General Gaming Sales/Charts Discussion

Recommended Posts

Just realised that PSO2 sold over 60,000 copies despite being available free on PSN. That's absolutely fucking amazing. Sega really need to hurry up and just make an official English patch for it rather than bother with the segregated western servers.

Tell that to Polyphony Digital.

Nevermind PD, tell it to Silicon Knights. Too Human was developed across 3 generations and pretty much killed the company in its wake. And it was critically panned unlike anything PD have done.

But at 5 years in development, I don't think anyone can accuse Pikmin 3 of being rushed. There is a flipside argument of it not being given priority and that's why it's taken so long though but they clearly weren't in a rush.

My point with PD is that they released a pretty tepid game and then released about a billion content updates and actually made it into a good game; hence, a rushed game isn't forever ruined.

Sorry. I thought you were just referring to the super long gestation of GT5 which when launched got called out by some for being the just the PS2 games but in HD. All credit to the guys for sticking with it though and yeah, absolutely proof that games can improve after release but the release version itself was a still quite a muted affair in some circles desipte the long delays. Of course it helps if you have a decent online service via which to deliver the content.

That Miyamoto statement whilst true at the time is starting to lose significance in the modern day. I guess it utimately depends on what the problems are as to whether it can be fixed with a delay of the title as it stands or whether it needs binning entirely.

3 way tie for Top 10 software sold by platform as well. 3 vita, 3 PS3 and 3 3DS games.

A surprising week for sales, I wonder if the Vita can keep it up with this weeks releases.

Games out this week:

Vita:

Nobunaga game

Two Steins Gate visual novels

3DS:

Super Robot Wars

I'm guessing 3DS will retake the lead next week, but Vita is still suffering from stocking problems (seriously Sony, the thing was nearly dying a couple of weeks ago, how can you drop the price without adequate stock?) so maybe it can keep going at its current pace.

Someone on GAF brought up a good point. Monster Hunter 4 was originally due for release around now, so the whole thing is strategically valid for Sony to have tried to take steam out of it.

It's definitely one of the main things they capitalised on, but like I said earlier in the topic, they clearly timed this price cut very well

Whether it holds beyond April or not I'm unsure of myself, but I think this month has been carefully timed by Sony as a good time to pounce and I think it might pay off in the mean time. Nintendo has a slightly dry month this month on both 3DS and Wii U.

Also, those Wii U sales aren't looking too healthy right now. Just a couple weeks left to go until DQX and Game & Wario kick some life into it.

Maybe, maybe not. It wasn't like MH4 suddenly got delayed at the last minute - it was known to be delayed until summer last year which would have been more than enough time for Sony to either stop or start planning a price reduction for around now.

Also, Soul Sacrifice, the Monster Hunter clone, was due out at the end of last year and then got bumped to March so I suspect that is the real catalyst for the sales drop as Sony will be hoping it taps into that same crowd that helped sustain the PSP and make it successful - PSO2 landing around this time would have helped too. It also helps to explain why it wasn't a world wide reduction because there is nothing in the West to really promote alongside the machine right now.

And lets face it, even a price reduction wouldn't have upset MH4 sales as there are too many 3DSes out there already.

Such a shame that they grossly under-shipped FEA in the US. Hopefully it'll still have some legs at retail once they get the physical copies back in stores.

Despite this setback, I reckon that it still has a chance at becoming the best selling game in the series in the US!

Previous FE game LTDs for comparison's sake.

Fire Emblem = 393K (First week = 76K)

Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones = 247K (First week = 54K)

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance = 86K

It's crazy that still people are struggling to get it @ retail. They should of fixed the problem by now.

Also the Nintendo PR suggests Wii U sales are bad.

Wii U sales are supposedly around 69K according to the guys on GAF.

The fact that it has gone up from January lends credence to that theory of the January NPD sales being crushed by mass returns by scalpers.

Yes it is. Mind you though, thankfully the Wii U has actual games (yes, games!) being released in March in all territories so hopefully this will help light a fire up the Wii U's arse.

Hopefully with the software drought coming to an end, so too will the declining sales.

The Lego game could do pretty well. Looking at the sales over the last 2 months you can see why ubisoft pulled Rayman Legends. Rayman stuggles to sell at the best of times and I see why they made the decision to pull it when the wii u install base is so low right now.

Yeah, I read that it did less than 10k. Whilst I suspect it might do a bit better than most digital games due to the convenience of always having it with the 3DS, there is no way it's so high as to move it into the "acceptable" category. And I'm sure they would have mentioned it, like FE, if it had done.

Now I know the BT games tend to be slow burners/evergreen and eschew the giant opening/fast tail off model but I think this really does highlight who is buying the 3DSes in America right now and it's still only the more dedicated gamers.

Being $29.99 certainly doesn't help either when you can get alternatives for cheap/free on mobile devices which also have the benefit of being a device you always tend to keep about your person to enable quick play sessions in your downtime regardless of where you are.

Wii u fit will be the next one to show how much the casual audience has moved on. I would like to think Nintendo recognise this and realise that audience just isn't there anymore but I'm sceptical.

To be fair, the US was always Brain Training 1 & 2's worst selling region. It should fare much better in Europe.

Nintendogs & Cats didn't hit the heights of its predecessor, but it has done at least over 2 million worldwide so far (most of that being in Europe - just like the original) so that's nothing to scoff at.

New Art Academy is also doing pretty well (probably nearing 1 million WW at this point), so while I don't expect it to be the big massive 10-20+ million seller that the original 2 games were, I still expect it to do quite well in Europe :)

The US might have been the worst of the 3 main regions, but even that is one heck of a drop off. The 3DS version, allegedly, did sub 10k in 3 weeks on sale whereas the first Brain Age on the DS did 120k in the same time frame so sales are down by over 90% for the same period. That's got to raise some eyebrows in the Nintendo camp concerning just who it is that are buying 3DSs and should also be factored in when designing these sort of games for the Wii U too. They've been quite adamant that same market that powered the Wii to success is there when nearly ever armchair quarterback begs to differ - and even those in the press too. Neither one has been yet to truly proven right but the signs aren't good so far for Nintendo.

As for Nintendogs and Cats, that had the benefit of being one of the few launch games that wasn't a port (and most of the ports were bad ones too)... even if it hadn't moved on much from the first game. I'm not sure if that had been released today that it would be hitting those numbers even with the higher install base.

Some UK Wii U sales numbers, as well as all the other consoles, have arrived via Gaf.

I would go more in depth but I'm posting from my phone.

The Wii U was really struggling in Feb. Of course the lack of any compelling software doesnt help things. This months titles ( Lego, Monster Hunter, Need for Speed ) surely have to cause a slight increase. Right?
