Posted December 17, 2005 Might I also suggest, if you're into 'special' movies, Mulholland Drive from David Lynch. It's disturbing and takes you to some kind of alternate universe. I also enjoyed Spy Game. I love Cold War and China/Nam spy movies and this one is as good as they get. Redford is an agent who's on his last day of work and he's confronted with one of his pupils (Pitt) being emprisoned in China. Posted December 18, 2005 Really depends what kind of films you enjoy but here are some of my faves. Star Wars - The original trilogy. My fave films ever, just amazing stuff. Terminator 2. Probably the greatest action film ever. Leon. A great action film with a great story. Das Boot. A very good war film, not some gung ho American drivel. Team America. Fucking hilarious. Posted December 18, 2005 Donnie Brasco is awesome for a few reasons; gangsters, al pacino and johnny depp. These three reasons are usually enough to see any movie alone. Posted December 18, 2005 I've noticed a few Kevin Spacey films, so I'll add K-Pax to the list. On top of that, I really liked The Matrix (numero uno), mostly for it's cool fight scenes but also for the sci-fi ideas. Event Horizon appalled me, but it's good. The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile are very good. I also loved the new War of the Worlds because of the social and psychological aspects of it, not for the sci-fi. I saw a movie a bit ago called Code 46 which sort of reminded me of Lost In Translation, except for the fact that I was deeply shaken by the former. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Well i'm no good at thinking on the spot, but I am thinking of a comedy noir that isn't contemporary at all -- Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid which has Steve Martin in and isn't too shabby. But again, L.A. Cnfidential if you haven't seen that as it's great. Another Kevin Spacey film! The guy's a legend. Big Lebowski is totally in teh vein of those private-eye stories too. .. But new recommendations? Hard to say :P things like Minority Report and Blade Runner could be considered, but I'm sure you've seen these already. Memento could be considered contemporary noir, but to be honest once you get over the gimmick the first time round it's not as good a movie. Matchstick Men - Check that out. It's about con artists and has Nick Cage in and Sam Rockwell Jr. and it's the movie which made me actually sit up and realise that Cage is actually a good actor. Great film. While i'm here... Young Frankenstein with Gene Wilder playing a distant relative of the famous Doctor. It's a nice comedy that anyone who's seen the original Frankenstein movies should watch. A couple of scorsese films have been mentioned (Goodfellas, Casino), I think After Hours is one worth seeing. Not the best film ever but weird enough to watch at least once. Taxi Driver is disturbing enough to see too - Ash that's for you if you've not seen it. Not so much Noir but it fits, I reckon. and of course Raging Bull, about the rise and fall of the boxer LaMotta, definately a film to see for anyone who wants to direct movies. That's it. There are certainly loads more movies worth mentioning, but I just based myself on what I personally have in stock at the moment. Intense: Solaris (Totally knocked my socks off with its gripping soundtrack) Das Boot (We saw this one 3 times in film school, nuff said) Hotel Rwanda (Should have gotten at least 1 oscar for best actor) The Crow (Completely justified revenge film, Brandon Lee died while making the film) Apocalypse Now Redux (Insane war reality, watch the soldiers eyes, so loaded up on acid) Leaving Las Vegas (Nicolas Cage's best role) Aaah, life is sweet: La Meglio Gioventu (Italy roars for 6 hours straight! Truly a must see!!!) Bin Jip (Silent love poem) Whale Rider (Beatiful Australian Maori tribe film) Sideways (Funny, down to earth midlife film) Before Sunset (Beautifull nostalgia, one of my fave romances) Billy Elliot (Aah, dancing billy ) High Fidelity (This is THE guy film!)
