I think the stand is a transformer.
-
Everyone slips up from time to time, but if you see in the photo the only connection could be on the 45 degree bit in the corner. From a design point of view it would be awkward to engineer a power supply at that angle, and inefficient use of space. The systems cords will all come out at 90 degrees i think. The stand is just plastic. What it is though is a very very nice piece of plastic.. and will hopefully mean people will customise it just like 360 faceplates. I'll be spray painting mine up.

I have no desire to clutter my relaxation space with the mutterings of the internet inhabitants..

Because the stand is just decorative..? I think this magazine needs to proof read. It is bad design, the Revolution is already very portable.. Miyamoto had it in his jacket pocket at TGS. Taking a bloody stand if anything makes it less portable. Why would it have rubber feet if it wasn't intended to be used without the stand as well?

There aren't any 360s left in Japan, they all got sent back besides. [/becoming a fanboy]

The system can be displayed horizontally or vertically with or without the stand, there are no ports of electronics in the stand, it's merely plastic. The powersupply is a standard power supply you've probably seen on your PSone/two. Figure of 8 design, it will be a cable plugged into that so it can be moved around without the need for the stand. patent. Apology if I've misunderstood you.. but I'm not sure what this magazine is on about.

I've not played monkey ball, I'm sure i'd love it but that is an exception along with broken sword (point and click puzzler). I might try out the DS version..

Scan anyone? anything worth seeing. 4cr updated with a little post about.. looks like it was overrated.
-
Can't see myself playing a puzzle game at home personally.. more of a portable thing.

4cr did a whole podcast on how EA games are generally average games, nothing wrong with them but after you've played it once it loses it's appeal somewhat. BigTac if you don't mind me asking.. if you're talking 'off the record' with this EA executive... why exactly is he hinting to you, like you're a member of the press? I'll never buy an EA game but it would be nice to hear about any EA big titles with the revolution. SSX would be interesting. The fifa playback vibe I get is very novelty, I'm kinda glad I wont be buying any of their titles for Revolution.. good for them though, I expected more progress from them by now with the revolution dev kit by now I guess.

Yeah I didn't think that the sensor could connect to the USB.. I think the console should have a floating LED like in knight rider.. when you bash it around it goes red and shouts at you.

Making the receiever wireless wouldn't be that bad of an idea.. the system is already running wirelessly.. it wouldn't be horrible to have that thing on top running 4 AA batteries (to weigh it down and power it) it could be like a relay thing. We see it in wireless networks where routers hop across each other to make a mesh network.. It could be do-able??
-
Yeah but what if the cat gets in the way.. or someone places a DVD in front of the reciever (it's happened to me with IR stuff) I'm thinking that is unlikely because the revolution box can be displayed in multiple directions. It would be too hard to engineer it.. say it is vertical, how would it have the range to detect such wide movements such as hitting a tennis ball.

*Buzz* LAME! You're.. right.

this appears to be the Sony/Philips standard that Apple uses, which is probably industry standard. it's not quite the same, i've put the question to some audio techies so in a day or two i should be able demystify the audio possibility.

