Bayonetta was always going to bomb.

The 1st game was multi platform and bombed. Nintendo saved the franchise but for whatever reason the franchise doesn’t sell and was never going to be a system seller for the Wii U.

Also remember Bayonetta doesn't really fit into that box of games which the Nintendo demographic likes to play. Its great that Nintendo got Bayonetta on the platform and they need to get more titles like that but more importantly they need to fix the demographic issue and get to the bottom of why there Nintendo platform owners don't buy games like Bayonetta or more 'R' rated games.

'It sold half of what Bayonetta 1 did on the 360, which at the time had an installed base 800K units smaller.'

That's disappointing but kinda not surprising.

Mixed bag for Wii U. Bayonetta 2 has officially flopped in Japan. Fatal Frame debuts at number 7 and Wii U sales were nearly 10,000 for the week. Smash Bros. 3DS meanwhile continues to dominate the competition.

Fatal Frame has to come outside Japan. There's no way they could recoup the costs of development from Japan alone.

That's the first time I've seen 3 Wii U games in the top 20 at the same time.

How big did the original Bayonetta do in Japan compared to the Western markets? I had assumed Japan was where it would do best, and if that's still the case, then it's not looking good for the west...

I'm gussing that number in brackets for software is sales to date? And for hardware last week's sales?

Yes that's right.

According to Media Create Bayonetta sold 135,242 copies on PS3 in its first week and 64,325 copies on the Xbox360 in Japan. It sold 1.35 million worldwide but it didn't meet Platinum's president Tatsuya Minami's expectations. God knows what they think now of 2's sales. It should sell better in the West than Japan.

Just a note that this Fatal Frame actually had a better launch than its predecessor which was on the Wii

It did better than both Wii games. When you look at this chart it doesn't seem so bad compared to the others but you've got to wonder how they can afford to keep making them. Those sales figures don't look profitable.

Is samurai warriors 4 on the PS4 not from the same series?

Yes and it bombed really hard on PS4 but it was released across all 3 Sony platforms. Sales in the first week on each platform were, PS3 with 120,452 copies sold and ported to with Vita 39,597 copies sold and PS4 with 11,757.

Don't you mean it didn't meet Sega's expectations hence they refused to publish Bayonetta 2.

No, it was Tatsuya Minami who said he wasn't happy with the sales. SEGA did back Bayonetta 2 for a while but then pulled the plug, that's when Nintendo stepped in. SEGA might not have been that happy with the sales either.

Microsoft Issues Statement on Poor Xbox One Sales in Japan

We all expected that the Xbox One would have a rough time finding a foothold in Japan, but we had no idea it was going to be like this! The Xbox and the Xbox 360's performances were bad enough, but the Xbox One’s launch last month was the worst in fifteen years! And if you thought sales were going to pick up from the first 23,562 it sold in its first week, then prepare for the shocker.

In its third week of availability, the Xbox One only sold 1,314 units. After three weeks, the console has failed to break the 30,000 unit mark, and not until Scalebound, which has no foreseeable release window, is there anything remotely resembling a Japanese exclusive that could push the audience into buying one.

In response to this, Xbox Japan boss Takashi Sensui has issued a statement on the status of his console to Famitsu.

It’s not as though we’re satisfied with the current sales state. We hope to continue through taking user feedback and improving [the Xbox One] and offering content that everyone can enjoy. We are also aware that reaching out to let more people know about the Xbox One is vital. However, the current console generation has become very long. We hope to lay out a long-term vision and to focus on publicity for our console. Taking the first step was very important, and as for how to permeate the market from here, we hope to continue to do our best.

Phil Spencer also stressed in the interview how important Japan and Japanese developers were to the success of the Xbox One, but it has a long road ahead of itself making it a success.

How genuine is that, though? Does Microsoft really need Japan to survive? Before the Xbox brand name became a serious contender on the console scene, Japan had roughly a majority of the video game market share wrapped up under its companies like Nintendo and Square Enix. PC gamers kept to themselves, and console gamers kept to their own.

Once the Xbox 360 came into play and Western style PC games started to take hold in the living room, Japan started losing that ground to a new generation of console gamers no longer attracted to Mario, Final Fantasy, and the usual suspects. Who has the last laugh now?

Microsoft can appeal to Japan all it wants, but the two are like oil and water. The Xbox can’t succeed in Japan, and Japan continues to struggle in a world where the Xbox has changed the standards for console gaming. Something tells me these two need an overnight lock-in party at the local rec center. I mean, come on!

http://www.technobuffalo.com/2014/10/02/microsoft-issues-statement-on-poor-xbox-one-sales-in-japan/

And we think Nintendo and Sony have it bad in Japan. Microsoft are wasting their time, they should pack their bags and go home.

