Wow, I was right. The game looks much more smoother at 50hz. All I would like now is a closer camera view. ;)

You get a smoother picture with 50hz instead of progressive scan? That's theoretically not possible. Could you elaborate please? I'm going to receive the game tomorrow and I want the best picture.

Its odd, I know. But in progressive scan everything appears more jaggy, though there is no 'blurring' when, for example, the ball is moving at high speed (eg. goal kick). In 50hz, to me, the texture of the pitch and players are smoother, though I do notice a blurring motion when the game is moving fast; but I prefer this. Its hard to explain. Just try it when you get it. Use your Wii settings.

Finally got this today. Played the veteran's tutorial (intercepting with the D-pad WTF??) and then had a few games against the CPU. Early impressions are really good, but I do agree with those of you who feel the graphics have taken a step back. There's no two ways about it; somehow it looks worse than last years game. I'm playing on a regular SD TV with an RGB cable, and I can see shimmering and jaggies. Rather than the comparisons between ISS 64 and 98, I'm rather reminded of the leap from PES2 to 3. Suddenly the graphics were a bit shimmery and jaggies were more apparent (which mostly stemmed from the PES team dropping the Criterion RenderWare engine for PES3) but there was no doubt about it - the game was a mile ahead. My first feelings are this could well be the case here too.

The ball is much faster, and the players are satisfyingly more responsive and aware of the game. Free kicks are definitely improved, and I really like the little strength icon above the player when defending that gives you an idea of how strong the player will go in for a tackle. A lot of the improvements are not going to be noted if you're a newcomer, and I would recommend those new to PES Wii to seek out the older game on the cheap to start.

The only thing I'm a bit disappointed with (other than the graphics) is the easy difficulty level. OK, I'm playing 3 stars at the moment, but I'm getting some crazy score lines. Hope things get a bit more challenging on the next 2 levels up. It's early days yet though. I agree with King_V when he says that it's very difficult to offer a proper opinion of this after such a short while, since it's clear there's a great deal new here. Think I'll need a week at least before I'm sure of how I feel about it. :D

Would people generally agree with this??? as i never had 2008, but was looking at getting 2009 pretty soonish.

Should i get 08 first??

No, i think thats a ridiculous suggestion :) The game is amazing. If you like football games, and if the idea of having complete control of your play sounds great, then get this game!

If you're undecided then I can see the logic in getting the stupidly cheap older version

Hey go easy on me! I just thought for a complete newb it would be a shame to spend a lot of money only to find you don't like the thing! Just thought it was a good idea to try out the cheaper alternative (I mean, let's face it, we're never going to get demos on the Wii are we?) see how you feel and perhaps upgrade if you like it. If you've got the money to spare then hey, don't let me stand in your way!

For my part I'm absolutely loving the new game. I've upped the difficulty to four stars now and it's definitely improved the challenge.

That's alright KProject, we'll all take it out on you online when we put 5 past you!

I don't doubt it! I'm too cowardly to share my cack-handed skills with you all online.

The graphics here actually remind me of ISS2 for the GameCube. Anyone remember that one? I kinda liked it at the time, and was a bit surprised when ISS3 turned out so poor. They canned the series after that to focus on PES solely, and I always thought that was a shame. ISS was a fine series, and would have made a great, more arcadey companion to PES.

When you connect online, you are presented with the control method you wish you choose (Playmaker, Classic or Co-op Play) and then have a choice of playing a Champions League or Standard Match with a Friend, Rival or Random.. the only difference being the atmosphere really :heh:

The game keeps track of your previous games (I'm not sure how long the list will go for) and it will tell you who you played and what the score was. If there was a disconnection, it will say 'Defaulted Match' but it does not appear to punish anyone, unfortunately :hmm: ..having said that, I played darksnowman at the weekend and the game disconnected through no fault of our own so, in that sense, it would have been unfair to be punished!

There still appears to be more lag in the games than what would be desirable but if you get a good connection with someone you are in for some great games  ..that's if you get a game :heh: I haven't had time with PES 2009 in the last few days, but it seemed difficult to find a game earlier in the week..

When you play a Free Match, you will have the option for a rematch against that player and the ability to add them to your 'Rival' list, should they accept the invitation.. this means you will be able to challenge them to matches online should they be available when you are

Had an amazing game last night online. I was Chelsea and the other guy AC Milan.

He caught me on the counter attack TWICE in the first half with me having 60-65% of the posession and twice as many shots. 2-0 going into halftime

70th minute I finally manage to pull one back with a 20 yarder from Deco.

Constant pressure right up to the 90th minute with no luck of getting an equaliser. Clock comes up for 4 minutes of injury time.

In what must of been the 3rd minute of injury time I crossed the ball in, one of his defenders heads it back out straight to Deco on the edge of the box, who volleys it into the back of the net. 2-2. Full time whistle goes straight after he kicks off. I was absolutely delighted, other guy - not so much.

I've now played a Champs League with pointer and a Champs League with classic control. Met Man U in the final both times and killed them both times. Overall the game is more difficult to play in classic mode, I find, because I'm so reluctant to shoot as they barely ever hit the target. I'm trying to basically walk the ball in!

Need to get tucked into a Master League next. :hehe:

Got this for my anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, and after the initial wow, I've had more and more tiny disappointments. I'm hoping that you kind lot over here can clear some of them up, at the very least.

- How can you pass harder? For the moment, I'm losing my balls over and over (oh yes) because my entire squad passes like sissies on crack.

- How do you pull off a controlled shot? It's nowhere in the manual, but does appear in the tutorials.

- How do you feint, cancel and marseillaise with the wiimote and the nunchuk? If it's true that those are set to random (ie, hold z and shake), I'm gonna cry.

- Where are the extras?

No probs defending.

Also (no biggie for the lot of you I suppose), although the box says multilingual, only English, French and German text & commentary is provided (while I really appreciated the Spanish option on the ps2 versions of 4 and 6 - studying Spanish as I am).
