Borderlands 2 is in development at Gearbox Software, Eurogamer understands.

 

We've heard an announcement from publisher 2K Games will be made soon.

 

A source close to the game told Eurogamer the Gearbox-developed shooter will release on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 next year.

 

Borderlands 2 has been rumoured for months now. In April Borderlands 2 was spotted on a game developer's online CV – sparking speculation that the sequel will be announced at E3 in June.

 

Following that revelation, Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford told Eurogamer the Duke Nukem Forever developer had every intention of revisiting the Borderlands franchise at some point in the future.

 

"I can tell you that myself and everyone at Gearbox LOVES Borderlands and we have been absolutely thrilled at the reception it's gotten from our customers and the fact that it's sold over four million units now," he said.

 

"So you can see that we supported the game like mad with lots of great DLC and you can imagine that we're going to want to do a lot of things with Borderlands in the future.

 

"But we've only announced what we've announced. If we haven't announced it, it doesn't exist.

 

"Plans and efforts towards the future always exist with a forward looking studio like Gearbox, of course," he continued, "but brainstorming and blue sky research and development should never be allowed to be construed into a customer promise.

 

"A customer promise should not be made until that promise becomes sufficiently clear and ready and the commitment is there to deliver upon the promise."

 

The 2009 co-op fuelled shooter was a hit with critics and gamers, and publisher 2K Games has described a sequel as "a no-brainer". Eurogamer's Borderlands review looted an 8/10.

 

2K had not responded to Eurogamer at the time of publication.

I have high hopes for this game. But I hope it isn't the kind of sequel which extends the previous formula without building on it enough (eg Infamous 2) because I really want to see a fair few changes and improvements.

 

Ah who am I kidding, as long as it has split-screen co-op, I'm sold.

Borderlands 2 details emerge

 

New Borderlands 2 details have emerged from US magazine Game Informer (via Gematsu).

 

The 2012 FPS, like Borderlands, supports four-player co-op, but this time the protagonists from the first game are NPCs.

 

So, four new characters are available to play as. The first is Salvador, the Gunzerker, a stocky bloke who can dual-wield any weapon in the game.

 

Eridium is the new game's currency, and is used to improve weapon and vehicle statistics. The first game's three-branch skill tree returns.

 

Dynamic story missions aim to improve storytelling. The narrative is shaped around your approach to an objective.

 

NPCs are improved. They will converse with the player character in a more interactive manner. Enemy AI is greatly improved.

 

As previously mentioned there are all new weapons, but all of the guns in the first game have been scrapped. Vehicles are more varied. One shown is called the Bandit Technical.

 

Oh, and of course, amusing/annoying robot Claptrap is back

One improvement I want to hear about (unless they're bundling it in with enemy AI), is the way enemies react to being hit with weapons. In the first game, they would just wade through bullets as though they had no effect. Missiles and rocket launchers were poor weapons because they didn't really knock enemies back, and didn't have much of an impact.

 

Glad to hear some of the storytelling/NPC interaction is being improved upon :)

I would definitely prefer much fewer guns with more defined differences. There were great guns in Borderlands, but I found that I was only interested in about 5% of them. I typically had a fire SMG with high damage multiplier, an alien weapon and a shotgun and those would take down pretty much anything. Making sure you had a good mix of ammo types meant you didn't need to worry so much about range or high powered weapons. Especially if you had Bloodwing as well.

 

Machine guns were too inaccurate, snipers and pistols were great in the first half of the game but just too slow at bringing multiple mobs down compared to their DPS counterparts later on. I found rockets to be pretty much universally useless.

Yeah I think they need to work out how to make randomised loot more interesting because most of it in the original was just the same guns with minor variations on multipliers and rate of fire. I think making the brands more distinct, with specialist roles is what they're going for.

 

Rockets were weird. I never found much use for them either but Brick has an entire tree for explosives so that must work. Bit like sniper rifles in that the Hunter is really the only one who gets anything out of them.

 

And definitely more weird stuff generally. The shotgun that fired a salvo of rockets was fun (if too silly to really work) I'd like to see more of that.
