Guy Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 Nintendo know how popular a MMORPGHIJKLMNOPQRPG would be but they'll never give it to us. Years back a few people were trying to put together a really promising Pokemon Online RPG but I think Nintendo shut it down with a cease and desist. People bemoan Pokemon because it is literally a tarted up remake of the same game with 100 new creatures every time. Picking from three starters, battling through eight gyms and some squad of baddies, elite four? How many times have we done that before? They add a few new things every time that in my opinion overcomplicate the series or in the case of the abysmal Ruby and Sapphire take away some of the best elements of earlier titles. It could be an issue that people consider Pokemon games a missed opportunity to be something so much better than they are? I dunno. That's probably how I feel. I honestly don't spend forever thinking about it.
Serebii Posted April 16, 2010 Author Posted April 16, 2010 The thing is, if you think about it properly, a MMORPG would not fit Pokémon at all
mcj metroid Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 Yet people dont moan when Call of Duty, Mario, Zelda, Halo, Final Fantasy, Fifa, Bomberman etc. release new games with the original premise/genre, a few new bits and shinier graphics Double.Standard. these games have evolved into 3d.. pokemon hasn't
Nolan Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 these games have evolved into 3d.. pokemon hasn't Except for the ones that started in 3D.
Serebii Posted April 16, 2010 Author Posted April 16, 2010 these games have evolved into 3d.. pokemon hasn't Oh?
mcj metroid Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 ***Pokemans. You make a good point, MCJ. I think there's a risk of devaluing some Pokemon if you have so many, such as when you mentioned the Legendaries. With the battle animations, are you saying the animations should be better, or quicker, or just turned off altogether? no not turned off of course.. I just find the battles tedious I'm not sure it's a personal thing. The best i've seen on the ds is final fantasy iv or better still this I know the video quality is shocking but I'd love to see pokemon go down this route... With final fantasy there is a geniune feel of stretegy during the battles rather than 4 moves or flee. You have way more moves, 5 in every team fighting together and yet the battles feel quick. Also there is an auto battle which Im not sure how they could implement into pokemon. I also feel there is a big missed oppertunity with teams in pokemon.2 on 2 battles are fun I find. Its kinda tough to come up with ideas for the pokemon battle... I'd like to see these " more intense battles" in black and white but whats the betting it'll be a few different camera angles of a still still image. Oh? hey thats not out yet and its not 3d... yes its got 3d elements but most 3d games don't stick you to a 2d grid where you can only move up down left and right, offering battles IN complete 2d with a main character that IS a 2d sprite.. its still a 2d game with 3d elements.. its barely more 3d than this least he can move diagonally. don't get me wrong though it still looks great from those shots.
Guy Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 The thing is, if you think about it properly, a MMORPG would not fit Pokémon at all I only really look at World of Warcraft and base my ideas for a MMORPG Pokemon game around that. Everyone is a trainer but you can specialise in other "classes" like breeding and stuff. Pokemon in the wild like monsters, battle or catch them when they're weak with point and click commands. Certain Legendary Pokemon would simply be unavailable to catch and would instead take part in various storylines and dungeon quests. Celebi for example. Certain Pokemon can obviously only be used in certain areas. You're not going to send out or see a Magikarp in the middle of a forest, only out at sea or in water. I don't have the specifics all worked out, but I do think it could really work well. I'd certainly love to play a game like that in my lifetime.

