Dragon Quest did it, but Final Fantasy? I think not. DS was already a runaway success, as was the lower powered but hugely successful Wii. PS3 by comparison was not as commercially successful as either of those two same-generation formats (but considerably more powerful), yet FFXIII, XIII-2, XIII-3 and XIV have all released on PS3 (and some on 360, but that's a mere footnote for Japan). Ni no Kuni released on 3DS and PS3 - so at the worst, I could imagine a title releasing on both. Dragon Quest has also gone back to home console for DQX, and it wouldn't surprise me if future offline DQ main releases went back to consoles. DQVIII was about a million times more impressive than IX.

 

I very much think it's a case of trying to make the most visually impressive game they can for FF. They have gone somewhat style over substance in recent years, which can't be pulled off on handhelds.

 

If DQXI isnt on 3DS I would be amazed.

It might be, but hey, choosing to make X as an MMORPG and put it on a home console shows they're not just focusing on handheld main titles to make the most money.

 

Also what say you to the choice to put all main title FF games on PS3 and not the more popular handhelds, eh? :p

ONLY NINTENDO 3DS, WII U, XBOX ONE, AND PLAYSTATION 4 SHOW SOFTWARE GROWTH IN UK DURING JANUARY

Nintendo 3DS software in the United Kingdom sold over 50,000 units in January 2014, which is an increase of 47 percent from January 2013. Wii U has also faired well with software sales growing 91 percent, to 65,000 units. Unsurprisingly it’s the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 shifting the most amount of software sales out of the four platforms mentioned, adding nearly half a million software units to the market. Software sales for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 have declined along with the Wii and the Nintendo DS.

It's nice and all that Wii U software is on the increase but they're absolutely dwarved by the competition. 65k is pretty insignificant. February should hopefully see an increase thanks to DKCR:TF.

Next Gen games are doing well. Thief didnt get too many good reviews but it still seems to have sold really well. PvZ on XB1 & 360 again suggest Titanfall is going to be a big hit on the 360 and 360 owners are not migrating as quickly as maybe PS3 owners have to the PS4.

@Serebii by selling some copies I mean that updates of old games probably have more chance of doing better on the PS4 (see Tomb Raider sales) than the Wii U versions of old games which did pretty poorly.

 

That's why I was confused that he didn't get why they would come to PS4, when I know he praised being able to play the Wii U versions for the first time.

 

Also Rayman Legends was originally a Wii U exclusive and had been designed for the console, so it's not surprising Wii U owners had already bought into the game.

those releases made perfect sense, it was Nintendo showing that the Wii U unlike the Wii could and would get major 3rd party releases plus these were games that were not on the Wii so it was an incentive to upgrade.

 

If you've got a PS3 and like Rayman then you've got the game already and nobody is going to buy a PS4 for Rayman, so I can't get my head round who this is targeted at.

Rayman being released again is simply Ubi trying to get some easy sales for from the early adopters. The game bombed on everything as it always does.

 

those releases made perfect sense, it was Nintendo showing that the Wii U unlike the Wii could and would get major 3rd party releases plus these were games that were not on the Wii so it was an incentive to upgrade.

 

Only if you basically ignored the PS3/360 and stuck with the Wii only. Those games were too old by the time they were released on wii u and played on other platforms.

They weren't major third party releases though; they were old games that people had already played.

 

In some cases like Mass Effect 3 it just made no sense. The point of Mass Effect 3 is to play the trilogy (or at least comic + 2 + 3) so you had a story that meant something to you, as it was your story. Starting on the last game a while after it had come out on other consoles was just bizarre if you ask me.

 

Rayman Legends didn't sell amazingly so it reasons there are still many people who haven't bought it yet (unlike many of the Wii U titles, where most people interested had probably already bought it). If they can release it on the PS4 without too much effort then they may as well.

absolutely... and that is Nintendo's big failure with Wii U. Forget all the nonsense aboaut the gamepad, it's a brilliant piece of kit, Nintendo thought they could release some HD "hardcore" ports from PS3 and 360 and that would shift units as this was mostly what people were crying out for on Wii, but they failed to realise that a huge percentage of Wii owners already had a PS3 and/or 360 and therefore already had these games.

I sold my 360 a couple of years ago so I do fall into the catergory of people who had not played these game, which i guess is why I love the Wii U so much and don't get the game droughts as all these ports are new games to me.

That said PS4's library is almost entirely made up of last gen ports and that is selling like hot cakes so go figure.

How dot does Rayman not fall into your "old games that people have already played" theory?

Tomb Raider Definitive (X1/PS4) leapt to number 1 of the UK charts, so don't rudely imply anything when I suggest some consoles are more suitable for remakes/ports than others.

 

As for your other examples - ACIII was a month old when it hit Wii U. For this kind of game, that really is quite a bit. People that really want it aren't likely to hold off to buy it on Wii U if they already have one of the other systems are they? It was also cheaper on the other systems sooner as a result of it having been out longer. AC games notoriously drop off in price quickly. They are quick to turn over games.

 

FIFA and COD may be pretty big deals, but their dependence on a built up roster of friends means most people would probably rather buy it on the other consoles, which also have far more robust online infrastructures for this sort of thing. FIFA also came out 2 months later on Wii U (again, a pretty big deal for this sort of game).

 

Another look, and Batman was 1 year and 1 month later on Wii U too. How can you argue that Wii U is really competing here? Most of the games all came out later than the others, really.

The Wii U had no buzz at all prior to launch and people didnt even know what it was.

Sony have now sold 6 million PS4s.

Unless they have a major fuck up, they've essentially won publisher confidence for a good portion of this generation. It's pretty interesting to see how the table has turned yet again for Sony considering their abysmal start last generation.

So that's an increase of 700k from Feb 8th to March 2nd...

 

If 370k of that went to Japan (meaning that 2nd week sales are around 50-60k depending on tracker), then 430k was split across EU and the US over last month...

 

Quite the slowdown... guess supplies are still very limited...

The PS4/Xbone versions of games look almost no better than the PS3/360 versions of games either outside of a resolution increase; it's the weakest generational jump we've ever seen. Sony won because of the above reasons you listed, not because their hardware ran games at the highest resolution... The most powerful hardware has almost never won a generation, but it will do this time simply by default as MS shot themselves in the foot back when the Xbone was unveiled and they never fully recovered (and the Nintendo brand is pure manure in the eyes of the "gamer" demographic).

I think for the general consumer price and marketing are always key and Sony nailed both points. They have also shown that you don't need gimmicks to sell a console.

TBH, most of their success simply comes by not screwing up like MS did. Nintendo was never in the running for this market, so Sony won simply by not trying to screw consumers royally. For better or worse, it has become the "default" console.

 

If MS had put up a better fight, then "gimmicks" might have ended up being more important (and that's not to say that they didn't try some new things like the touchpad on the DS4, or game broadcasting - which of course MS did as well).

 

All it proves is that game quality means nothing for hardware adoption. Even if the same games can be played on the hardware they already own, they're gonna jump in because they know that they will have to eventually. Where else are they gonna go? It might as well be a monopoly!
