Dante Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Ever since Nintendo's E3 press conference this year, much talk has been bandied about claiming the company has abandoned the hardcore gamer (or just "core gamer," as Nintendo likes to say). The company took its recent Media Summit event in San Francisco to directly reach out to the enthusiast press and hardcore gamers with several new titles like a Punch-Out! remake, the turn-based strategy game Fire Emblem DS, and a sequel to the Japanese shooter Sin and Punishment. But speaking with VentureBeat, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime laments that we gamers are never satisfied. "The gaming enthusiast that buys a tremendous amount of games is truly insatiable," Fils-Aime says. "As an example, in March, we launched Super Smash Bros. Brawl. In April, we launched Mario Kart. In later April, we launched Wii Fit. Then, in July, at E3, they say, 'where are the games?' They say they want the next Mario game. Super Mario Galaxy isn't even a year old yet." While we here at IGN Nintendo were pretty happy with the Media Summit last week, Reggie still appears exasperated with the core market. "We believe today that we have shown a plethora of games and genres that can satisfy the most casual to the most core. Even that doesn't seem like it's enough." IGN.Wii
Goron_3 Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 It's amazing how he considers Mario Kart and Wii fit games for the core gamer when you look at the tv adverts for the games (adverts showing grandads, fathers and kids playing mario kart isn't very 'hardcore' to me lol). Also, Wii fit, wasn't the whole point of that to broaden the gaming market and get parents and stuff to do some exercise. I'm sorry but you can't call that a core game alongside stuff like zelda and Metroid. Oh, Brawl was also toned down, a lot. I'm not complaining, but come on reggie, stop acting like these games were aimed at the core gamers when clearly you're trying to get everyone to play them. jeez.
darksnowman Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 He's right though. "Core gamers" are never content with the present, they are always anticipating the next big thing.
Ganepark32 Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Urgh.... I can't believe people are moaning off of the back of their Media Summits. Did they not see what was shown? Sin and Punishment 2 for crying out load and, although it doesn't appeal to me, a new Punch Out! Some people are just impossible to please. I mean if those two there couldn't make them happy then they might as well bugger off then. I almost crapped myself when S&P2 was announced and I'm sure others were as shocked and happy as me. Bah... no point wasting anymore breath on them. Go play/do something else if you weren't happy with what was shown at the Media Summit.
Darkspine S Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Thing is, they have to aim those adverts at the mainstream crowd because, unlike us, they know little about the game. Plus, it's not as if the adverts were screaming 'Hey, only Grandparents and Middle-aged people can play these games!' Reggie definitely has a point when he says Gaming fans are insatiable. Most people just don't realize how much time it takes to make a whole new game. Asking for a new main Mario title now is just stupid.
-gonzo- Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 It's amazing how he considers Mario Kart and Wii fit games for the core gamer when you look at the tv adverts for the games (adverts showing grandads, fathers and kids playing mario kart isn't very 'hardcore' to me lol). So when since has there been an age limit on playing Hardcore games? I plan on playing games until my Arms,Fingers,Eyes etc wont allow me to. So what age do you have to be to play Hardcore games?
Flaight Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 That's surely the "spokesman" side of Reggie Old habits die hard.
Hellfire Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Here we go again. Oh, Brawl was also toned down, a lot. I'm not complaining, but come on reggie, stop acting like these games were aimed at the core gamers when clearly you're trying to get everyone to play them. jeez. I'm just gonna give this little note, core gamers are a part of er... everyone.
Goron_3 Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 So when since has there been an age limit on playing Hardcore games?I plan on playing games until my Arms,Fingers,Eyes etc wont allow me to. So what age do you have to be to play Hardcore games? Yeah but i doubt my grandad could play like Super Mario kart, DD or even MK:DS and enjoy it as much. It's been very much made to suit casual gamers.
dwarf Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Well that is kind of admitting that Nintendo aren't making games with depth any more, or they are making few of them. 'Galaxy is only 1 year old' sorry but who plays galaxy for a year? How does that satisfy 'core' gamers. Complete BS he has just dug a hole.
Hellfire Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Yeah but i doubt my grandad could play like Super Mario kart, DD or even MK:DS and enjoy it as much. It's been very much made to suit casual gamers. While you like to tout that Nintendo has been toning down games, I don't see grandads playing MK Wii, Brawl, Prime, Galaxy or Wario. If your does, well, cool, but it's undeniable that these games are games that core gamers always want and it's also undeniable, at least for Mario and Mario Kart, that these games were always made for all people to play. But hey, whatever.
killer kirby Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 I always look at the so called 'hardcore' gamers as a bunch of babies....you give them something, and they will be happy for a couple of days playing with it, but then after that, throw it away and start crying because they want something else. This crying will stop when they have this new toy, and they will forget about everything about before and start playing with the new toy...and then the cycle continue's again.