Based on these Black & White screenshots, with curves and 3D, they have scrapped that. It also is 3D. It has 3D models, 3D perspectives, 3D depth therefore it is 3D
mcj metroid Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 Based on these Black & White screenshots, with curves and 3D, they have scrapped that. It also is 3D. It has 3D models, 3D perspectives, 3D depth therefore it is 3D 3d perspectives? Like you're saying I can see the back a pokemon centre for instance? change the camera angle? go into first person ? it's not proper 3d and to me seen as everyone is still staring left and right waiting for a person to walk into their line of sight, it looks like its still on the 2d grid. But to me this is about as 3d as grand theft auto chinatown wars. Pokemon will be 3d when 3d actually adds something to the gameplay..it adds nothing here. however I'll wait till I see videos. I understand however this is the best graphics the ds CAN do without making the game date to hell but i'd hardly call it a 3d game yet neither would I call it a 2d game.. It's stuck in psuedo-3d or 2.5 if you will. It's just not a 3d game. Final fantasy 4 is a 3d game..It has full 3d battles, 3d characters models and the environments are 3d and it looks great. Only 2d parts are the overworld map.
Ashley Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 I'd like a crazy amazingly detailed 3D pokemon MMORPG as much as I'd like a sex with Kristen Bell and an end to ReZ's comedy but I'm sure all of these things won't be as good as you imagine them in your head.
Guy Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 If I had a choice between Bell, the end of ReZourceman's comedy and the Pokemon MMORPG... I would totally ring the Bell.
Guy Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 I'd ring that Bell hard and loud into the night. Now back to family friendly discussion... I like the idea that a Pokemon EmEmOhArrPeeGee would let you ride your larger Pokemon around when you fly or surf. Who doesn't want to soar through the skies burning an occasional village on the back of a Charizard? Regarding the games this thread is actually meant to discuss, I think it's going to take more than a graphical overhaul to make people care anymore. I only picked up Heart Gold and Soul Silver for the nostalgia and I got bored of that after 50 or so hours of slow battlin'.
Serebii Posted April 16, 2010 Author Posted April 16, 2010 Why are people so insistant on massive change. It'd destroy the god damn franchise
ReZourceman Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 Why are people so insistant on massive change. It'd destroy the god damn franchise I'm not. I love my Pokermanz the way it is and will be more than content with 100+ new Pokermanz. TBH I'd love 150 more. *Drool* And I really really want it to be longer. I can't see why it couldn't be 16+ badges in the main story. Maybe even a gym leader for each Pokemon type.
Emasher Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 (edited) The thing is, if you think about it properly, a MMORPG would not fit Pokémon at all I'm not actually suggesting they make any sort of MMO game. Maybe a multiplayer area or something like that, but never a full MMO. But if you look at the way the series is evolving, its quite clear that Nintendo/GF are starting to bring it towards 3D, just looking at the Black and White screenshots. As for them outsourcing the games, they've done that before, they'll probably do it again. Maybe not the main ones, but if we see anything like the Gamecube RPGs again, I doubt they'll be as restrictive in the exploration. Pokemon has probably been Nintendo's largest revenue source for software over the years. A decent 3D adventure will almost certainly happen one day. Maybe they're not ready for it yet, but especially with the way Black and White are looking at the moment, I'm certain it will happen one day, one way or another. Massive change would far from destroy the franchise. Changing the basic gameplay mechanics might, but changing up the story, and the general progression through the game would surely increase sales, as long as they get it right. There are tons of success stories for series that were changed up. Look at Metroid Prime, or Mario 64. Aside from having the same basic ideas as the previous games, the way they played was very different. The new direction was a success, not because they were meant to be in 3D, but because talented designers worked on them, and reimagined the games to work with the changes that needed to be made to modernize each series at the time. It had nothing to do with Mario and Metroid being meant for 3D since the NES games. They were designed to work in 2D, just like Pokemon was. Pokemon just like them, can be redesigned to work in 3D, as long as you have good enough designers working on the project. Edited April 16, 2010 by Emasher

I think it's a rather hard decision. I'd try and go for a compromise restrict ReZ's comedy to even numbered days, and get something equal to half.

CoroCoro hinted at it. However, I don't get why people think 3D is the be-all and end-all of games. Why can't we have nice 2D games anymore? Surely New Super Mario Bros Wii has proven this.
Emasher Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 I'm not saying ditch 2D entirely. But we haven't even really seen a true 3D pokemon game. Pokemon XD and Colosseum while 3D in terms of graphics, were still very much 2D from a level design standpoint. In all honesty it would be great if they went back to basic sprites (like in the 3rd generation) for the handheld games, but added more detail, and style, ect. 4 Swords Adventures is a good example of how to do something like that right.
mcj metroid Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 Why are people so insistant on massive change. It'd destroy the god damn franchise its just a bit of fun banter. Its fun to dream about what may never be.
Debug Mode Posted April 17, 2010 Posted April 17, 2010 So, rumour has it when it gets to Black and White in the anime, Ash and crew are going bye bye?
Serebii Posted April 17, 2010 Author Posted April 17, 2010 So, rumour has it when it gets to Black and White in the anime, Ash and crew are going bye bye? No. That was a gross mistranslation. All the original article said was that the DP saga is ending and the Black & White one is beginning. Kotaku and anyone who got it from there decided this to mean Ash is leaving. This is not the case.
Debug Mode Posted April 17, 2010 Posted April 17, 2010 It made no difference to me, so I was kinda hoping Ash died or something and Pikachu lived on to avenge him.. that and the fan boy rage would be ever so delicious.
Serebii Posted April 17, 2010 Author Posted April 17, 2010 As we reported on Thursday, the Legendary Beasts to be given in Japan this summer are to hold a special secret. Due to our knowledge of HeartGold & SoulSilver, we concluded that this was in Pokémon Black & White. The pre-ordering for tickets for the movie began today in Japan and yaminokame got his hands on his. With the tickets came a pamphlet that stated that the legendary beasts do unlock something within Pokémon Black and Pokémon White. What they unlock is still unknown, but this does confirm that Pokémon Black and White will be compatible for trade in some way with Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold & SoulSilver. Whether this will be similar to the Pal Park in those games or the Time Machine method from Gold, Silver & Crystal remains to be seen. We'll post more information as and when it comes.
