Xbox 360 Console Discussion

Recommended Posts

GRID is rather spiffingly good. It's completely different to PGR or Forza again, a more arcade style white knuckle charge through the field. Excellent multi player in particular.

Also Codemasters are going to start making F1 games based on the game engine, which is making my inner pit crew dance with glee.

Its an astounding engine isn't it? I mean, it runs so fast at such high detail levels.

Microsoft Gears Up to Release Xbox 360 with New Chips.

Microsoft Corp. reportedly plans to release a new version its Xbox 360 video game system code-named Jasper in August and has already assigned IBM and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. to make chips for the new game console. However, there are other important rumours: TSMC got orders to produce the chip for code-named Valhalla Xbox 360 design, which is rumoured to combine microprocessor and graphics chip in a single piece of silicon.

The code-named Jasper design of the Xbox 360 game console will use ATI Xenos graphics and memory controller hub (GMCH) made using 65nm process at TSMC as well as IBM Xenon central processing unit (CPU) produced at IBM’s 65nm nodes. The new system design is projected to consume less electricity, use less complex cooling systems and also produce less noise.

By contrast, current Xbox 360 design named Falcon utilizes GMCH and eDRAM cores manufactured using 90nm process technology at TSMC as well as CPU built at IBM using 65nm fabrication process. The first-generation Xbox 360 used 90nm chips.

TSMC is chosen to make the 65nm GMCH chips, Advanced Semiconductor Engineering (ASE) is contracted to package and test the chips, and Nanya has won orders to supply flip-chip packaging substrates, reports China Economic News Service.

What is, perhaps, more important than the facts that TSMC again got orders to produce ATI Xenos GMCH and IBM land orders on IBM Xenon CPU at expense of Chartered Semiconductor (which once promised to start making 45nm chips for Advanced Micro Devices in 2009), is that “chips” for next-generation Xbox 360 code-named Valhalla will also be made at TSMC. Earlier rumours transpired that Valhalla features a chip that combines CPU and GMCH. In order to build such chip at TSMC, Microsoft either needs to disclose certain design rules of IBM’s fabrication process to the Taiwan-based semiconductor manufacturer, or completely rework the CPU according to fabrication process of TSMC.

The connection is that the director of Bioshock directed the PotC films, while the PotC producer is working on a PoP film.

The media player sucks. I had to watch those annoying "don't copy this disc!" crap for five-ten minutes in various languages and there was no way I could skip it.

Can you normally skip those messages on regular DVD players?

I don't have a dvd player other than the 360. I used to watch dvds on my laptop with VCL before I bought the 360 and better TV. VCL always skipped all advertisments and copyright stuff.

So, what would be the best position to have the 360 in? It makes sense to have it vertically because that way the contact surface is smaller, so it wouldn't heat up so easily because of the material it's standing on.

On the other way, standing vertically it blocks a big vent (seriously MS, learn to design your consoles better).

Horizontal, the disk tray doesn't really like being vertical.

Iv always had mine vertical, never had any problems with it disc related wise

Not sure if it was actually connected but I used to have mine vertical and the Viva Pinata disc suddenly stopped working one day, had to take it back, kept it horiz. ever since. Also like HF said, surely you're blocking that big vent by standing it vertically?

Really? Yeah i had mine vertical and the disc-tray played up after a while, it wouldn't open when you first pressed the button and the tray opened by itself when playing a game, very odd...so just becareful...

But it's designed to be vertical. It's vertical in all the demo pods and everything. As long as it's not moved while spinning then I reckon it'll be fine.

The demo pods don't have a disk in just some demo stuff on the HDD.

And the PS2 was designed to be vertical and we all know what happened there...

I'm not saying they don't work vertical but i bet there's more chance of problems than being horizontal.

PS2 was a system that could be played vertical but they sold a stand for it, which to me suggests its not really meant to be played vertical. Also PS2 was mostly down to crap lasers not people playing their console vertically.

I'm not talking about scratching disks, the new drives don't have that problem, which frankly was a stupid problem, I'm talking about overheating. But thanks for the responses :P
