Mario and Sonic at the OG not really good news if it beating SMG,AC,COD4 and Uncharted. :hmm:

Software generates £519m, hardware £405m

The UK games market has seen a massive growth in year-on-year revenues of 42 per cent for the first half of 2007, powered by strong sales of DS, Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360 software.

For the first 26 weeks of 2007, the UK market generated GBP 1.02 billion (EUR 1.5bn) in revenue including hardware, software and accessory sales - compared to 718 million for the same period last year.

Software was responsible for GBP 519 million (EUR 767m) in revenue, with sales of DS titles climbing a staggering 164 per cent to GBP 91 million (EUR 134.4m), compared to 34 million in 2006.

Software for the Xbox 360 was the greatest performer for the first half of the year, generating GBP 101 million (EUR 134m), a rise of 73 per cent, compared to GBP 58 million (EUR 85.7m) last year.

The Nintendo Wii sold GBP 46 million (EUR 68m) worth of software while the PlayStation 3 – which only launched in late March – has already clocked up sales of GBP 37 million (EUR 54m).

Console hardware generated revenues of GBP 405 million (EUR 598.8m), with 45 per cent attributable to Sony, Nintendo securing 39 per cent and Microsoft 17 per cent.

Breaking the hardware figure down further, GBP 101 million (EUR 149.3m) of revenue came from handheld consoles, with Nintendo taking 64 per cent of the market and Sony taking the remaining 36 per cent.

Home consoles accounted for GBP 304 million (EUR 449.5m) of revenue, with Sony generating 47 per cent of the figure, Nintendo 30 per cent and Microsoft 22 per cent. Overall, sales of home consoles shot up by 189 per cent.

Even console accessories saw an impressive climb in sales of 74 per cent to GBP 98 million (EUR 144.9m), compared to GBP 57 million (EUR 84.2m) in 2006.

Ubisoft end 2007 on a high with ‘Assassin’s Creed’ sneaking to the top of the All Formats Chart, reaching No1 on its respective formats (PS3 and Xbox 360) and dropping only 7% in sales, while Activision’s ‘Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare’ slips from No1 to No3 with a 37% decline.

‘FIFA 08’ misses out on No1 by around 1,000 sales, as EA have to make do with only 1 week at the top of the All Formats Chart in the last 11 weeks of the year. ‘The Simpsons Game’ falls one place to No4, while ‘Need for Speed: ProStreet’ holds on to No5 with both EA games falling by similar margins (24% and 23% respectively). The football games ‘FIFA 08’ and ‘Pro Evolution Soccer 2008’ are the only All Formats Top 10 games to increase in sales with the retailer-promoted Xbox 360 version of PES helping Konami’s title back into the Top 10, up from No13 to No6. THQ’s ‘WWE Smackdown Vs Raw 2008’ drops 43% in sales but remains at No7 for a third consecutive week, while Nintendo’s Brain Training sequel falls 2 places to No8 (and the original drops out of the Top 10 to No11, for the first in the past 9 weeks). The original Dr Kawashima has been in the All Formats Top 10 for 34 weeks in 2007 (and an impressive 50 weeks in the All Formats Top 20).

‘Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock’ gives Activision 2 Top 10 All Formats games this week, up from No12 to No9. Sega’s All Formats Top 10 representative is no longer ‘Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games’ which due to lack of stock falls out of the All Formats Top 40 after last week’s No9 placing, and is replaced with ‘The Golden Compass’, up one place to No10.

From ChartTrack

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games’ stages a Herculean comeback, jumping back into the All Formats Top 40 at No1 with renewed stock handing Sega’s Wii title its third All Formats gold medal.

It is the third different title to reach No1 so far this year, selling more than twice as much as the next title on an individual format (Dr. Kawashima’s Brain Training). Activision’s multi-format ‘Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare’ has to settle for a drop of one place to No2 (-19%). Half of the All Formats Top 10 is made up of games that are exclusive to Nintendo formats (DS/Wii), boosted by renewed Wii and in particular DS Lite hardware stock. The last time 5 DS/Wii exclusive games featured in the All Formats Top 10 was in week 38 2007. 85% of sales from the Top 10 Individual Format Chart (Units) are from titles only released on Nintendo formats. The brain training games both benefit, each up 4 places with the original at No4 and the sequel at No5, while ‘Super Mario Galaxy’ breaks into the All Formats Top 10 for only the third time since its launch 10 weeks ago, up from No15 to No8. Every multi-format giant in the All Formats Top 10 loses sales except ‘The Simpsons Game’ which is up one place to No3 (+9%). Ubisoft’s ‘Assassin’s Creed’ slips from No3 to No6, EA’s ‘FIFA 08’ drops from No2 to No7 and Activisions’s ‘Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock’ falls from No5 to No9. Sega’s light gun (Wii Zapper) game ‘Ghost Squad’ is a new entry at No20, just ahead of the official Wii Zapper bundled game ‘Link’s Crossbow Training’ which re-enters the Top 40 at No22. The only other game released this week to debut in the All Formats Top 40 is Capcom’s ‘Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros’ Treasure’ at No17.

