OMG lol is in the dictionary

Recommended Posts

LOL and OMG are now officially part of the English language, along with several other acronyms. Means Rez is now mostly grammatically correct. But they also added ♥... I think it's weird that they added a symbol as a word. I also don't like it. I think words should be composed of letters or it will start becoming needlessly complicated when other symbols get thrown in.

FYI, It’s official, the Oxford English Dictionary has embraced LOL as part of the English Language. OMG… you may be thinking. Well, OMG made the cut too!

These aren’t the only initialisms included in the Oxford Dictionary. IMHO, LMAO, TTYL, TMI, and BFF are already part of our language. Yes, it’s true, we actually text with proper grammar.

Also, for the first time in Oxford’s 127 year history, a symbol has been added to the dictionary. Yep, ♥ is apparently now a word. Back to hieroglyphics we go! Must be all those I♥NY shirts..

The dictionary says that IMHO stands for "in my humble opinion". Does this mean that I can no longer use it to say "in my honest opinion"?

I thought it was always humble (AKA a prick), not honest anyway?

But it spells a dark day for humans now. Now chavvy people are within the English language... Assuming they're not already in there, soon "luv" and "bbz" will be in there.

Love to see a CV with some of this stuff on it.

If my arch nemesis 'lyk' gets in there, I'll burn down the whole of Oxford to make sure that thing never gets published. : peace:

People do write CVs (and covering letters) like that.

Don't see the problem with this. Seeing as English is a live language and these phrases and symbol are used thousands of times every day, it makes sense.

I don't understand the symbol.

This is the only one?

Why?

Is it because of how much it's used or is it the impact?

Because surely a peace sign or a swastika should be in it as well?

It's true, we should all bow down to the laziness of the kids of today.

Soon subtitles on TV will say:

"i luv u babe dont 4get da luv"

"i luv u2 bbz"

"heres sum bling brap i bort from da shp"

"luks fukin gr8"

But no one actually says lol and omg out loud do they? It's just short-form for when you're typing... Anyone who actually says lol instead of laughing should just be shot.

As for ♥... that isn't a fucking word. The dictionary is for words. This is too stupid.

All three are in the dictionary. You don't have to use Google to be able to google.

Thankfully none of my friends say it, though I make a point not to surround myself with idiots.

What is the world coming to.

Yes, now it is official that Rez is grammatically correct. I for one, well i don't like that these "words (if they can be classed as words) are in the dictionary. If i see a C.V with any of these words in, i will burn it.

And, i'll join Ramar if "lyk" gets in. Can't stand that word either.

OMG and LOL are fine, and should be.

The heart symbol is a bit "...", but I'm not totally against it.

Indeed. Just because these words are in the dictionary doesn't mean you have to use them.

Well, it was about time lol got into the dictionary. Yes, I've heard people using it. It just melds so well with everyday language, and actually sounds the part (your mouth naturally smiles/grins when you say it, and it does sound like a laugh).

I have no comment on the other abbreviations being said.

Also, lol still doesn't pass the Firefox spellcheck, lol.
