Somehow, Flappy Bird returned.

Quote

Flappy Bird®, the iconic mobile gaming classic enjoyed by more than 100 million people, officially returns after flying the coop more than a decade ago. Flappy Bird will return to a variety of platforms, including web browsers and new dedicated apps planned in 2025 for iOS and Android, with other platforms to be announced.

Often imitated but never duplicated, Flappy Bird's return is spearheaded by the Flappy Bird Foundation, a new team of passionate fans committed to sharing the game with the world. The Flappy Bird Foundation Group and affiliates have acquired the official Flappy Bird trademark rights from Gametech Holdings LLC, along with the rights for the original game and character Piou Piou vs. Cactus, the mobile title that has long been credited as originally inspiring the iconic bird.

"It's been a decade-long, convoluted journey to get here, but we're so excited to finally begin sharing Flappy Bird once again with the world," said a spokesperson for the Flappy Bird Foundation. Michael Roberts, the chief creative behind Flappy Bird's return, added, "We are beyond excited to be bringing back Flappy Bird and delivering a fresh experience that will keep players engaged for years to come. We have big plans for our little Bird!"

Kek, the developer of Piou Piou and founding team member, explained, "Today is a milestone not just in gaming but for me personally. It's so cool to see how influential Piou Piou has been for developers and hundreds of millions of gamers over the years. It's incredible to work alongside such a dedicated team of fans and creators who are truly passionate about changing the industry narrative and together bringing the original Flappy Bird back to life."

Planned future releases, including desktop and mobile web browser, and native app versions on iOS and Android are scheduled for 2025. The upcoming expanded Flappy Bird releases will debut new game modes, characters, progression, and massive multiplayer challenges for the world to flap together—with the Flappy Bird Foundation team set to revamp the game's ecosystem while maintaining the familiarity of the game design that was enjoyed globally.

Okay, so while mobile phones aren't technically a console, they are a platform – and while only iOS and Android are confirmed for now, it sounds like other platforms are on the way, which I have to imagine at least includes PC, if not traditional consoles too.

Curious if anyone here was playing this back in 2013/2014, and also how the heck is it already over a decade old?! I was halfway through high school when this came out

I like how they ignore how Flappy Bird is very much inspired by a Cheep Cheep from Mario.

...wait, are Cheep Cheeps to blame for modern society's obsession with fish lips?

Hands down one of the most baffling things in modern times. Which man finds this attractive on a woman? Everyone bloke I speak to about it thinks the fish lips thing is hideous.

So it seems like this version of the game is a rip off done without the consent of the original creator.

It was originally removed because the original creator hated that people were addicted to his game. Now it's being used against his will to push purposefully addictive and predatory practices.

Which makes this announcement surprisingly dark and depressing.

Oh, absolutely. I think it's a very small percentage of men who don't mind this type of thing, and they're not the type of men I would want my own daughter in the future to be with, is probably the best way I can phrase it.

I mean, I totally get body dysmorphia and people having body issues - couldn't relate more to it because I've almost always struggled with it to some degree - but I feel like if you're having thoughts of doing that to yourself, that's the time to step back from social media and certain TV shows in my eyes and recalibrate. Waaaaaaaaaaay too many people my age have ended up getting their lips done at best and so many other things at worse (cheekbones, nose, chin, etc.) and it honestly just makes me really sad for them.

But I guess when you're not conscious of what you're being fed and see hundreds if not thousands of faces each day thanks to social media of these models who may or may not have had work done (most have), combined with more disposable income and a greater appetite for spending (because so many people are going to be struggling to buy houses they don't bother to save towards them or other savings goals in the first place), this is what we get.

My younger sister (only by a couple of years) watches things like Keeping Up With The Kardashians, and I'm just like, HOW, AS A WOMAN, CAN YOU SUPPORT THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE POPULARISED SO MUCH OF WHAT WOMEN WANT TO ASPIRE TO AND HATE ABOUT THEMSELVES. It's gross. Go back and look at so many of the girls and women shown in cartoons in the 2000s (something like Bratz comes to mind) and I'm not surprised we've ended up here.

Urgh.

Well, on the upside, at least we can say that the statement that "there are other fish in the sea" is made more accurate each day, which is a win for metaphors and English Lit teachers everywhere :p

I always thought it was removed because it clearly used Super Mario sprites, (the pipes were clearly ripped straight from SMW) and because the game got huge he didn’t want Nintendo to go after him?

Either way I never played it and have no interest in this. It sounds like this is just a cash grab from what @Cube posted.
