Wouldn't want to ruin the atmosphere @Ashley :p

Got my ShopTo text about 9/10ish this morning that it's on the way, hopefully be at my parents tomorrow and I'll have a bit of a punt on it in the evening. Seems they've finally managed to get me with the game I didn't care for :p

I'm finding it hard to believe that a western developed FPS (CoD) outsold Captain Toad. I thought the Japanese loved cute and colourful games? :(

It's Wii U. Even so that is a slow opening week.

Winning Eleven seems to be dying in Japan as well. Poor opening and only 26k on PS4

They do, just not on the Wii U.

28K opening week though, ouch :blank: I thought it would have done at least 50K.

Xbox One has smashed the one million sales barrier in the UK, MCV can reveal.

It’s hit this number after out-selling PlayStation 4 for three weeks in a row, UK retailers have told us.

The resurgence in Xbox One sales has come on the back of a number of blockbuster game launches, including Sunset Overdrive, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and Halo: The Master Chief Collection.

“We’re seeing fantastic momentum with Xbox One having sold almost 10 million units to retailers worldwide,” said Xbox UK marketing director Harvey Eagle.

“This momentum is reflected in the UK, particularly over the last three weeks, which is extremely encouraging as we approach the Christmas shopping period. People buy consoles to play the best games, and Xbox One is home to the best games. Halo: The Master Chief Collection is one of the highest rated next-gen console games released, Sunset Overdrive is the highest rated new franchise on any next-gen console and Forza Horizon 2 is the highest rated driving game on any next gen console.

Good stuff.

Competition is great for the consumer.

Wow, wasn't expecting that! Guess the heavy discounting and game bundles really paid off (Well, we have no idea how much that affects the bottom line but it gets the consoles into homes).

Great to see that the video game industry is still very much alive and doesn't appear to be dying as was thought during the Wii U launch period.

XBOX ONE HAS NOW OUTSOLD WII U WORLDWIDE

It was bound to happen sooner or later and the signs were there, but the Xbox One has now outsold the Wii U worldwide. The Xbox One has reportedly sold 7.61 million units worldwide and the Wii U has sold 7.45 million units. The Xbox One launched in November 2013 while the Wii U launched back in November 2012. Interestingly the Xbox One has been outselling the PlayStation 4 in the UK during the past three weeks according to MCV.

This both saddens and annoys me but it's to be expected.

This both saddens and annoys me but it's to be expected.

If you didn't see this coming you're an idiot. Wii U was never gonna stand in the same frame as the others, sadly.

(that's the royal you as it were btw, not you you @Wii)

EDIT: Not sure how apt it is but I'm just gonna quote myself from @Debug Mode's pachter roleplay thread(which shamefully got little response) around this time last year.

Is MS all that doomed?

Xbone isn't struggling at all - it's a relative comparison to the PS4 with bias and exposure via internet where we spend our time - there's plenty folks who don't and will be getting the Xbone and/or PS4 outside of what we see. It's indicative and the Xbone won't sell as well as the PS4, but it WILL sell well. It'll beat the Wii U's sales in the same time frame.

How many units of each?

As above, they'll both beat the Wii U. PS4 without a doubt, Xbone by January time-on-time comparison. PS4 might even hit shortages, not due to over-demand, but due to possible conservative supply by Sony. They're looking to avoid stale stock on shelves. Despite this, they're going to hit the supply/demand trend pretty close to what it is and people will be mildly impressed - the delays will be due to shipping stock etc.

Who 'wins' the launch period, and will that victory continue through the post launch blues?

Sony PS4. They win because they already have - coming back to my internet and exposure comment. That's influence right there, it affects them and the market. Their publicity is made even without their effort. They're going to top up on this from all angles, big blockbuster titles that the masses want but also the little titles for the regular core gamers(who are, ironically, not too different from wii u gamers). They might pull out some very interesting steam like digital distribution channels, with time limited deals that in themselves boost sales(as steam and indie bundle/PWYW deals do). MS might do more peaks and troughes, Sony'll do an average standard long game, and it'll pay off. MS might focus too much on living room than gaming, Sony'll do both but still keep it gaming - as a result they'll get the larger made market - Gamers. I should add here, I hate sony - or I did for a long while. I tried and did avoid them for so long, but they've tempted me in recent years, and I think they've really learnt and will take the next generation. I might even get suckered into it despite my own dislike.

