  1. What router do you have? And I can't understand what Jordan is trying to say either... maybe he typed too fast?
  2. µtorrent is fairly easy to setup and it shows the port you need to open on options->preferences->connection. And as shorty suggested, click on speed guide and click "test if the port is forwarded properly" button. Do this after you have forwarded the port on the router. Go to the router manufacturer's site to find the manual for the router. It will probably have information on how to enable port forwarding on the router.
  3. Well I hope that this will be the future.
  4. Depends on the motherboard I guess. ASUS uses a green led to warn users not to fiddle around (install upgrades etc.) with the motherboard while the circuits are live. If the power supply is turned off or unplugged the led would be off.
  5. If you have another pc you could try it with the other pc's power supply. They're relatively easy to switch. Usually 4 screws and a bunch of wires. The green led was on the motherboard? That just indicates that the computer is plugged in.
  6. Well I did say that you should wait a bit for dx10 hardware :p But if nvidia says it will be 10-15% better it'll probably just be under specific circumstances. And apparently it doesn't really perform that well for it's price point. It's ~425£(850$) in the states and offers little performance advantage from an overclocked 8800 gtx So it's pretty much a waste of money. But I'm pretty sure that the price will drop when amd launches r600s
  7. That's kind of the whole point, to learn something new. But I guess if he doesn't see computers as a hobby, then he'd be better off doing things the easy way.
  8. Why don't you try something different and install linux on it? Then setup samba for it and you have a working network file server It requires a bit more time, but it might perform better than xp.
  9. Not sure what you mean, the card is bent because of it's own weight. The PATA connector at the end isn't in the way as it's faced towards the front of the case. I've supported the card by hanging the power cord so that it won't allow the end of the card fall too much. Thanks for the tip though. I had a zalman vf 700 on my old graphics card. I will probably switch the stock cooler on the x1900xt to something more quiet in the summer.
  10. Yeah, especially when booting up the machine. And the case I have has some noise reducing material on it's sides. This machine would be pretty silent without that graphics card.
  11. Sorry for the quality, this was taken with my phone and without proper lighting. That XT might get an additional X if the memory on the board is the right kind. I should check that sometime. And couple of things left out: under the zalman, there is an E6300 and to the right of it 2x1Gb memory. I'm pretty amazed that you still have floppy drives
  12. http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/01/29/xp-vs-vista/index.html I know that the argument was meant for mac users but couldn't help myself... If I wanted sleek, I would get a mac. You get a computer that's sleek too that way :p Well I don't really care what you guys use, because it's as pointless as discussing which is better, pizza or pasta. But personally I think that it's a bit too early to move to vista. And then there's this: http://alkyproject.blogspot.com/ if that works I won't be switching to vista anytime soon.
  13. 2Mbit can't be that bad I have 3 and it usually takes around 15-20mins for an episode to download Well doesn't matter much since the episodes are pretty much released while I'm asleep, and when I wake up it's time to watch them. I agree with The Peeps, this was one of the best episodes.
  14. Going from win98 to XP actually made sense. XP was more stable, secure and it was easier to install devices to a pc that ran xp. But if you wanted the few percent performance increase on new games (back then) by using win98 you could use it because it had dx9.0c And the fact is, your 8800 cards would run present games better on xp If vista would have been only an update to the visual appearance and security, I would probably be more willing to get it. Even though I don't think it looks as nice as beryl (which doesn't need 128Mb dx9 GPU btw...) I could have been persuaded to upgrade to newer OS. Two reasons for me not getting it: dx10 and performance. Dx10 because there's no way I'm buying a new graphics card in the next three years. And the general performance just isn't as good as it is on XP. This will probably change for the better in the future, but when? And if you want to be safe when browsing the web, use ie3 with win95 nobody cares really about that system so new spyware and viruses won't work on it And I'm not really worried about spyware or viruses on XP. Never had a problem with those.
  15. http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=39087 I wouldn't call it win me II though... Funnily though the one reason I would get vista is also one of the reasons why I won't be getting it anytime soon (if ever).
  16. On xp the temperature can be found from the driver's control panel. Have you checked there? It's easier to find in 'classic view', if there is such a thing on vista drivers.
  17. Actually I don't remember Jasper starting any fights between mac and windows. Usually he has just said that he likes mac os better than windows. And given explanation why he likes. Not just posting "mac os rulez!" And I don't believe that windows has fanboys... Or at least I don't want to And on topic, voice recognition is nice. I tried it with winxp and it worked quite nicely. I believe I had to download some speech SDK for that from microsoft. Funny, the version 5 doesn't seem to have an app that allows you to use voice commands to control the system.
  18. Warranty still valid?
  19. Yes that's a step to the right direction. But the mac addresses can be spoofed so if someone did crack into the wireless network and knew more than to download a program to crack the wep, he could have checked what mac addresses the other computers that were connected to the router had. WPA + mac filtering should be safe enough. But still I would recommend using cables if possible.
  20. Yes (10 char)
  21. You don't have to erase the files when you re-install windows or linux. It is recommended when you want to install windows properly, but not necessary. You might need a screwdriver and an adapter but usually laptop hard disks can be plugged to another computer Unless macbook's hard disks are somehow different from other laptop hard disks.
  22. I've taken 5 driving exams (3 theory, 2 actually driving) and passed them all the first time. And I'd take another driving test this summer if I somehow would manage to get a more powerful bike. Thanks to EU for those...
  23. On a pc that would be done, for example, by booting up a linux livecd/dvd and copying the files that way. Another way would be to remove the hdd from the macbook (i'm not even sure if this can be done...) and plugging it as an extra drive to another computer. The another computer should be a mac though, as I don't know if there's any program that allows reading/writing of mac's filesystem on windows.
  24. Yeah, apparently it takes about 1 minute to crack wep.
  25. I agree with you mostly, but graphics card manufacturer's do release cards that have plenty of RAM but are not really any better than the version with less RAM. The graphics chip is more important. As for laptops, those that have enough power to run games properly cost more than a more powerful desktop. And they're usually pretty power hungry too so they are not that portable. As for the mac comment, only place I've seen more professionals use macs is in the A/V industry, magazine publishing etc. But they can do this job too so as Jasper said, it's a matter of taste. Or if you would want a pc that is durable, you might want to look at panasonic's toughbooks. They are shock and waterproof so they shouldn't break even if you abuse them. But that might be a bit too much for a laptop that is just needed to do some finance.
