The general wandering around is less of an issue - it was during the combat that my concerns over it's suitability were raised. The guy was rolling but you can't actually see what he's rolling into until the camera is forced to snap to the back of him.

In a way, watching reminded me of the combat in No More Heroes, art style aside of course, and that could have done with a better camera too.

From how it seemed to me the camera problems were mainly as a result of the player constantly rolling about, I think if he'd stayed on his feet a bit more we'd have gotten a better idea as to how the camera works... but it does seem like it could do with some fine tuning.

Gamers Impressions:

The way the game is paced and structured, with carefully planned encounters and no randomness at all, the designers pretty much knew how strong you'd be at each encounter and balanced them accordingly. Also, with the way the levels and EXP scale, a party member ten or fifteen levels below the main character will be up to snuff after one or two encounters, and always in time for boss battles.

It seems there are points in the game when you have several missions available and are free to choose which one to tackle first, but those are balanced accordingly as well from what I've seen. You're free to grind if you wish to do so, by using summoning points or visiting the arena, but that hardly has any effect on the difficulty of main story missions.

In that regard, Last Story is pretty much perfect. It feels really, really similar to Mass Effect 2 in many ways I think - except it has much more loot, and much cooler weapons and armor. I still very much prefer Xenoblade for the great environments, exploration and overall design, but I think many people, even those who normally wouldn't enjoy JRPGs for more or less valid reasons, would have a lot of fun with Last Story. Those two games are pretty much polar opposites in any way (except for the loot, and the fact that they are two of the most competent Wii titles), yet they both differ from JRPG cliche very much. One is basically a single player MMO, while the other is very streamlined - like I wrote, a Japanese Mass Effect. And both rank at the very top of this gens JRPGs, in my humble opinion.

When I watched the town gameplay, I started thinking of it kind of like a Japanese Mass Effect and I'm glad to see that isn't entirely off the track. Really hope this is localised.

Funny how it's compared to Xenoblade in that preview...and both games have a very small chance of ever coming near here.

Heard a rumour week 2 sales were way down (something more like 20,000). Not sure if it's true. Not surprised if it is.

I'd actually be interested in seeing how much the drop in sales this week compares respectively to the drops of the other new games out the same week.

This is one area which is killing Japanese markets big time. Japanese players play them straight through and then trade them in before the next shipment comes in, being cheaper, and cover/disk all in excellent condition and price cheaper then a brand new copy. It's hitting a lot of franchises hard.

Well after reading those rumoured sales, I had to search a little because I just found that hard to believe, a game completely sold out with only a few days on sale, could go from that to 20k or so.

Turns out this is from a VGCharts preview that posted it's sold around 20k. I'll just wait and see till tomorrow and how it's turned out.

Isn't it more likely that 20k is the remainder of the firSt shipment? I don't think Nintendo have shipped the second batch yet.

The second shipment has been in for a while, yeah, it sucks. Japanese gaming in general is declining rapidly. Only ones that are safe for the moment are New Mario Bros, Monster Hunter, Pokemon and Dragon Quest. Everything else is basically on the decline.

Disappointing.

How is that disappointing though? From what i've read this is a full on RPG; it's not really aiming at the Wii audience.

Glad Miles Edgeworth 2 is at the top :D

^You can't honestly believe that's all the hardcore gamers that own a Wii that would play RPG's.

It's the same scenario as the DS. If, on the DS, something like a port of an old hardcore RPG like Dragon Quest comes out, it sells a shitton. If a new RPG IP comes out that's high quality with great staff and a good concept, it sells like shit.

The hardcore gamers on both systems are there, they just have a massive apathy towards new IP's.

This is very disappointing, and not just for The Last Story. Valkyria Chronicles 3 has dropped 83% as well. :(
