General Gaming Sales/Charts Discussion

Recommended Posts

Good news about Bayonetta though it will be interesting to see how it does next week. Truly heartbreaking about Just Dance. I know, I know, I can hear your snarls, but it really is a great party game and one of the few that actually has a good budget and doesn't take itself too seriously. Also improves with every instalment.

I knew the Wii version would start to drop off but ubi were really pushing the Wii U version this time and it is out on Kinect/move for both gen consoles too, so thought it would at least do decent numbers spread across that many consoles. I guess the motion control fad is well and truly dead. Damn hardcore gamers ruining it for us all :p You can't play Bayonetta with a group of friends when you're drunk!

I expect it to disappear off the charts next week mind you, but it's at least a small victory here!

Yes, a few of my mates expressed their desire for a Wii U because of Bayonetta 2. I don't know whether they'll actually buy one, but it did a lot to get the machine noticed.

Nintendo's financials are out.

Operating loss of 0.2bn yen. The lowest the loss has been at the 6 month point since the losses began.

Net profit of 14.3bn yen. The first time there has been a significant net profit at the 6 month since the losses began.

Net sales are down, but expected a tad considering there has been very little released and the 3DS slowed

Wii U is at 7.29m LTD

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS has shipped 3.2m by the end of September

Tomodachi Life has sold a further 1.27m this half of the fiscal year. Total of 3.12m

The tides are turning.

That's a striking reduction in cost of sales! Very impressive! :o

I wonder where the majority of those savings came from... It's certainly not through staff cuts (if anything, with all the contractual work they've ordered from Namco and T-K, you'd have thought it would've gone up if anything!), and while they did restructure NOE, that only came towards the end of the quarter so the results from that wouldn't have been reflected yet...

NOA made up the majority of their operating loss outside of their development R&D, some (including I) speculate that they were writing blank cheques to retail channels to keep Wii U on the shelf in order to keep that all important retail presence alive, resulting in huge running costs associated with NOA, so...

Hope we get a more revealing breakdown later on today or tomorrow. Should make for an interesting read. Either way, Iwata wasn't joking when he said they were going to get costs down! Very impressive :D

Speaking of impressive, Tomodachi is also very impressive too! Bet they're kicking themselves for not releasing the DS game back in the day now

It's gonna end up selling more in the west than in Japan when all is said and done!

Nintendo surprises with positive earnings

Japanese video game giant Nintendo beat market expectations to post an operating profit of 215m yen ($2m; £1.2m) in the July-to-September period.

In the same quarter a year ago, the firm made an 18bn-yen operating loss.

Analysts were expecting the company to record a 3.7bn-yen loss this time, but Nintendo said it was on track to post its first annual profit in four years.

The console game maker has struggled in recent years, facing stiff competition from video games on mobile devices.

The maker of hit games such as Super Mario Bros stood by its forecast of a full-year operating profit of 40bn yen.

A weaker yen boosted its earnings and offset slowing sales, the company said on Thursday.

4 years?! That's a hell of a long time waiting for a profit. What I don't get is turning their first quarterly profit of 215 million Yen to reaching 40 billion Yen operating profit by the end of the year? They must be expecting some mega gangbuster sales for that to happen. Can't see it myself and it's not the first time they've had crazy expectations.

Their operating loss shifted by 10bn yen in 3 months. We now have their best quarter, with amiibo etc. which could boost it dramatically.

It's doable.

Yes the crazy expectations are alive and well.

"Nintendo said Wii U sales had improved since "Mario Kart 8", the latest game to feature its ever popular Mario character, went on sale in May. With the key year-end holiday sales period coming up, Nintendo said it still aims to sell 3.6 million of the consoles in the current business year though March 2015."

That better include 3DS, it must do. Of course it does, doesn't it?

Edit: No they mean just Wii U.

Nintendo typically make around 50-60% of its yearly sales just during the Xmas season. They get a bigger holiday boost than anyone else and they have the launch of Smash and Amiibo (very very high profit margins) this season.

They're actually making money off of Wii U hardware now unlike before, they have the launch of the New3DS in Japan & Australia (dem EU importers paying dat Australian tax too ;) ), they have the launch of Pokemon OR/AS (which is actually tracking ahead of X&Y in terms of pre-orders amazingly enough), they have the launch of Mario Kart 8's DLC and they have the continued sales of their evergreen catalogue titles, many of which are about to get their first Xmas boost.