Sony’s first PS3 Gran Turismo title is a taster of things to come - ‘Gran Turismo 5: Prologue’ debuts at No1 and is released as a budget title.

This happened before with the launch of ‘GT4: Prologue’ on PS2 in June 2004…10 months later the full product was launched (Gran Turismo 4, March 2005). ‘GT5: Prologue’ becomes the fastest-selling PS3 title within a week (19th overall), beating previous title-holder ‘Resistance: Fall of Man’ (back at the launch of PS3 in week 12, 2007). Ubisoft drop to No2 (-50%) after debuting at No1 last week with ‘Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Vegas 2’ (360/PS3). Sega’s Wii/DS ‘Mario and Sonic’ (-19%) suffers a similar fate, dropping one place to No3. Konami climb 7 places to No4 (+109%) with ‘Pro Evolution Soccer 2008’. The latest version to launch is Wii, claiming just over half of total sales, supplementing a DS version (Feb 08) and a PSP version (early Mar 08) and ‘PES08’ is now available on the same 7 formats as ‘FIFA 08’ which launched in late Sep 07. Activision drop one place to No5 with ‘Guitar Hero III’ (+8%) and Sega climb 4 places to No6 with last week’s other big new entry, ‘Sega Superstars Tennis’ on Wii/DS/360/PS3 (+25%). Also of note this week are new-entries ‘Viking: Battle for Asgard’ from Sega on 360/PS3 at No8 (67% on 360), EA’s ‘Command & Conquer 3: Kane’s Wrath’ (No16), Sega’s ‘House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return’ (No21) and Sony’s PSP ‘God of War: Chains of Olympus’ (No29).

Its a (nice) surprise to see HotD doing so well in the charts, really didn't expect to see that one going in so high, bodes well for the future of that genre on Wii. Pro Evo is surprising, I haven't played the game yet, it doesn't really appeal to me and I'm not sure it does to the majority of Wii owners either. It'll be interesting to see how it goes over the next few weeks.

I don't think SEGA Tennis would have sold many more at all on the Wii with online play involved, the versions with online play have completely bombed and in general its not something that sways Wii owners. I think its doing just about all it could have.

Sony’s ‘Gran Turismo 5: Prologue’ races to a second week at No1 in the All Formats Chart despite a 40% drop in sales. This week Sony’s title accounts for 39% of all PS3 sales, but only 28% of all PS3 software revenue.

The Olympic flame is still burning strongly for Sega’s ‘Mario and Sonic’, up one place to No2, while Ubisoft’s ‘Rainbow Six: Vegas 2’ is on a losing streak with sales falling for a second week, down 43%. The Wii version of ‘Pro Evolution Soccer 2008’ scores a strong second week with sales of the first version of a PES game in the UK on a Nintendo home console up 34%, helping Konami hold on to No4 in the All Formats Top 40. Sega have the largest number of Top 10 All Formats titles this week with 3 - ‘Mario & Sonic’ joined by newcomer ‘Condemned 2’ on Xbox 360 (67%) and PS3 (33%) at No5 and ‘Viking: Battle for Asgard’, up from No9 to No7. Sega’s presence continues into the Top 20 with ‘Sega Superstars Tennis’ at No12 and ‘The House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return’ at No17 while there is no room for EA in the All Formats Top 10 with ‘FIFA 08’ now their top selling game at No14. Nintendo manage to gain a foothold in the All Formats Top 10 as both ‘Wii Play’ and ‘Brain Training’ bounce back into the Top 10 at No’s 8 and 9 respectively. The only other new entry this week is ‘Dark Sector’ from D3P, debuting at No11 (No6 in the PS3 Chart and No4 on Xbox 360).

Whoa, Pro Evo is holding strong at the top end of the charts still! Good stuff. I saw the advert for it earlier with Wrighty v Owen and Jon Champion giving a quick run down of the controls. I hope it continues to sell because don't we always think that means the devs will take notice and give us the next installment, Pro Evo 09...

Nintendo overtakes Sony’s ‘Gran Turismo 5: Prologue’ at the top of the All Formats Chart as ‘Mario Kart Wii’ records the 8th biggest launch week ever in the UK. ‘Mario Kart Wii’ is far and away the biggest launch of any Nintendo published title. It’s also bigger than the launch weeks of all 5 other Mario Wii games combined (Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games, Super Mario Galaxy, Mario Strikers, Mario Party 8 and Super Paper Mario).

Mario has performed heroically on Nintendo’s next-gen format with Wii games featuring Mario accounting for 21.2% of all Wii units since the launch of the console in December 2006. There are now 4 Mario games in the All Formats Top 40 with Sega’s ‘Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games’ down one place to No3 (behind ‘Gran Turismo 5: Prologue), ‘New Super Mario Bros’ at No23 and ‘Mario Kart DS’ an All Formats Top 40 re-entry at No30. ‘Pro Evolution Soccer 2008’, another strong performer on Nintendo Wii, is a non-mover at No4, while Ubisoft’s ‘Rainbow Six: Vegas 2’ continues to lose ground, down 2 places to No5.

