Yeah, but then I'd have to get all US Blu-Ray movies then.

Who the hell wants to watch Blu Rays on their PS3 really?

Phil did confirm that the PAL/Euro version of the Playstation 3 currently has over 1200 compatible PS2 titles, with more to be added to the list by the time the console launches. This will be via a necessary firmware upgrade to 1.6 (the consoles were shipped over 4 weeks ago.)

Wonder if that fixes the ones that supposedly the Euro retail units wouldn't play.

The people who buy it as a cheap Blu-Ray Player?

Theres a $500 drive coming out, thus making that option fairly pointless...

A $500 Blu-Ray Player, or a $500 Blu-Ray player that does other stuff too...

Unless they want to, I don't know, play games too?

Edit:Aww, crap. Too late to scold Jordan.

Nope, i mean a set top box.

The fact is, the people who wanted a PS3 for the Blu Ray didn't want all the extra crap. There was a guy on the engadget blogs going on about that... i'll see if i can track it down.

Plus the PS3 (60GB anyway) is $599 not $500 :(.

I suppose.....and I also suppose that they'll go more towards the non-"cheap" ones, too.

But the ones in US/Japan would probably go for the 20GB if they didn't care much for the features.

I wonder how much Sony will sell the $500 Blu-Ray Player for in the UK...

But if it's anything like the PS2's DVD player then it will be shit compared to the stand alone ones anyway!

Posted
How can it be that shit? It's only playing a film...

Well I dunno if it was just bad luck but my brothers PS2, a couple of friends and the one we had in our 6th form common room would jump around sometimes and not play some films.

It was like the disc was scratched - but it wasn't!

Yeah the first models of the PS2 weren't that good as a DVD player, they sorted that out as time went on though. The Blu-Ray in the PS3 seems to be a lot better than the first PS2 DVD players. There hasn't been any complaints from what I've seen around the place.

Same with HD DVD on XBOX 360 as far as I'm aware.

But the thing is if that is also crap then you don't have to buy it!

What sucks is that you're forced to pay for something when in a years time you'll probably be able to get better and cheaper stand alone players.

Remeber the PS3 can get firmwire upgrades as well, to improve on any luanch faults.

I think your Forgetting PS3 games are on blu ray so you need it.

True, I was forgetting that but I still think its unnecessary. Do the games really need to be on blu-ray, couldn't they have just released them on dvd (or whatever it is current game use) and then released the blu-ray player as a separate addon?

Who knows, but according to the Resistance dudes, having all the sounds, languages and so on used up more space than a DVD would allow them to. It will benefit companies making RPGs anyway. Blue Dragon on 360 is 3 DVDs.
