Drunken_Squirrel Posted September 4, 2006 Posted September 4, 2006 Due to the fact that in the past i have tended to avoid any game that involved severe usage of numbers, Until today i have never owned a Final Fantasy game. Im on holiday in Florida and picked up a copy of Crystal Chronicals on the cheap. I've used to this as my cue to finally get into the series from the beginning. I know that there have been a number of remakes on the GBA, so i've just done a search. Upon finding that FF IV is really FF II, I realised it wasn't going to be as easy as it first seemed. So can anybody please give me the best place to start the series, and a mchronological order for all rellevent titles so I can be on the look out for them. Thanks in advance.
Hero-of-Time Posted September 4, 2006 Posted September 4, 2006 In all fairness there really isnt a place to start in these games as they all have different stories and characters ( exception of Biggs, Wedge and Cid ) Everyone has their favourite FF game, most will say FFVII is the best but I say FFVIII. I suppose it depends how you relate to the characters. Here is a list of the core titles of the FF series Final Fantasy I+II ( GBA + PSOne ) Final Fantasy III ( DS ) Final Fantasy IV ( GBA + PSOne ) Final Fantasy V ( GBA + PSOne ) Final Fantasy VI ( GBA + PSOne ) Final Fantasy VII ( PSOne ) Final Fantasy VIII ( PSOne ) Final Fantasy IX ( PSOne ) Final Fantasy X ( PS2 ) Final Fantasy X-2 ( PS2 ) Final Fantasy XI ( PC & Xbox 360 ) Final Fantasy XII ( PS2 )
McMad Posted September 4, 2006 Posted September 4, 2006 Everyone has their favourite FF game, most will say FFVII is the best but I say FFVIII. Ugh the whole moody teenage thing pissed me off in that game, and then I felt like vomiting at the story when they got to the bit where they had to travel through time. That's when I gave up. Final Fantasy IX is the best Final Fantasy to start with, the battle system isn't too hard and it's just a really fun game, then you should probably move on to VII. As you can probably tell those two Final Fantasies are my favourite.
Drunken_Squirrel Posted September 4, 2006 Author Posted September 4, 2006 Oh ok, so I could just jump straight in at any point in the series without taking anything away? That makes things easier. As does the fact that I+II are on the same cart. I'll mainly be on the lookout for them for now. Thanks.
mike-zim Posted September 4, 2006 Posted September 4, 2006 i have never played FF so i might go for 1&2
demonmike04 Posted September 4, 2006 Posted September 4, 2006 i have never played FF so i might go for 1&2 Get the dawn of souls version if you have GBA, its absolutely brilliant. The first one has a half assed story, the but the second one is slowly becoming one of my favourite games. I strongly suggest that if you can put up with a crap translation, you buy the PSone version of IV, as it was very buggy in the gba version, such as occasional slowdown in battle, due to it not being optimised for the hardware.
Pit-Jr Posted September 4, 2006 Posted September 4, 2006 if you wanted a condensed but complete FF experience, id go with V, VI, and VII. The rest are good but lacking or too outdated(cant speak for the III on the DS though).
Hellfire Posted September 4, 2006 Posted September 4, 2006 I would say II V and VI. We'll see how XII fares.
Drunken_Squirrel Posted September 5, 2006 Author Posted September 5, 2006 I got IV today. I'll stay on the look out for I+II then get III when it comes out. I've got the ball rolling anyway.
MoogleViper Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 Everyone has their favourite FF game, most will say FFVII is the best but I say FFVIII. I think so too. I just thought you could get into the game more easily.
KKOB Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 FF XI is available on NTSC PS2 if you have the network adapter and the HDD add on :p I got IV today. I'll stay on the look out for I+II then get III when it comes out. I've got the ball rolling anyway. I+II arent that good, theres hardly any story and the random battles do really piss me off on I+II. dont pay much more than 20ish quid for them. My favorite FF is FF IX the characters i found more engaging and i loved the story and the graphics we're pretty much the best of PSone i loved the battle system in it and Vivi is the ultimate best ever FF charcater :p
Zell Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 FFIX is a really good place to start, not too hard, nice system, good character and overall a really fun game. My fav is FFVIII though.
demonmike04 Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 I+II arent that good, theres hardly any story and the random battles do really piss me off on I+II. dont pay much more than 20ish quid for them. Final Fantasy II? Hardly any story? The only possible thing with number 2 is the drastic change in the level up system. Cant wait to get FFVI on GBA, I played through a little on my friends playstation and I enjoyed it very much, FFV's story at the beggining involving a certain charecter made me laugh though..
Pit-Jr Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 Vivi is the ultimate best ever FF charcater :p Yes, we need more Vivi and Steiner-like characters and less douchebags like Titus and Vaan.
McMad Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 Zidane was the best Final Fantasy lead, we need more fun leads and less whiny and moody ones. We also need some more characters like Barret, agressive but fun to watch.
Drunken_Squirrel Posted September 6, 2006 Author Posted September 6, 2006 FF XI is available on NTSC PS2 if you have the network adapter and the HDD add on :p I+II arent that good, theres hardly any story and the random battles do really piss me off on I+II. dont pay much more than 20ish quid for them. My favorite FF is FF IX the characters i found more engaging and i loved the story and the graphics we're pretty much the best of PSone i loved the battle system in it and Vivi is the ultimate best ever FF charcater :p I like to do things chronologically. If i've done them then they will help me to enjoy the others more because i won't have a feeling that i've missed something in the back of my mind. I yam what I yam.
darksnowman Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 Dont forget Tactics! I think Final Fantasy II has a really good story and is a massive upgrade over the first, and they stand out even more for me if you look at em in terms of how old they are. The level up system in number two is different, yes, but it doesnt ruin the game that much... Tell me this though, Final Fantasy V, is it coming out for GBA?
Drunken_Squirrel Posted September 7, 2006 Author Posted September 7, 2006 Is FF XI an online specific game? I do not have the facilties at home for this so that might be a write off. Would i be missing anything if i let that one slide and just focused on the rest?
Hero-of-Time Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 Is FF XI an online specific game? I do not have the facilties at home for this so that might be a write off. Would i be missing anything if i let that one slide and just focused on the rest? It doesnt matter if you miss any, like I said all of them have very different stories. I never played FF XI and I doubt I ever will. I like my FF games to be a single player experience with an intense and emotional story. The last thing I want is to play FF with some kid shouting/typing rubbish while Im trying to take in whats going on.
demonmike04 Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 Tell me this though, Final Fantasy V, is it coming out for GBA? Yes, so is VI too.
Drunken_Squirrel Posted September 8, 2006 Author Posted September 8, 2006 Yes, so is VI too. According to Gamespot both V and VI will be out by November.
Ramar Posted September 8, 2006 Posted September 8, 2006 The last thing I want is to play FF with some kid shouting/typing rubbish while Im trying to take in whats going on. You'd be lucky. Most FFXI players are mutes, I swear no one ever talked when I use to play the game. Most likely because most of the players are Japanese.
Drunken_Squirrel Posted September 11, 2006 Author Posted September 11, 2006 Found I+II on my last day. By the time i, ve done them 3 should be out and i have 4, so i'm on track now.