Sales of ‘Condemned 2’ from Sega fall by 20% in its second week, down from No5 to No6, while Activision still have an All Formats Top 10 presence thanks to ‘Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock’ only falling 2 places to No8 and ‘Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare’ climbing one place to No9. The new DS and PC versions of Ubisoft’s ‘Assassin’s Creed’ help it sneak back up the chart, up from No27 to No15, but otherwise there are no All Format Top 40 new entries this week to compete with the blockbuster ‘Mario Kart Wii’.

Nintendo manage to avoid any banana skins with ‘Mario Kart Wii’ sitting pretty at the top of the All Formats Chart, only dropping 22% in sales in its second week.

The All Formats Top 5 consists of games by 4 different Japanese publishers (Nintendo, Sega, Sony and Konami) and with the exception of ‘Gran Turismo 5: Prologue’, down one place to No3, they are all selling the strongest on Nintendo Wii. Nintendo’s format is due to get a further boost next week with the release of ‘Wii Fit’, but in the meantime it is EA who have the highest new entries thanks to the multi-format ‘UEFA Euro 2008 Austria-Switzerland’ debuting at No8 and ‘The Sims 2: Kitchen & Bath Interior Design Stuff’ on PC at No20.

There are six games in the All Formats Top 30 that feature either Mario or Sonic and the duo’s Olympic Games title is still performing well, swapping places with GT5, up from No3 to No2. Konami’s ‘Pro Evolution Soccer 2008’ holds on to No4 for a 4th consecutive week despite pressure from retailer-promoted ‘Sega Superstars Tennis’ which rises 6 places up the rankings to No5. Retailer Wii hardware bundles help boost ‘Rayman Raving Rabbids 2’ back up the chart, this week’s highest climber up from No32 to No22.

The only other Top 40 new entry is the first gun-game for PS3, Sony/Namco’s ‘Time Crisis 4’, shooting its way in at No24.

gameindustry.biz: The UK videogames industry has recorded an all time high for first quarter software sales, with retailers selling 17.89 million units and earning GBP 418.4 million.

The figures, provided by analysts Chart-Track, show an increase of nearly a third on the results from December 30 to March 29 last year, when 15.62 million units were sold and GBP 317 million earned.

"We are thrilled to see the industry continue to grow at such a rapid rate and videogame sales continuing to rise," said Paul Jackson, director general of ELSPA.

The figures also revealed that Nintendo benefitted the most from the sales by securing 37 per cent of all units sold. This was helped by Sega's DS and Wii title Mario & Sonic at the Olympics, which sold the most units over the period.

"This period has seen more innovative and family-friendly titles doing well and it is clear that consumers of all ages have been lining up to buy them," Jackson added.

Chart-Track's findings come after those of North America's NPD group, which show that Nintendo sold the most Wii consoles ever this March, outside of the holiday months of November and December, selling 720,000 units.

Wii Fit’ flexes its muscles at the top of the All Formats chart this week, giving Nintendo a very healthy complexion thanks to the 6th fastest selling UK debut ever (only bettered by GTA, Halo and Gran Turismo titles).

The fitness game was launched on Friday, bundled with a balance board accessory at a price of £69.99 and was bought by roughly 1 in 10 Wii console owners over its first 2 days of release. ‘Wii Fit’ recorded an estimated £16.3m making it the 3rd largest launch in terms of value for a video gaming product, behind ‘Gran Theft Auto: San Andreas’ (£24.2m in week 44 2004) and ‘Halo 3’ (£16.9m in week 39 2007).

Nintendo has now eclipsed the record-breaking launch only two weeks ago of ‘Mario Kart Wii’ with ‘Wii Fit’ replacing it as the Japanese giant’s fastest selling title in the UK. Sales of ‘Mario Kart Wii’ slow dramatically this week, slipping by 62%, but the popular racer only drops to No2 while Sega’s ‘Mario & Sonic’ also makes way, down from No2 to No3. Half of all Wii software sold this week was ‘Wii Fit’ sales, while 79% was published by either Nintendo or Sega. It is the first time since ‘Pokemon Ruby’ and ‘Pokemon Sapphire’ on GBA five years ago that Nintendo has had the top 2 games in the All Formats Chart.

‘Gran Turismo 5: Prologue’ and ‘Pro Evolution Soccer 2008’ fall one place, dropping to No’s 4 and 5 respectively. The ever-present ‘Brain Training’ is the only All Formats Top 10 game to move up the chart, climbing from No9 to No8. Bundling and retailer promotions mean rises for ‘Sonic and the Secret Rings’ up from No25 to No17, ‘Rayman Raving Rabbids 2’ up from No22 to No19, ‘WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2008’ up from No34 to No21 and ‘Halo 3’ a re-entry at No31. The only other new entry this week is Sony’s ‘Singstar Summer Party’ on PS2, which debuts at No30.