How will Nintendo factor into the Xbox One and PS4 launch hype?

They won't. They've opted for a different market and they're so stubborn they won't try to switch and possibly succeed in niether. They're an alternative product for an alternative market. They've severely hampered their own chances. The console will be weak, it won't be a major success, its sales won't pick up enough, it won't get enough 3rd party and indie support, it'll essentially fail but at the same time it won't. Nintendo will give so little of a fuck about actually being a success that they'll manage to not lose too much on it. Nintendo will survive, but Wii U owners will feel really burned. The 3DS and handheld division will continue to thrive, and that'll keep the Wii U market torn but interested - because they know that Nintendo can, but don't. Nintendo are so mad that frankly, they're just not predictable. As a company financially they'll survive because they won't ever attempt to not or to take risks, as a game developer/maker/producer, I honestly don't know.

@Rummy I know it's not directed at me. I knew Wii U was doomed even before it launched. It didn't have to be this way but it is because Nintendo are too slow to change. There's so many examples down through the years. Wouldn't leave cartridge behind for home consoles, what are they using now? Said local multiplayer was far better than online and that it was just a fad? What are they embracing now but at a slow rate. If it was the air that I breathe I'd be dead. Too late embracing HD, way behind the curve. Jumping on amiibo this Christmas like it's their new best friend when they had the chance years ago and turned it down. Skylanders and Infinity are well established but Nintendo will make a dent not because they're doing it right but because their franchises are so strong. Edited by Wii

I know you'd have known, just covering my bases brah. I can't disagree with those sentiments though, I think if you had to describe in one way it'd either be 'slow' or 'behind the curve', they're quite good at what they do - they're just doing it either not to full potential or a little bit late.

Really poor performance from Nintendo. I hope and expect Super Smash Bros. Wii U to place highly next week.

There's also a rumour that Bayonetta 2 sold 68,000 copies last month in the U.S. We'll have to wait for official NPD figures to release to confirm this.

It was never going to do well but to not even make it into the Wii U chart says it all really. It will be interesting to see just how many copies Ubisoft do mange to shift.

Smash does the business.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is now the fastest-selling Wii U title ever in the U.S. market (dethroning Mario Kart 8), with more than 490,000 physical and digital units combined sold during the three-day period of Nov. 21 through Nov. 23.

SUPER SMASH BROS. FOR WII U IS THE FASTEST-SELLING WII U GAME EVER IN THE U.S.

If you were going to diagram an equation for a record-breaking software launch, it would probably look something like this:

Popular Franchise (more than 14 million Super Smash Bros. games sold in the U.S. alone)

+

Demand (it has been six years since the last Super Smash Bros. console game, plus the new game benefits from heightened awareness for the franchise coming on the heels of the Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS game)

+

Critical Acclaim (current Metacritic score of 93, making it the highest-rated original game of this generation, tied with last year’s Super Mario 3D World game)

+

Strong Reaction from Fans (current user score of 9.2 on Metacritic, becoming the eighth Wii U game to have a Metacritic score of 85 or higher AND a user score of 8.5 or higher)

“The Nintendo holiday is off to a great start, but there’s a lot of work left to do and a few more surprises in store for our fans,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “With great deals coming on Black Friday and Cyber Monday and great content like Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker launching next week, Nintendo will offer shoppers the best combination of fun and value this holiday season.”

Very decent. Again hits home that releasing the 3DS version first was indeed a smart decision.

In the UK we are looking at 3 figure numbers. I know its an old game now but even still that's remarkably low.

I think it's more to do with how disgusting,y ubisoft have handled it. This wouldn't have happened if it launched at the same time. Or if they priced it at a senseble level.

it may not have been as bad but would still have been poor. COD Ghosts and AC Black Flag both launched alongside other versions and still accounted for minimal sales. It would seem that we are in a very small minority of gamers who buy adult games for Nintendo consoles. The fact that FIFA 13 is outselling a brand new game must show EA that it would be worth making a FIFA 15 port.

I think most Wii U owners have a second console, and so given the decision to buy Watchdogs/AC4/COD they'll buy it on the more powerful machine.

I get that but were talking of less than a thousand copies sold. I don't know how many Wii U's have been sold in the UK a new major retail game selling in the hundreds is awful no matter what.
