Murr Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 E3 almost came and went without any news about a Wii successor. Thankfully Japan's Nihon Keizai Shumbun was on the prowl. The financial paper managed to get some hints about Nintendo's next system straight from the person who probably knows best, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata. As part of a feature covering 3D games in its Thursday morning edition, the paper asked Iwata if Nintendo would be bringing 3D support to Wii. Iwata's response was, "If you display a 3D image, the image quality becomes extremely bad, so we'd probably do it with the next system. We're thinking that the timing should be once the 3D television adoption rate crosses the 30% mark." That's probably a ways off given that 3D televisions are only now arriving to the market. But it does seem like a strong hint that a future Nintendo console could have 3D support. Actually, this looks like a sure thing given Iwata's stance on 3D. Iwata expressed great support for 3D games, telling the paper, "In the future, 3D will become the mainstream of gaming." So why is Iwata so big on 3D? It's actually not for wow factor. Instead, he has a more gameplay-oriented reason. "In 3D, it's easier to get a sense for position. In a game where the stages extend into the screen, it's surprisingly easier to control [compared to non 3D]. This is functionality for making games more pleasant to play, not just for show." Iwata also denied that Nintendo is trying to ride some sort of 3D boom with the 3DS hardware. Instead, he noted that Nintendo has been working on 3D for years now. "Nintendo had an eye the charms of immersive 3D for games and released a 3D game machine 15 years ago, but the technology was not ready," said Iwata in reference to the failed Virtual Boy system. "Two years back, we decided that we finally had the technology and parts to make a satisfying product. And that product was the 3DS, which seems to be receiving near unanimous praise at this year's E3. If 3DTV adoption rates are high enough, perhaps a 3D-ready console from Nintendo will draw similar praise at next year's show. Source - IGN.com Well make of that what you will. daftada Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 3D does seem quite likely. Didn't Iwata or Miyamoto say that the GameCube was capable of outputting 3D visuals? I'm sure I read that in an interview a few months back. Also, before the Wii was fully revealed there was a lot of talk about a Japanese gaming company pouring money into 3D displays that didn't require a TV, pairing up with NASA. Iwata even commented once around the same time that the 'Revolution' didn't need a monitor.
Ashley Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 It also kind of suggests the next Wii won't be HD but rather slightly-better-than-Wii-but-with-3D graphics.
... Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 3D is already possible with the Wii, it just hasn't been done yet. Everyone here has already seen this video, but people seem to forget, so here it goes:

marcel Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 good to hear that nintendo isnt taking the backseat with tech with the successor to the wii. With the wii processor power they where unable to make the wii 720p compatible with an update (simular that the 360 got an update to unlock 1080p).
Cube Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 I'm pretty sure that the NES could run 3D if someone wanted to do so. It's all in the software. The head tracking is something that Microsoft should copy for Kinect.
Ren of Heavens Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 I'm expecting graphics on par with 360 and PS3.
mcj metroid Posted June 18, 2010 Posted June 18, 2010 Lol this is FAR too early to tell. I'm pretty sure that the NES could run 3D if someone wanted to do so. It's all in the software. . They've had demoes of many 3ds playing NES titles on the showfloor at e3. I posted the link on the 3ds thread but I think the post about live achievements eclipsed it somewhat
... Posted June 18, 2010 Posted June 18, 2010 Head tracking is very different from what we're talking about though. I know it's a different tech, but it effectively gives you a window into a really three-dimensional world. It's not holographic projection or anything of the sort (and I don't know how the 3DS does its 3D, haven't read much about it yet), but this video clearly shows a 3D game environment with the Wii's current tech. And no game has tried this yet.
Choze Posted June 18, 2010 Posted June 18, 2010 3D is a given for any future machine after the PS3. 30% penetration is very safe. Which means you wont be seeing the next Wii at e3 2011 or 2012.
D_prOdigy Posted June 18, 2010 Posted June 18, 2010 I'd rather we just didn't go through the motions with all this 3D shit. I can just about look past it on 3DS due to the screen. Would Nintendo REALLY advocate going down a similar 3D path as PS3 mere days after condemning those god-awful glasses?

How contradictory. Besides the implication of the PS3 as some grand thing certain to usher in the tech, if Market Penetration stays so low that we won't even hear about Nintendo's next console at 2012, the PS3 will have hardly done it's job.

Shino Posted June 18, 2010 Posted June 18, 2010 Lol, either the Wii2 comes in 2020 or it wont have 3D.
