Blu-Ray without HD TV?

Well, not quite. The transfers are still higher quality than DVD so there would be a difference between the two. BD isn't just a high resolution DVD, just about every aspect of picture and sound quality has been improved. The special features are also much improved over those on DVD, they're more interactive and can be accessed at any time during the movie (allowing you to turn stuff like director commentary on or off without leaving the film).

Still, i'd say it's not worth buying. The players are still a little too expensive to warrant the purchase without a HDTV. I guess it depends how much you love your film, plenty of people buy £400 DVD players (and even more expensive) because they want to see their films at the best quality they can.

Don't buy a blu ray player until after you buy an HDTV. It's unlikely you'll really notice a big difference.

Also, buying one now so you have one when you get an HDTV isn't a good idea unless you're getting an HDTV soon. By the time you get an HDTV the prices for players will likely have dropped and there may be a newer version of the bluray spec out by then.

My laptop can play both and although its not a HD screen you can see the difference.

What res does your Laptop? I find it a bit unlikely that a manufacturer would release a laptop with a blu ray drive without a widescreen res supported.

1366x768 is 720p. It's the new standard resolution for 720p, as I heard it this is due to 1366x768 being easier to acheive than 1280x720 on a LCD screen.

The only modern laptops that don't have "HD" screens are ultraportables and netbooks that usually have 1024x768(or something similar), which is still higher than SD or ED.

As many have said, having a decent sized HDTV is pretty essential to Blu-ray.

Not really. I've got a Sharp 19" in my bedroom and the PQ is better than the 50" downstairs. As most sources will say, anything over 40" is really overkill.

A HDTV is great. Certainly for the quality angle. But never rush to get a cheap one (e.g Samsung or LG) or a cheap player. Best to save up abit more and get a nice one you will enjoy better.

In fact many argue the concept of a standalone player is outdated with the internet and all. People digest everyday media in many ways(youtube to torrent which dont have to be HD). PS3 for example caters to all of that as well as new twists.

Actually as most sources will say anything under 40" and your not going to see the added bonus of 1080p over 720p.

Well even if 1080p does not tickle your fancy that does not change the fact that 1080p tv are much higher quality than 720p ones. They will have better contrast, better colour, better connections, better motion handling, better details, better extras etc. They are also priced as such.

Samsung isn't a bad brand...well imo

Better contrast is a TV to TV basis, 720p or 1080p.

Better Color is in the same boat as contrast.

Better Connections? I'm not sure what you mean by this, do you mean like HDMI or Pc connections? Either way, a TV to TV basis again.

Better Motion handling, that's dependant on the refresh rate/response rate. Any plasma can handle highspeed, early LCDs pixelated. Current LCDs are much faster to combat pixelation in highspeed scenes.

Better Details, well your right here, seeing as how 1080p is over twice the size of 720p. It's just harder to see those differences on a small screen.

Better Extras? Like connections idk what you mean here, and can't even make assumptions this time.

No, but most manufacturers only do budget sets at 720p now. The top end sets (i.e. the ones with the better build quality, colour, contrast, etc.) are all 1080p. The Panasonic PX80 and Sony V4500 are the only exception to this rule that i can think of from this years releases.

That doesn't mean that all 1080p sets are better than their 720p counterparts, there are budget 1080p sets too.

You do know LG supply most of the panels for a lot of the other brands don't you?

Sharp provide the LCD panels for Pioneer's LCD TVs. Does this mean that Sharp sets are better than Pioneer ones? :indeed:

It doesn't matter who makes the panel, they are all built to the spec of the company who assemble the TV. LG don't necessarily use the best panels that they can manufacture in their own TVs, they use the best ones that they can afford. The panel itself doesn't matter that much any way, it's all about the picture processing. The market leaders in this area are Philips and Pioneer, both of them do fantastic things with fairly flawed technology. Their top-end sets are so much better than LG and Sharp's top-end sets and yet they use the same panels.

Samsung dont use the same panels Sony do. They are in a joint venture, using same factories, but their product lines are completely seperate. The Sony screens tend to vastly outclass Samsung.

Pioneer now use Panasonic plasma panels. But Pioneer are still superior. The Pioneer Kuro plasma is the reference tv. You wont find anything better. Panasonic are no slouch though.

Its annoying hearing sales men lying out of their teeth when trying to convince people to part with tv. There is a reason the cheap LG, Thomson or Samsung costs alot less. :heh:

Plasma is hot right now if you want the best quality.

also please dont judge high picture quality by watching Sky or Youtube. Thats more about how can this tv handle low quality video.

Don't be such a fucking toolshed; Samsung are a good brand. Just because you own a different brand it doesn't mean you should go around slagging off other ones to make you feel elite.

There are cheap models within brands but you can't just write Samsung off.
