Whiffste Posted January 17, 2010 Posted January 17, 2010 Hey guys i recently had to get a new wii because my old wii stop reading disc:weep:. So i went and bought a shiny black new one. But i went to redownload all my vc games and i can't. Is there any way of getting these games back. any help would be awesome. thanks guys!!!
D_prOdigy Posted January 17, 2010 Posted January 17, 2010 Unfortunately, you can't. With a new console, you've also got a new online 'account', so it won't have any recollection that you've already downloaded those games. And there's no way of transferring your games between two systems either. You could ring up Nintendo and see if they'll have the games transferred over, but they're not obliged to do that. It's an unfair world.
david.dakota Posted January 17, 2010 Posted January 17, 2010 You could ring up Nintendo and see if they'll have the games transferred over, but they're not obliged to do that. Really? You've purchased the license for the games, so regardless of the fact its a new Wii, he should be able to continue using these games.
D_prOdigy Posted January 17, 2010 Posted January 17, 2010 Really? You've purchased the license for the games, so regardless of the fact its a new Wii, he should be able to continue using these games. He can continue. On the Wii they're on - Nintendo would have fixed that for free.
Emasher Posted January 17, 2010 Posted January 17, 2010 Yes, but it probably says something in the terms of use to get them out of transferring the games if they don't want to. The Wii Shop Channel isn't based around an account, its based off the console itself. There's no way of logging in to get your old stuff. Your only option is to ring up Nintendo and see if they'll take care of it for you.
Whiffste Posted January 17, 2010 Author Posted January 17, 2010 thanks guys ill give them a ring 2morro. i dont think they will do anything tho. thanks for the advice.
Emerald Emblem Posted January 17, 2010 Posted January 17, 2010 It's yet another niggling drawback of the Wii's online capabilities. The only fault I can say the Wii has besides the oversaturated market of cheap cash in titles.
S.C.G Posted January 17, 2010 Posted January 17, 2010 (edited) Hmm how many games are we talking about? if it's only 3 or 4 then maybe best just to buy them again - would cost less time and money than getting the old, unreliable one repaired - but if it's like 10 - 15 + VC titles then yeah... get it fixed. I shudder to think what'd happen if my Wii broke... fingers crossed it never happens as I've accumulated a *few* VC titles from writing VC Weekly over the years. Edited January 17, 2010 by S.C.G
Hero-of-Time Posted January 17, 2010 Posted January 17, 2010 A guy over at Gaf had the same problem the other day. He had to email/phone Nintendo and asked to have his stuff transfered over. He explained what VC titles he had bought and proved to them he was telling the truth by giving his Club Nintendo account info ( some VC titles show up on there correct? ). They replied saying that they needed his old and new Wii serial numbers and a copy of the reciept for the new console. The topic disappeared by the time I checked back so I don't know how it all turned out. He was in Italy if that makes any difference. Nintendo + Online =
dazzybee Posted January 17, 2010 Posted January 17, 2010 I'm doing the very same thing tomorrow. It's a disgrace it really is. Nintendo better sort it out. As Hero said, all our purchases are on our accounts so it can be proved. On Xbox and PS3, can you redownload your content if you get another machine?

With the PS3, you can redownload anything on up to I think 5 systems, you just need to sign in with your PSN account.
Shorty Posted January 17, 2010 Posted January 17, 2010 Aye, same for 360 you just log in and the games download straight away. You can even just go round to your friend's, log in on their console and hey presto, games downloaded (only access them on one console at a time, though). This is really the main thing I'd like to see in the next Nintendo console. Above and beyond "HD", I'd like to see them join the modern era in terms of "friend codes", hard drives... and all that stuff that we should just be taking for granted.
dazzybee Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 Okay. Called nintendo, very nice and helpful; they are sending a free post label to send both wiis to them with which they will transfer over all my data. Bit annoying, but I'll live!
dazzybee Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 Nintendo really need to sort this system out though. What if I sold my old wii for the new one? Then what would they do?
Daft Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 I'm more thinking about what happens with the successor to the Wii. For their own sake, why didn't they make it simpler - it can't help them having it like this. I know with stuff locked to consoles, like Singstar on the PS3, you can just call up Sony and they transfer rights over the phone. Same with the 360. (I've had experiences with both )
Emasher Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 If they do allow you to transfer data, I bet they'll sell a kit for $25-$40 to do it, and not ship them until a month after launch, with them being sold out everywhere for another few months. And it will just be a USB cable, but it will be custom in some way so you have to use their cable (like Wii Speak in that way).
Ike Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 Nintendo should just link the Wii to your Club Nintendo account and force everyone to register for an account, they already have half the system implemented since your purchases and are already linked. Then all you have to do is link your Club Nintendo account to the Wii and transfer your VC/Wiiware/DSWare games over.
Tellyn Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 There should definitely be an account that allows you to carry your purchases across. Iwata said that the Wii 2 would effectively be a fine-tuning of the Wii, therefore it should be backwards-compatible with everything we've purchased for the Wii. The many downloadable games I've bought will be rendered totally useless, since they're tied to the console.
Emasher Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 (edited) The Wii should have had a central account that all online stuff is tied to (Like PSN/XBL) from day one, or at least by the end of 2007 (as there weren't many online enabled games early on). Changing it at this point wouldn't make a lot of sense, as they'll probably have a new console out before long anyway. One thing they could do, would be to implement central online accounts on the new console, and have a way of logging into the account from your old Wii, just to tie the games to the account, and not be able to tie the games to another account after that, but I really don't think that's likely with the way they've been operating lately. Gentleben Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 This really has been an eye opener for me. I always assumed (Rather incorrectly) that your Club Nintendo account was tied to your shop channel purchases, regardless of what wii you had your account on.
dazzybee Posted January 25, 2010 Posted January 25, 2010 Okay, I'm going to send my Wiis, but I obviously want to get rid of my homebrew channel beforehand. What do I do?! Just delete it in the channels bit?!?! Also, has anyone done all this before? Swapped channels over? Will they swap over all my wi-fi enabled games too and thus all my DLC for Guitar Hero and Rock Band?

Don't worry, if Homebrew is on your Wii Nintendo will get rid of it for you, as for the DLC... they will probably fuck you over somehow by not moving it, claiming that they don't know how to because it isn't first party stuff Idk... *shrugs* never have this worry on the 360. I love Nintendo but they don't half make things difficult at times.

They transfer all downloadable content (including VC games and stuff), but you need to re-download them after. You need to specify that you want your saved data kept. They will not transfer over friend codes, as they are locked into the save file, and save files for most online games are locked to the machine. As for homebrew, I had it on my machine before it broke, but deleted it a few months before sending it in. Nothing happened.
dazzybee Posted January 25, 2010 Posted January 25, 2010 So simply deleting it will be fine? Good good. Bit disappointed about the online games. So I have to keep using my old wii to play Rock Band and stuff. Ridiculous. What would have happened if I sold it? All my DLC gone? I may contact activision and ea and tell them I've dowloaded all their games and now have a new machine, can they transfer them for me. Or let me redownload them for free.