Feels a bit like the Wii U the other way round.

However I think the latter sentiments are bang on - MS/Xbox never really needed Japan and still don't, it's a much smaller market. WiiU need the west a lot more however, due to its size and potential.

Sad to see so many Wii U games failing in Japan, it's pretty much a given now that anything without Mario in it will not succeed on the Wii U in the West so I always remain hopeful that they will at least do decent numbers in Japan. But as Hyrule Warriors and Baynotta 2 have proved, this is no longer the case.

In fact, looking at those charts I can't believe just how bad console gaming has become over there. I knew things weren't great but looking at the actual numbers is shocking. The fact that the Wii U is the best selling console of the week, by selling under 10,000 units, and that's WITH the help of a new title in fatal frame and recently released Bayonetta, says it all.

The Xbox One is pretty much dead in Japan and that's a given but I can't help but wonder how Sony and Nintendo will ever really build a substantial following for their consoles either.

It's not just console gaming, it's gaming in general. 3DS is down 50% on last year. New games always are having soft launches except if they're Pokémon, Monster Hunter or Youkai Watch.

We have similar things in the west. Xbox One and PS4 are not doing well in comparison to how their predecessors did. People only think the PS4 is doing amazing because it had a great launch and thus has higher numbers, but month on month, it's not doing amazingly at all. When the PS3 was doing similar numbers, not long after its launch, people were worried and saying Sony messed up. Wii U is flailing and the Xbox One is doing worse practically every month than the 360 ever did in the same month throughout its life.

Games are having soft launches too, unless they're the massively hyped AAA games, and those are even getting lower ratings critically now. Hell, the new CoD's pre-orders are down 50% on last year.

Even indie companies are suffering. Saw one the other day comment how sales aren't good because people are holding off to see if it will be on PS+.

There's something wrong going on in the industy and I truly believe we're heading for a crash

Where are you getting your figures from?

I know you said West but a quick look shows that both the PS3 and PS4 launched in November and by the end of the following September had sold 10.5 million http://vgsales.wikia.com/wiki/PlayStation_3 while the PS4 had sold 10 million by mid August http://www.theverge.com/2014/8/12/5995275/sony-has-sold-10-million-playstation-4s

I suspect sales in Japan of the former were greater, but if that was the case knowing as we do that the PS4 is fairing better in the West I can't imagine PS4 vs PS3 sales in the West are weaker. It's doing about even to it's predecessor, but the reason Sony is getting positive press is because of their policies, approach and marketing being so much better than with the PS3, plus the others aren't doing so well. Strong sales against weak competition looks better than the same sales against stronger competition.

And Sony did mess up the PS3, it's right to say that.

I hope you're not trying to suggest that indie developers are in a bad boat because one of them said they were ;)

I'm talking monthly figures via NPD (since we don't get European figures), not LTD. PS4 was incredibly front-loaded while its monthly sales now are what would have been deemed adequate at best.

Also, I am just bringing that point up because it actually is a point of contention, and I hear it all the time from people who say they'll wait for a game to be on PS+ or a Steam Sale etc.

Out of curiosity, how much money would an indie get from being featured on PS+ though?

And I think Wii U aside (which if Mario Kart can't save, nothing can), consoles are just taking a bit longer to catch on here in the West. I'd bet that console gaming is still as big now as in 07, it's just that people are upgrading a lot slower and still buying games for their existing consoles instead.

And I don't think there's any chance of a market crash, the industry is just changing. It is more about AAA titles and indie games, with less of the middle-ish titles (such as Hyrule Warriors) making it a bit more like the film industry I guess, which seems to be all about independent movies or big AAA blockbusters like Transformers or Super Hero Movie #726 without much inbetween.

Just looking at titles this year, Watch_Dogs ended up being the biggest new franchise release in the UK ever. Then that was overtaken by Destiny. Console gaming is still very strong here, software-wise at least, people are just taking a bit longer to make that generation jump wheras in Japan, it just seems like they're not buying anything at all.

To be honest, is the Japanese market taking a tumble really that bad? As long as the market exists, everything is fine and dandy, the only thing that changes is how publishers decide what makes the cut and what doesn't and how it's advertised which, to us lot on a gaming forum, is amazing as that means they'll drop the fucking mass appeal catering.

I don't mind how things are now, but I do get why there is the universal cringe amongst gamers when you hear lines like "accessible to everyone" or "we want Call of Duty audience". Popularity is over rated when you're in the hardcore spectrum, bring on the crash and force Nintendo into modern day standards!

LTD across the same lifespan is just as valid really, the only difference monthly will show is the flow. But still, making any kind of comparison between different generations when the markets are so fundamentally different is a fools errand anyway.