Combine that with the significant saving in running costs that they've somehow achieved and it suddenly seems doable...

(BTW, that quib about them not posting a yearly profit in 4 years is a bit misleading since they did actually post a small profit for fiscal year 2012 - ok mainly off the back of the appreciation of the yen but still!)

1.1 Wii U million sales from April-September is impressive considering how bad they'd been doing previously but 3.6 million more until March. I hope they do but I just don't see it happening.

Even if they sold the same amount as last year with no increase at all from this point onwards, they would still hit that 3.6 million mark for the fiscal year.

It's actually a very conservative estimate unlike the last few years. The 3DS however? Not a chance. With the New3DS not coming out till next year in the west, there's no way they're hitting the 12 million mark...

That's fine making a couple hundred million Yen profit this quarter but you have also to factor in the opening quarter loss of 9.5 billion Yen. So in the second half of the year they've to make over 49 billion to reach the 40 billion Yen target. Yes everything is loaded towards Christmas but then the last quarter will be quiet comparatively. Most of, if not all the analysts and reports say it can't be done. But then some of them got this quarters predictions wrong so we'll see.

Think about it. The Wii U has sold 7.3 million in almost 2 years. Now they expect it to sell 3.6 million more in just 6 months with less retail support and 3rd party support than when they first started.

Only you would think 3.6m in a fiscal year is "crazy". It's just for the Wii U and it's perfectly logical and it really is doable.

No. They expect to sell 3.6 million more Wii U's in 6 months. Don't you go mentioning the word crazy, Looney Tunes. ;)

It's not clear. Is it 3.6 million total for the year or 3.6 million in 6 months?

Actually no. They only have to make 40bn yen Operating to make their target.

Their Operating Income for the first six months is -0.2bn. That wasn't the figure for this quarter, it's the figure for the fiscal year thus far. While yes, it's unlikely they'll hit 40bn operating income, there will almost certainly be a marked improvement over the last few years. Rome wasn't built in a day.

I've also not seen any analysts or reports say the 3.6m target cannot be done. Hell, it'll likely do 1m alone in America this winter. Wii U is about to get the largest push it ever has.

  11. Xbox 360 – 89 (88)
  12. PSP – 76 (100)

MH4U is doing savage. It should break 2 million copies sold next week. Wii U had another bad week. Looking at Nintendo's results this morning, it's doing worse than this time last year. The Evil Within didn't help PS4 much but maybe kept it from posting Wii U sales numbers. 3DS is where all the sales are at. It's sold x3 everything else combined.

Is there a way to avoid "automerged doublepost"? It's a bit silly to post a comment 6 hours later and it's still counted as 1 post. It then looks from the outside like nothing new has been posted.

The double post merge is on an eight hour timer.

I wonder if the tide will turn for Nintendo. After Smash Bros their big franchises are now out (I don't see Zelda coming in the next financial year). Their other titles are more experimental and will surely do well with existing audiences, but I'm not sure about their ability to bring in new ones.

1 week and Bayonetta 2 is gone from the UK charts. It didn't make the top 40 in either chart. Seriously, wtf are you UK gamers buying? It's really sad to see a great game like this not get the respect and sales it deserves.

https://www.chart-track.co.uk/index.jsp?c=p/software/uk/latest/index_test.jsp&ct=110015

Not a shock. Bayonetta bombed when it was multi platform and #2 was always going to bomb hard on the Wii U.

MK8 has seen a bit of a boost probably due to the DLC. A COD: AW version on Wii U regardless of sales couldn't have helped but up Wii U sales. The same goes for FIFA. If you're looking to buy a new console and see games like these missing, it definitely has to play a role in your purchasing decision.

Without a doubt! No COD or FIFA is an absolute steak to the heart of Wii U. I've said it many times on this forum that Nintendo should throw whatever money it takes to get those games on their system, because without them nobody is going to but the console and without the console they can't buy the games, which is where Nintendo really make their money. I'll be getting a PS4 soon and after that there are probably only 2 more games I'll buy for the Wii U in future.