Goron_3 Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 While you like to tout that Nintendo has been toning down games, I don't see grandads playing MK Wii, Brawl, Prime, Galaxy or Wario. If your does, well, cool, but it's undeniable that these games are games that core gamers always want and it's also undeniable, at least for Mario and Mario Kart, that these games were always made for all people to play. But hey, whatever. My grandad doesn't play MK but clearly they want the games to be easy enough for that demographic. Now, metroid prime 3, that game was perfect. Brilliant wii controls and it wasn't toned down at all (atleast from my experience, but i never completed MP1 and 2). Tbh, a lot of the blame lies in 3rd parties. Nintendo have new games coming but they take time to develop (they say it takes 2-3 years, but where are the games they started developing 2-3 years ago?) which is fair enough and now they are taking their time to expand the casual market. Unfortunately, Nintendo's 3rd party support has never been particularly strong after the N64 and the problems that has. Hopefully once Madworld and Conduit come out and HOPEFULLY sell well, we'll get more 3rd parties announcing games on the wii that are given big budgets.
Jonnas Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Reggie is right. Apparently, "Core" fans don't like games everyone else likes. Brawl, Galaxy, Metroid, Super Paper Mario, Fire Emblem, are all games that exist. You know, games not usually targetted at the "casual" market. And then there's "casual" games that can be enjoyable in their own right. And then there are the 3rd party games everyone likes to ignore (Zack and Wiki, No More Heroes, Sonic and the Rings, Boom Blox, NiGHTS, etc.). You know, that spokesperson that said 3rd party games don't sell on the Wii was also right.
D_prOdigy Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Well anyone that self-proclaims themselves to be "hardcore" gamers don't deserve to be listened to. It's always about the bloody 1st party games as well with these people. These same gamers that complain 3rd parties aren't doing enough to support Wii. This is sort of a general statement to anyone who thinks there aren't enough core games on Wii at the moment: Play through all Stars in Galaxy, beat Prime 3 on Hyper Mode and unlock everything in Brawl. After that, buy Zack and Wiki, PES 2008, No More Heroes, Okami, Boom Blox, de Blob, Scarface, SSX Blur, Godfather: Blackhand Edition, Eledees, Trauma Centre, Sonic, NiGHTS and Tiger 08. Do that, then we'll talk.
Mike Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Why do Nintendo keep saying that everyone's asking for a new Zelda and Mario? I've never seen anyone demanding new Mario or Zelda titles in the past six months, as we realise they take time to make. I want a new F-Zero, or a Starfox, or a Pikmin, but apart from the latter, Nintendo seems to want us forget they exist.
Shino Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Well that is kind of admitting that Nintendo aren't making games with depth any more, or they are making few of them.'Galaxy is only 1 year old' sorry but who plays galaxy for a year? How does that satisfy 'core' gamers. Complete BS he has just dug a hole. You missed the point, the problem isn't people playing Mario during a year, is people asking for a new one before a year of release. Although I don't think I ever saw someone ask for it either.
ShadowV7 Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Screw that, I want core games on the Wii. Not a slightly stripped down Smash or Mario Kart were skill is lost, or Wii Music or Animal Crossing, I want core games for the Wii, not a bunch of casual/shovel ware. I don't want a new Mario or Zelda yet, just games I can play for a while that isn't a party game or feel cheap.
Tellyn Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Screw that, I want core games on the Wii. Goron_3 Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Define core game. Well I think efforts like Metroid are great wii core games because they've not been dumbed down for the Wii's new audience.
ShadowV7 Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 My defintion is a game that is challenging and requires skill to do. Nothing that as Goron said, has been dumbed down to make it appeal more to the casual gamer.
Jonnas Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 My defintion is a game that is challenging and requires skill to do. Nothing that as Goron said, has been dumbed down to make it appeal more to the casual gamer. Like Fire Emblem?
Goron_3 Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Like Fire Emblem? yeah Fire Emblem rocks. Too bad no shops near me stocked it and they just reused the GC engine. Hmm FE actually has loads of untapped potential imo, spice it up a bit and it could be awesomely epic yet keep the same old formula. Does anyone know how it sold? I mean, I know it's not that popular and it's for a niche crowd but i was just wondering how it did..?
dwarf Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 But on the Wii there aren't enough shooters or epic games. You will never see a game such as Metal Gear or Fallout on the Wii because A) it physically isn't possible and B) nobody thinks it's worth making. Sure the first party games are great, but there must be more than that, and some of these 'core' games you are talking about really aren't deserved of the title. Yes, Boom blox may require some skill but it isn't a core game.
ShadowV7 Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Metal Gear appeared on the PS2, weakest console of last gen. Wii is weakest console this gen, but still capable of epic/shooter games. Just 3rd parties are faffing making shovelware most of the time. It is worth making, there's a load of games out there getting made that's epic to me, which comes down to tastes, which will make my bank account cry next year. 2009 will be the year I buy the most games. The Wii needs more core games so that core gamers will pick it up, which for instance, Monster Hunter 3 will do. Now that game is epic.