K, I put the story up on digg and learnt a few good things when it made the frontpage. Some really good people commented on it and here's what extra things I learnt. mooseblaster: Well, here's my two cents, based on previous Nintendo consoles: Back: A/C plugin (figure of 8), Digital audio out (small, almost square one), Multi AV port (as seen on the N64 and Gamecube), 2 USB ports. Side panel (with feet): Expansion socket (left hand side, where screw is) Front panel: On/off, reset, eject buttons, cover hiding connectivity. Side panel (without feet): Cover hiding Gamecube sockets, Gamecube memory card sockets. the figure of 8 AC connection means it will have the powersupply unit built into the console. Which is an engineering triump if you ask me.. the Revolution is going to have one of the smallest (stable) footprints in home electronics ever. I'm leaning more towards the idea of the small square port being digital optical audio.. If you consider the price of a home surround sound kit to the price of a HD television.. the surround kit wins. But if you consider the experience you get from these devices, the sound system puts up a good fight. Bang for your buck, Surround sound offers an unrivalled experience and is perhaps the technology Nintendo want to push this generation more than HD. It is immersive, it is 3D, with the controller and a standard definition television the world is yours. Of course the small port could be firewire someone suggested, I doubt it somehow, the chip is large.. the license fee from Apple would be large.. the benefit to consumers on a mass scale would be slim and none. Ethernet? No, they already said that it wont be ethernet. But as another digger pointed out: I remember seeing a unit that attached to the top of the TV, to track controller movements I believe, while you'd expect that thing to be wireless for ease of setup, all the data it'd be transferring you'd think it'd be more practical to have it wired. So maybe that funny jack is the new jack for the movement sensor. perhaps. But with all honesty, thats just a wild guess. Which seems logical too, Nintendo might have that little reciever on the top of the system, and it would make sense to have that wired because it will be transferring a lot of data through the system about the controller in real time. In the publicity shots of the Revolution have we seen the top of the television? could it be cropped to put emphasis on the system away from the nice TV, or is there a reason why? the reciever hadn't been designed at the time of TGS. A few sources have commented that Revolution will support 7.1 surround sound.

I'll put masking tape over any logo resembling that in the final console. And i'm getting a white console.. that's how much i am disgusted.

That's a bodge job

You know in duck hunt.. the system needed a little reciever to be placed on the top of the television to calibrate the controller's shooting action. Perhaps this obscure port is just for that.. the controller can't work from the system itself because it has been designed to work horizontally and vertically.. it would be harder to engineer than simple having a small reciever. I'd say the that's the system port layout.. and I reckon that the DVD dongle goes in the bottom, 4 gamecube ports on the top, 2 gamecube memory cards on top and under the hood at the front.. i'm not saying. I don't think it's SD, aren't the gamecube memory cards enough to take a game profile to a mates house to play multiplayer? wouldn't that compliment the systems 512mb on board enough? Nintendo if they put SD on the system are opening up a world of hacking and internet sharing.. I am skeptical. USB internet connection, camera, future expandability.. no real use at the moment.
-
SD is not a revolution though. the DVD dongle is 100% confirmed as internal, so it should slide into the bottom of the console as we suspected earlier. I really think it's something crazy in there.. it could well be sensors, I think it's something more.. perhaps it's wireless electricity! I don't think we can discredit Spong, they were there.. they say they've touched which means they've spoken with real Nintendo staff and have been given the 'revolution inside there' treatment.
-
`No thanks.

Co-sign, DVD dongle in the bottom.. I hope this thing doesn't cost much and come bundled with a crappy ass remote. Using the revolution controller in a circular motion would be so rad to fast forward and rewind in real time

You know, have you ever listened to music.. in particular rock music. The bass.. it doesn't really do anything, as an instrument most people barely notice it. But without it, you don't notice it.. it's just there because it adds depth to the music. When designing graphics the aim is of course to sell a product.. get a message over.. but if there fading REVOLUTION wasn't there would the advert be as effective.. from a aestehtic point of view.

If anything I'd have thought the multiprocessor approach would be good for Revolution, not that I care.. but it seems like an efficient way of doing things. 3 small french fries are more fatty than 1 big english chip, because of surface area. I know that analogy relates in no way to microprocessors but 'tevs

Good move to place the fan at the back, it's looking elegant. I like that the console has rubber feet both ways, and that the powersupply is located at the bottom of the console when stored horizontally so it wont be top heavy. It's a good design.. at least now we can conclude that the USB ports are placed at the back and that there is something else under the hatch at the front. The connection really baffles me though, we've been told the system will connect to a standard television internationally.. which is why there is one proprietary output which will ship with an international connection for TVs and computer monitors. That port though, very confusing. I'll do a little research later and see.
