House of Commons. (Not yet confirmed) 3) 75% elected House of Lords. (Mumblings about this) 4) Fixed four year parliaments. (Again, mumblings about this) 5) Brown to resign as Labour leader but stay as PM (not caretaker) until a replacement is elected. (Confirmed, today) 6) Four Lib Dem cabinet seats including Home Secretary and Chief Treasury Secretary. (Not yet confirmed) 7) Joint announcement at 5pm on Monday. (Not fully realised, BUT, Brown did stand down today at this time)
  18. Since I know you're always strapped for cash, here's a way to get a good laptop and make your money go further, in a fairly little known way - Dell Outlet: http://outlet.euro.dell.com/topics/global.aspx/arb/online/en/InventorySearch?c=uk&cs=ukdfh1&l=en&lob=INSP&s=dfh Just sort by price or whatever
  19. Not even that, but on a Mac, if you boot with a card the system doesn't have a kernel extension for, it kernel panics, and it can be a mess if you forget this when you reinstall (so upgrading your video is a shit in comparison to Windows) Windows has to deal with a lot more hardware. Windows is easily the most compatible software platform of any, and not just by a small amount, but by a ridiculous amount
  20. I personally use j river media center because it's by far the best out of the box solution I've found for doing.. almost anything with music (costs money though). It has a ridiculously long feature list
  21. Since you've already changed the card, there's a chance that your psu could be delivering shitty power to the card
  22. I'll probably be there
  23. nvidia cards recently have been a massive issue, they tend to die prematurely (it's to do with the materials used in the bump grid array) so it could be the card. Good luck, though!
  24. holy fucking shit you have a desire No shit you don't regret it, it's easily the best handset available currently I have a magic, you've done yourself a disservice if you haven't rooted it, and loaded the latest cyanogenmod and radio firmware
